This review of research into prison therapeutic communities (TCs) covers democratic TCs, which treat personality disorders, and hierachical TCs, which treat drug abusers. The article outlines the history and establishment of TCs in Britain, USA, Canada and Europe and also describes typical TC treatment regimes and examines research into treatment outcome. It highlights the fact that outcome research rests mainly on reconviction and recidivism figures, despite criticisms of these as measures. Research shows that TCs can reduce offending and a relationship between length of time in therapy and positive outcome as been a consistent finding. However, TCs are established sparingly in prisons and historically have been relatively short-lived.
