Explores the methodological problem of interviews conducted in social science research in the presence of others, which is considered a violation of standard interviewing procedures, but in practice is not uncommon. Implications of this nonstandard practice for quality of data are discussed, noting that quality may improve or deteriorate depending on the relationship of respondent to the other party. To evaluate response effects, it is noted that various motivational factors influence the available spouse's choice to stay or leave the interview situation, eg, employment status & gender of parties involved (including the interviewer), & the duration of the interview. 2 Tables, 22 References. The spelling of a group of 11 partially sighted children, aged 6-10 years, was compared with that of a matched group of 22 fully sighted children, all tested during 1986-7. There was evidence that young partially sighted children were slower to make a start with spelling. No differences were found between the two groups in terms of the reproduction of silent or anomalous letters, nor in the inappropriate use of letter-sound correspondences. However, the spelling of the partially sighted children was significantly less accurate than that of the fully sighted children and this was thought to reflect their visual impairment.

This is the first practice research study to examine the feasibility of increasing the retention rate for a therapeutic community program for drug abusers. The effects of a short-term, cognitive- behavioral intervention were analyzed by use of a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design involving 22 new admissions. The Beck Depression Inventory and Problem-Solving Inventory were administered in pretest-posttest format, with the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire administered at posttreatment. Results revealed a retention rate of 100% for the treatment group, compared to 27% for the untreated group, at 60 days. The results are discussed in terms of their applications to social work practice.

This is a study on differences between national samples on authoritarianism, optimism-pessimism on the environment, and work values. 755 undergraduate students in social science from the U.S.A., Bulgaria, Hungary, and Norway responded to a survey. 29% were male, 70% female,
with a mean age of 22.83. Results yielded highly significant differences with respondents from former "socialist" societies scoring significantly higher on authoritarianism and environmental pessimism. Differences for work values are significant for 20 of 22 values for both self
and prospective employer. A remarkable finding is the consistency between national samples for the highest ranked 5 and the lowest ranked 5 values.

Most of the official obituaries which followed the death of Michael Oakeshott were so inadequate, paid so little attention to what really mattered to him, that one can only hope that something better can be achieved.1 If one believed the New York Times (20 December 1990) he was a "right-wing guru," a high-Tory oracle centrally concerned with interpreting (and usually decrying) current political events; if one did fractionally better and gave credence to the London Times he was, though a philosopher who "stood fastidiously aside" from politics, nonetheless the "articulator" of "the real philosophical foundations of Mrs. Thatcher's policies" (22 December 1991).

Competing theories of change in the nature & sources of racial differences in political alienation are examined, specifically: (1) political culture & socialization, (2) spirit of the time, & (3) political struggle & interest group theories. Racially based changes in political alienation on 3 different indexes are investigated using data from the National Election Studies, 1964-1984, involving 6 cross-sectional multistage probability samples of voting-age US citizens (total N = 9,568, approximately 14% black). Findings provide support for political structure & interest group theories, as changes in political alienation are race-differentiated & reflective of diverse & salient events. 1 Table, 2 Figures, 22 References.

(KS)

Sourcing research to date has concentrated on manufacturing,
primarily in the form of just‐in‐time purchasing systems. This study
examines sourcing in an important service industry – hospitals.
Hospital materials management integrates purchasing, inventory control
and distribution. A prime vendor relationship, an agreement between a
multi‐line distributor and a hospital, streamlines the purchasing
process by reducing the number of vendors and paperwork for the buyer.
An examination of 22 general hospitals in Georgia, USA, yielded
preliminary evidence the prime vendor relationship led to better
materials management performance. This article explores the potential
advantages and disadvantages for hospital buyers and vendors and the
implications for performance.

This article examines whether a significant part of Argentina's military budget over a 22-year span can be attributed to an arms race with Brazil. Multiple regression equations are estimated for the period 1961 and 1982 and several subperiods, taking into account Brazil's military spending, changes in political regimes in Argentina, and also the availability of economic resources allocated to the government. The results indicate that the rivalry existed until the mid-l970s. As a result of increased economic cooperation between the two countries since then, the arms race has gradually diminished, and other factors have become more important in determining defense spending levels in Argentina.
