Many global film industries fail in expanding the role of Muslims on screen. Too often they produce a dichotomy between "good" and "bad" Muslims, limiting the narrative domain to issues of national security, war, and terrorism. Naturally, much of the previous scholarship on Muslims in film focused on stereotypes and the politics of representation. This collection of essays, from an international panel of contributors, significantly expands the boundaries of discussion around Muslims in film, asking new questions of the archive and magnifying analyses of particular cultural productions. The volume includes the exploration of regional cinemas, detailed analysis of auteurs and individual films, comparison across global cinema, and new explorations that have not yet entered the conversation. The Gulf region has emerged as one of the largest hubs of international migration and more recently has also become a site of contestation for debates over the treatment of international labour migrants. This paper reviews the labour migration system in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, studies the unfolding human rights discourse on Gulf migration, and examines how Islamic principles might be applied to the labour reforms taking place in these countries. The paper suggests that there is a fragmented landscape around the human rights discourse of migrant workers globally. There are also tensions around the adoption of international human rights norms as a framework for addressing the vulnerabilities of Gulf migrants. In conclusion, the paper argues that the category of current Gulf labour migrant is best served if placed within the Islamic view of how an ethical economy ought to function. Islamic precepts on the 'humane' economy can serve to provide guidance on how to balance the interests of workers and employers, and elevate the standards for migrant workers' rights in this region.

The study of Muslim experiences in and with Europe during the interwar period is still in its initial phase. Addressing a gap, this volume brings together the insights of an interdisciplinary group of scholars who examine Muslim networks and actors in interwar Europe with a particular focus on the transnational dimensions of their activities. Drawing on official and personal archives and contemporary writings that have been largely ignored in the study of Europe, the contributors place Muslim activities within global political and intellectual history. They analyze significant socio-political ideals and religious affiliations, as well as the broader social, political, religious, and cultural mobility patterns of Muslims as new social actors in the Europe of that era. Together, the chapters reveal the importance of the geopolitical and intellectual East–West networks of the interwar period.

In the wake of the devastation of September 11, 2001, legendary Italian writer Oriana Fallaci published a mammoth article, then book, La rabbia e l'orgoglio [The Rage & the Pride], which attacked Islam as institutionalised barbarism intent on totalitarian domination of the entire planet. It's easy to dismiss Fallaci's furious outburst, but its implications need to be tackled forcefully & far-sightedly in the following respects: 1) considerable sections of public opinion in Europe share her extreme views; 2) several EU & other "western" governments, while disclaiming such views, in fact tacitly pursue immigration polices predicated on a civilisational chasm between the West & Islam; 3) there is a need for a discursive & societal space where western & Muslim version of universalism can coexist. Religion and politics have depended on and influenced one another since the origins of what we know as Latin America. Their relation is both mutual and multifaceted; mutual because religion and politics have evolved together over the years, taking material and symbolic support from one another, and multifaceted because it embraces interinstitutional conflict and accommodation (e.g., the "church-state" relations which dominated earlier scholarship) as well as more subtle and elusive exchanges whereby religious and political orders gave legitimacy and moral authority to one another. In this process, religious notions of hierarchy, authority, and obedience reflected and reinforced the pattern of existing social and political arrangements to such an extent that the two orders often seemed indistinguishable.
