Share of renewable energy sources increased rapidly over last two decades primary as wind and solar power plants. Their increase was driven by governmental subsidies and priority access and dispatch regarding conventional units. Wind and solar power plants are inflexible sources because their generation depends on exterior, weather conditions and they cannot be controlled as conventional units. This paper will define term power system flexibility and provide an insight into flexibility of conventional and modern power systems. Detailed mathematical model of power system and all its components has been created and explained. Modeling has been executed as mixed integer linear program using Fico Xpress optimization suite. Using those models, flexibility analyses of power systems with different renewable energy sources share has been conducted.

More than 70% of the total worldwide electricity-generating wind turbines 117500 MW total) has been installed in Europe. Of these, 3500 MW were installed in 2000 alone, continuing an impressive pace of development over the last several years. At the same time, the European wind manufacturing Industry is booming with two-thirds of the world market short; These remarkable developments are attributed to ike effective support of the European Union and of the national European stales, following their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Wind power is now seen as a clean, cost-effective alternative to other forms of conventional electricity: production with clear benefits to the environment and to the economy, as a whole: In this review paper, the current state and prospects of wind power in Europe are described, with special emphasis on the three countries leading wind power development in Europe, i.e., Germany, Denmark, and Spain. The investment models applied in Europe play a decisive role in this development. Their differences and effects are shown and the role of renewable! in reducing CO2 (the primary GHG) emissions is highlighted. Brazil has to quickly expand its power generation capacities due to significant growth of demand. Government plans aim at adding hydropower capacities in Northern Brazil, additional to wind and thermal power generation capacities. However, new hydropower may affect environmentally and socially sensitive areas in the Amazon region negatively while thermal power generation produces greenhouse gas emissions. We therefore assess how future greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production in Brazil can be minimized by optimizing the daily dispatch of photovoltaic, wind, thermal, and hydropower plants. Using a simulation model, we additionally assess the risk of loss of load. Results indicate that at doubled demand, only 2% of total power production has to be provided by thermal power plants. Existing reservoirs of hydropower plants are sufficient to balance variations in renewable electricity supply at an optimal mix of around 37% of PV, 9% of wind, and 50% of hydropower generation. In a hydro-thermal only scenario, the risk of deficit increases tenfold, and thermal power production four-fold. A sensitivity analysis shows that the choice of meteorological data sets used for simulating renewable production affects the choice of locations for PV and wind power plants, but does not significantly change the mix of technologies.

The Indonesian archipelago has several suitable areas for building wind farms. In the site selection process, apart from wind intensity, there are other factors related to geographical and structural technicality that need to be considered. This research presents a hierarchical fuzzy data envelopment analysis model for identifying suitable locations for the construction of wind farms. The proposed hierarchy consists of two levels that are defined based on the 165 districts and 33 provinces in Indonesia based on data provided by different government organizations. Opinions from experts in different areas were collected and represented by the hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets, which were converted to optimistic and pessimistic preferences by using linguistic aggregation and, later, integrated to the data envelopment analysis model. Principal component analysis by IBM SPSS was used to verify the importance of the factors that can reduce ineffective indicators from the analysis. The results show that the South Sumatra province has the highest potential for construction of wind farms, especially in the district of Palembang. The West Papua, Papua, and Maluku provinces have descending priority based on good infrastructure accessibility, high wind velocity, and lesser susceptibility to natural disasters.

The integration of renewables into power systems is a key transformation for mitigating climate change and reducing fossil-fuel dependence. Among the different resources, wind participation has become crucial in recent decades—both onshore and offshore wind power plants. However, assuming the useful life of the wind turbines at approximately 20 years, different solutions should be discussed to overcome the turbine's aging problem. In the coming years, some countries within the wind sector will face the decision of partially or totally repowering or dismantling their turbines. This paper reviews different repowering strategies and contributions from a multifactorial perspective. A set of categories is defined by the authors and those multifactorial parameters are then classified according to such categories: technical, economic, environmental, social, and political. From each category, the most relevant factors to be considered for repowering decision-making purposes are identified and discussed. According to the specific literature, more than 90% of the reviewed contributions are focused on onshore wind power plant repowering actions. This percentage is in line with onshore and offshore wind generation units installed in recent decades. The reviewed studies show that Germany has a major number of contributions. Regarding offshore repowering strategies, all contributions propose a multifactorial analysis, in contrast to onshore repowering strategies where only 68% of the authors carry out a multifactorial analysis. The revised repowering methodologies and the categorization of factors can also be used by the repowering market, as a useful tool in the near future.

