Discourses on Responsible Innovation and Responsible Research and Innovation, in short R(R)I, have revolved around but not elaborated on the notion of critique. In this article, generative critique is introduced to R(R)I as a practice that sits in-between adversarial armchair critique and co-opted, uncritical service. How to position oneself and be positioned on this spectrum has puzzled humanities scholars and social scientists who engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists, engineers, and other professionals. Recently, generative critique has been presented as a solution to the puzzle in interdisciplinary collaborations on neuroscientific experiments. Generative critique seeks to create connections across disciplines that help remake seemingly stable objects in moments when taken-for granted ways of seeing and approaching objects are unsettled. In order to translate generative critique from the neurosciences to R(R)I, socio-technical integration research (STIR) is proposed as a practice of generative critique in interdisciplinary R(R)I collaborations. These collaborations aim to account for societal aspects in research and technology development. For this purpose, a variety of approaches have been developed, including STIR and video-reflexive ethnography (VRE). STIR and VRE resemble each other but diverge on affective, collaborative, and temporal dimensions. Their juxtaposition serves to develop suggestions for how STIR could be modified on these dimensions to better enact generative critique in interdisciplinary R(R)I collaborations. In this way, the article contributes to ongoing discussions in R(R)I and in the engaged programme in science and technology studies more broadly on the dynamics of positioning in collaborative work.

Co-authorship networks can provide key insights into the production of scientific knowledge. This is particularly interesting in Antarctica, where most human activity relates to scientific research. Bibliometric studies of Antarctic science have provided a useful understanding of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, yet most research has focused on broad-scale analyses over recent time periods. Here, we take advantage of a 'Goldilocks' opportunity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an internationally important region of Antarctica and the largest ice-free region on the continent. The McMurdo Dry Valleys have attracted continuous and diverse scientific activity since 1958. It is a geographically confined region with limited access, making it possible to evaluate the influence of specific events and individuals. We trace the history of environmental science in this region using bibliometrics and social network analysis. Our results show a marked shift in focus from the geosciences to the biosciences, which mirrors wider trends in the history of science. Collaboration among individuals and academic disciplines increased through time, and the most productive scientists in the network are also the most interdisciplinary. Patterns of collaboration among disciplines resemble the biogeochemical relationships among respective landscape features, raising interesting questions about the role of the material environment in the development of scientific networks in the region, and the dynamic interaction with socio-cultural and political factors. Our focused, historical approach adds nuance to broad-scale bibliometric studies and could be applied to understanding the dynamics of scientific research in other regions of Antarctica and elsewhere.

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 204-223). ; This exploratory study applies a cultural studies and interdisciplinary approach to the discourses that emerge in the discursive gap at the interface of religion and public health, a gap most readily seen in the context of HIV/AIDS and in literature addressing sub-Saharan Africa. The combination of the different, often divergent discursive frameworks of religion and public health, and the idea of the linguistic construction of HIV/AIDS, prompts this theoretical response. The empirical data for developing these theoretical judgements are based on personal involvement in the African Religious Health Assets Programme (ARHAP), an international, multi-institutional research collaborative that is focused on the intersection between religion and public health.

This study of educational programs in schools of social work in the Nordic countries focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching, research, field practice, and community involvement. The study makes comparisons with similar studies in the United States, Israel, Canada, and Hungary. It takes those studies a step further by discussing whether the national welfare system influences interdisciplinary collaboration in the educational programs in the respective countries.

