Although different indicators capture different SEP dimensions, maternal education is often used as the only indicator in birth cohort research, especially in multi-cohort analyses. We apply this method to four studies, Piccolipiù and NINFEA from Italy and ELFE and EDEN from France, comparing the distribution of EHII with other SEP-related variables available in the cohorts, and estimating the association between EHII and child body mass index (BMI). We found that basic parental and household characteristics may be used, with a fairly good performance, to predict the household income. We observed a strong correlation between EHII and both the self-reported income, whenever available, and other individual socioeconomic-related variables, and an inverse association with child BMI. EHII could contribute to improving research on social inequalities in health, in particular in the context of European birth cohort collaborative studies.

Individual characteristics and socioeconomic position (SEP) are important determinants of health differences. We (1) examine the association of demography and SEP, with perceived health of the Russian population, and (2) quantify the magnitude of health inequalities ascribed to SEP in the Russian Federation. We apply a random effect Generalized Least Squares model on the datasets of the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS: 1994–2013). Our measure of health inequality is concentration index (CI), which we decompose into the determinants of health inequalities. Further, a balanced sample of 1,496 individuals extracted from the 1994 wave of RLMS is followed over 19-year period. The degree of aversion to inequalities in perceived health between the worseoff and the better-off is measured with achievement index. Being employed matters in perceiving a better health. Although the perceived health differences between the better-off and the worse-off are reduced, health inequality index indicates a change for better health for the better-off Russians.

BACKGROUND: India's economic development and urbanisation in recent decades has varied considerably between states. Attempts to assess how overweight (including obesity) varies by socioeconomic position at the national level may mask considerable sub-national heterogeneity. We examined the socioeconomic patterning of overweight among adults in India's most and least economically developed states between 1998 and 2016. METHODS: We used state representative data from the National Family Health Surveys from 1998 to 99, 2005-06 and 2015-16. We estimated the prevalence of overweight by socioeconomic position in men (15-54 years) and women (15-49 years) from India's most and least economically developed states using multilevel logistic regressions. RESULTS: We observed an increasing trend of overweight prevalence among low socioeconomic position women. Amongst high socioeconomic position women, overweight prevalence either increased to a smaller extent, remained the same or even declined between 1998 and 2016. This was particularly the case in urban areas of the most developed states, where in the main analysis, the prevalence of overweight increased from 19 to 33% among women from the lowest socioeconomic group between 1998 and 2016 compared to no change among women from the highest socioeconomic group. Between 2005 and 2016, the prevalence of overweight increased to similar extents among high and low socioeconomic status men, irrespective of residence. CONCLUSIONS: The converging prevalence of overweight by socioeconomic position in India's most developed states, particularly amongst urban women, implies that this subpopulation may be the first to exhibit a negative association between socioeconomic position and overweight in India. Programs aiming to reduce the increasing overweight trends may wish to focus on poorer women in India's most developed states, amongst whom the increasing trend in prevalence has been considerable.

Since the beginning of the democratic transformation process in Eastern Europe in the 1990s, governments, international organizations and civil society have increasingly been looking at the situation of the Roma in Europe. This population group, which migrated from Asia to Europe centuries ago and originally lived nomadically, now lives as a postmigrant group in various countries on the European continent and in other parts of the world. In the context of rapprochement with the European Union, various countries have analyzed the situation of the Roma and attempted to improve their often precarious living conditions. This article focuses on the socioeconomic situation of the Roma in Romania since the end of the Cold War. With the help of a bibliographic analysis, the situation of the Roma is discussed, with a special focus on education, employment, housing, and health care.

The study first examines the impact of prenatal care utilization on cesarean delivery rates. It then determines whether socioeconomic status affects the use of prenatal care and thereby influences the cesarean delivery decision. Using exclusive French delivery data over the 2008-2014 period, with multilevel logit models, and controlling for relevant patient and hospital characteristics, we show that women who do not participate in prenatal education have an increased probability of a cesarean delivery compared to those who do. The study further indicates that attendance at prenatal education varies according to socioeconomic status. Low socioeconomic women are more likely to have cesarean deliveries and less likely to participate in prenatal education. This result emphasizes the importance of focusing on pregnancy health education, particularly for low-income women, as a potential way to limit unnecessary cesarean deliveries. Future studies would ideally investigate the effect of promoting programs such as care participation on cesarean delivery rates.