This paper describes categories of solar technologies and identijies those that are economic. It compares the private costs of power from solar, wind, nuclear, coal, oil, and gas generators. In the southern United States, the private costs of building and generating electricity from new solar and wind power plants are less than the private cost of electricity from a new nuclear power plant. Solar power is more valuable than nuclear power since all solar power is available during peak and mid‐peak periods. Half of the power from nuclear generators is off‐peak power and therefore is less valuable. Reliability is important in determining the value of wind and nuclear power. Damage from air pollution, when factored into the cost of power from fossil fuels, alters the cost comparison in favor of solar and wind power. Some policies are more effective at encouraging alternative energy technologies that pollute less and improve national security.

Wind power plants are becoming a generally accepted resource in the generation mix of many utilities. At the same time, the size and the power rating of individual wind turbines have increased considerably. Under these circumstances, the sector is increasingly demanding an accurate characterization of vertical wind speed profiles to estimate properly the incoming wind speed at the rotor swept area and, consequently, assess the potential for a wind power plant site. The present paper describes a shape-based clustering characterization and visualization of real vertical wind speed data. The proposed solution allows us to identify the most likely vertical wind speed patterns for a specific location based on real wind speed measurements. Moreover, this clustering approach also provides characterization and classification of such vertical wind profiles. This solution is highly suitable for a large amount of data collected by remote sensing equipment, where wind speed values at different heights within the rotor swept area are available for subsequent analysis. The methodology is based on z-normalization, shape-based distance metric solution and the Ward-hierarchical clustering method. Real vertical wind speed profile data corresponding to a Spanish wind power plant and collected by using a commercialWindcube equipment during several months are used to assess the proposed characterization and clustering process, involving more than 100000 wind speed data values. All analyses have been implemented using open-source R-software. From the results, at least four different vertical wind speed patterns are identified to characterize properly over 90% of the collected wind speed data along the day. This article aims to show that wind energy resource isn׳t efficiently used in Turkey and how the using of wind energy potential is improved is discussed. Some general information for about political structure and the lack of support mechanism of Turkey are given. For that purpose, a comparison between some developed countries and Turkey is included in this article. Turkey is a country which has wind energy potential on land and sea more than many European countries but the value of installed wind power plants is less than these countries. There is no power generation from offshore wind turbines in Turkey whereas it is surrounded on three sides by seas. The 2023 target which is about the renewable energy generation of Turkey is the 30%. Many developed countries identify long-term plans and implement the policies depend on these plans to exploit wind energy potential more efficiently. In this study, literature screening is adopted. According to findings obtained from the comparison between developed countries and Turkey, it is concluded that although Turkey has a higher potential then a lot of developed countries regarding wind energy, expected efficiency cannot be obtained due to the lack of a national renewable energy policy and the fact that wind energy is not promoted by incentives. Energy planning and management are necessary to promote wind energy which has a vital importance for the development and future of Turkey.

Public policies in the last 20 years have promoted in Italy the investment in renewable energy sources within the framework of climate change policies. Investment in renewables received generous incentives, leading to a rapid expansion in the capacity installed. Judicial inquiries have uncovered several episodes of involvement of Mafia families in the rich wind power business in Sicily. We test whether such involvement can be confirmed looking at the overall investment in the region. Using data on wind farm installations at the municipality level we show that the probability of observing a wind farm in a municipality is higher if in the local territory there is a mafia family, whereas wind speed is (surprisingly) not significant. Plants of small size, that require a simplified procedure managed by the local administration, are the predominant pattern of investment. Hence the episodes unveiled by courts are paralleled by a wider correlation of mafia family entrenchment in a territory and wind farm investment. We compare this result with the case of Apulia, the other Southern region where there has been a large investment in wind farms, supported by an environmental friendly regional government and apparently immune from criminal infiltrations. Applying the same econometric model in the case of Apulia we find that wind speed matters whereas the presence of the local criminal organizations does not affect the probability of observing a wind farm.