Building on a pioneer project in digitizing and Internet publishing of a clipping file donated by Juan Linz on the Spanish political transition, carried out by the Library of the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences of the Juan March Institute, a reflection on the role of innovation and interdisciplinary team building is done. It could be said that the traditional principles of conservation, cataloguing and readers' services within a stable environment may no longer be essential but we are seeing that these principles are applicable to new media as well. Therefore the information professional's ability to select, evaluate, organize and create easy access is just as essential before the avalanche of electronic information and his participation in the development of new projects that facilitate the use of and broaden the diffusion of electronic information are even more critical for successful projects and broader diffusion. Information professionals need to retool their attitudes and functions, to improve their formation and advance, beyond the traditional confines and redefine their function to be that of innovators. The information professional has in an excellent position to develop new products due to his deep understanding of their users varied needs for information and an awareness of potential advances generated by advancing technology. To further this knowledge and expertise it will be necessary in the future to create new ways of defining information, new tools and new methodologies to insure that the users' needs are met. ; A partir de la experiencia de digitalización y publicación en Internet del archivo hemerográfico de la transición política española de Juan J. Linz, realizada por la Biblioteca del Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Ciencias Sociales (CEACS) del Instituto Juan March, se reflexiona sobre la importancia de la innovación y la colaboración interdisciplinar para el futuro de la profesión bibliotecaria. Puede que los viejos principios por los que se regía (conservación, catalogación, etcétera, en un entorno estable) pierdan vigencia, pero poco a poco se va clarificando su situación, adaptada al nuevo medio, donde pueden aplicar sus habilidades de selección, evaluación y organización de los recursos ante la avalancha de información electrónica y gestionar el desarrollo de nuevos proyectos —o por lo menos participar en él—, por ejemplo digitales, que mejoren los servicios ofrecidos a los usuarios. Los profesionales de la información deben replantearse su actitud y sus funciones, intentar mejorar su formación y avanzar, desde su papel tradicional, hasta convertirse en innovadores. Se encuentran además en una posición excelente para elaborar nuevos productos, ya que suelen conocer en profundidad las necesidades de información de sus usuarios. Para aumentar este conocimiento será necesario que en el futuro se impliquen aún más en las líneas, herramientas y metodología utilizadas por los investigadores, en los métodos pedagógicos seguidos por los profesores, etcétera.

Based on an original ethnographic study of a translational cancer research institute in the United States, we propose calibration as a process that makes interdisciplinary collaboration without consensus possible. Calibration refers to ongoing, day-to-day negotiation and alignment of personal identities, disciplinary commitments, and research group customs that occur during face-to-face group deliberations around everyday research concerns. Calibration provides a mechanism that explains how collaboration without consensus is possible. Crucially, it does not presuppose that interdisciplinary collaboration either indicates or causes the blurring or softening of disciplinary boundaries. We argue that at the microsociological level it may be disciplinary robustness, rather than synthesis, that contributes to interdisciplinary innovation.

This article proposes a model for the interdisciplinary colloboration of judges, attorneys, and evaluators prior to the writting of a court order for child custody evaluation in the formulation of specific psycholegal questions that guide the examination. These questions accurately reflect the concerns of the court, the attorneys, and the parties to the dispute while framing the evaluation questions within the behavioral sciences, suitable for evaluation by a mental health professional. Such a model best suits the court by providing information on specific, legally relevant areas of parenting, child development, and/or mental health useful to the trier of fact.

Over the course of the past decades, local ecological knowledge (LEK) has become an increasingly present factor in policymaking and management in Norway and internationally. The effects of climate change are highly topical, which makes it important to explore the possibilities of LEK in all disciplines of the social sciences. ; The main research question of this thesis is: how can LEK be utilized as source material in historical research? This question has many facets and brings up reflections on interdisciplinary collaboration, history, politics and policy. These are explored through the cases of the Fávllis research network and the LEK material it gathered in the Porsanger Fjord in Northern Norway. Central in this is the points of contact between LEK and environmental history. The focus on is not on empirical analysis but on theory and methodology. In answering the research question, the thesis accounts for the historiography of the LEK term and environmental history, and looks at several questions of epistemology, methodology and practical use, as well as differences in portrayals of the Porsanger Fjord in various historical accounts.

The Roadmap for Mental Health and Wellbeing Research in Europe (ROAMER) identified child and adolescent mental illness as a priority area for research. CAPICE (Childhood and Adolescence Psychopathology: unravelling the complex etiology by a large Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Europe) is a European Union (EU) funded training network aimed at investigating the causes of individual differences in common childhood and adolescent psychopathology, especially depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. CAPICE brings together eight birth and childhood cohorts as well as other cohorts from the EArly Genetics and Life course Epidemiology (EAGLE) consortium, including twin cohorts, with unique longitudinal data on environmental exposures and mental health problems, and genetic data on participants. Here we describe the objectives, summarize the methodological approaches and initial results, and present the dissemination strategy of the CAPICE network. Besides identifying genetic and epigenetic variants associated with these phenotypes, analyses have been performed to shed light on the role of genetic factors and the interplay with the environment in influencing the persistence of symptoms across the lifespan. Data harmonization and building an advanced data catalogue are also part of the work plan. Findings will be disseminated to non-academic parties, in close collaboration with the Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Networks-Europe (GAMIAN-Europe).