The mean average difference previously recorded between blacks and whites on intelligence may be an artifact based upon the differences in education and socioeconomic position of blacks and whites in this country. Previous studies in this area, with a few exceptions, have been comparing
lower class blacks with second-third through tenth generation middle class whites. Only recently in this country has a true black middle class emerged that has had access to both education and income. Even though black income nationally is still only 61% of white income, the black middle
class income has approached 75% of white income. This increase in disposable income is being invested in youth development. Second generation black youth of middle class status will show many attributes of the American achievement syndrome. The black youth in this study exceeded the
white sample mean on the Stanford-Binet and the WISCR. The black mean was 128.63 with a standard deviation of 14.44, while the white mean was 115.75 with a standard deviation of 13.37. The difference was significant at the 0.001 level.

Technical mutations offer possibilities of interactions in new models or contracts of trust with the new conjuncture of crises of trust in mediations. With these changes, the question of the identity of journalism and the management of the journalist arises with the model of communication or the relationship with the public in the management of information. The meaning of information takes its meaning in the extent that communication and the current context of journalism destroys its function and its place in the public space. The debate comes into place on the postulates of the meaning of practices and presupposed evolutions of management in the institution of journalism inevitably linked to the new profile of the public who are familiar with the technical seals. Taking this context of position, employment, uses and practices into account, we have grasped the meaning of the new management of the contingencies of journalism with technological seals: the management reversed on media institutions. In the search for answers to the various questions of the study, it clearly appears that the social dynamic creates a direct link between the journalist and the public. At the level of the media with strong popular support and interaction on the platforms, the reason for the link may be the availability of the journalist or their obvious access, while at the level of the highly institutionalized media, the processes alienate the journalists and their public, erase them even in their representations. Beyond all this, there are characteristic features of mediation: humanization of the journalist-public relationship. And it recreates the perspective of the functions of language in the relation of information processes in social environments and the transformation of these information processes into communication processes in order to guarantee the human, less artificial nature of the environment of interactions. The identity crisis of the journalist, his post and his public constitute contingencies and crises of transformation that the management of media institutions and the approach to managing relations with the public must take into account. It is fundamentally the reading of the characteristic features of the new function of communication of the journalist that the spaces of arrangement of the relationship are located.

Background: Modifiable health-related behaviours tend to cluster among most vulnerable sectors of the population, particularly those at the bottom of the social hierarchy. This study aimed to identify the clusters of health-related behaviours in 27 European countries and to examine the socioeconomic inequalities in these clusters.

Methods: Data were from Eurobarometer 72.3–2009, a cross-sectional survey of 27 European countries. The analyses were conducted in 2016. The main sections of the survey included questions pertaining to sociodemographic factors, health-related behaviours, and use of services. In this study, those aged 18 years and older were included. We selected five health-related behaviours, namely smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, frequent fresh fruit consumption, physical activity and dental check-ups. Socioeconomic position was indicated by education, subjective social status and difficulty in paying bills. Latent class analysis was conducted to explore the clusters of these five behaviours. Multinomial logistic regression model was used to examine the relationships between the clusters and socioeconomic positions adjusting for age, gender, marital status and urbanisation.

Results: The eligible total population was 23,842. Latent class analysis identified three clusters; healthy, moderate and risky clusters in this European population. Individuals with the lowest socioeconomic position were more likely to have risky and moderate clusters than healthy cluster compared to those with the highest socioeconomic position.

Conclusions: There were clear socioeconomic gradients in clusters of health-related behaviours. The findings highlight the importance of adopting interventions that address multiple health risk behaviours and policies that tackle the social determinants of health-related behaviours.
