Professor J.F.C. Harrison's recently-published book, Learning and Living, 1790–1960, underscores the sometimes neglected fact that strikes, agitation and political action are not the only ways to change a society, even though they are usually the most spectacular. For nearly two centuries multitudes of Englishmen put some of their faith in a number of less direct processes, all of which may be categorized as adult education. The men and women who devoted themselves to this work had different aims and used different methods, but all of them sought to educate grown men, particularly factory workers, and all of them believed their efforts would somehow make England a better place. This movement was not unique; in France, for example, something similar took place. Unfortunately, no one has studied the French movement as Professor Harrison has the English. Enough information on the history of worker education in France is available, however, to make possible a comparison of the movements in the two countries and thus help to confirm or bring into question some accepted propositions concerning differences in their political and religious attitudes and climates of opinion.
In: Social work in health care: the journal of health care social work ; a quarterly journal adopted by the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care, Band 34, Heft 1/2, S. 59-70
This article draws on a series of international research-focused webinars with social workers in 2022. They were designed to examine the rethinking of professional values during the pandemic in the context of other global crises, particularly the climate emergency. Participants readily shared ethical issues relating to self-care, digital working and reduced bureaucracy during the pandemic and implications for future practice. The need for holistic, community-based approaches integrating social, health and economic aspects of people's lives arose, and the importance of seeing humans as part of the natural world (eco-social approaches). Awareness of newer post-anthropocentric and posthuman philosophies was less evident.
"Social Networks at Work provides the latest thinking, from top-notch experts, on social networks as they apply to industrial and organizational psychology. Each chapter provides an in-depth review along with discussions of future research and managerial implications of the social network perspective. Altogether, the volume illustrates the importance of adding a social capital perspective to the traditional human capital focus of I/O psychology. The volume is organized into two groups of chapters: the first seven chapters focus on specific network concepts (such as centrality, affect, negative ties, multiplexity, cognition, and structural holes) applied across a variety of topics. The remaining eight chapters focus on common I/O topics (such as personality, creativity, turnover, careers, person-environment fit, employment, teams and leadership) and examine each from a network perspective, applying a variety of network concepts to the topic. This volume is suited for students and academics interested in applying a social-network perspective to their work, as well as for practicing managers. Each topic area provides a useful review and guide for future research, as well as implications for managerial action"--
; The article is devoted to the problem of leadership in the socio-historical development of society. The author studies theoretical and methodological principles of leadership based on the analysis of the different approaches and the theories of leadership. The historical stages of leadership development, change its essence through the prism of the centuries are shown and the most important concepts and theories of leadership are structured and generalized by the author. The evolution of leadership issues is presented in Antiquity, the Middle Age, the Renaissance, Modern and Contemporary epochs. The first attempts at theoretical comprehension of leadership from the «Heroic Tradition» were substantiated thanks to the views and works of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. The model of a leader-ruler as a spiritual person endowed with divine abilities through the analysis of the works of St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. The article presents the first original interpretation of the leader, which was proposed by political activist N. Machiavelli. The works of sociologists G. Le Bon and G. Tard about the dominance of the crowd, the ideas of Z. Freud, the history of the creation of "charismatic leadership" M. Weber were investigated. The article briefly demonstrates traditional theories of leadership : the theory of traits (personal theory of leadership); situational theory of leadership; behavioural approach to leadership issues; synthetic (systemic) leadership theory. The theory of transformational leadership by J. Burns and the model of emotional leadership by D. Goleman were studied. The author of the article make conclusion that leadership, as well as society, has undergone significant transformations, in each historical period had its own wording, is a complex, synthetic phenomenon, but at this time remains the most important guarantee of the success of human development. Therefore, its importance and problem remains relevant and it is necessary to continue research on the practical use of the concept of leadership in the future.

[Is there something distinct about the way in which social workers develop, analyse and apply certain knowledge to their day-to-day practice? One critical area of social work knowledge variously referred to as 'social problems', 'social welfare problems' or 'disadvantage' could be usefully subjected to more systematic analysis. Two approa ches to this task are discussed: the first built around the concept of social welfare problems; the second around disadvantage. The framework which uses the concept of disadvantage represents some refinement for this analytical task for social work practice by giving greater prominence to its central purposes, guiding values and basic action modes].
Martin Davies brings together contributors from a range of universities and practice backgrounds to provide incisive perspectives on this complex field. One half of a unique duet of texts, this book explores the issues within policy, law, theory and research, which will define practice for the next generation of adult social workers.

Abstract: Within social work education in the UK practice education has been subject to regular and substantive change and continues to have the potential to be fragmented as a result of practice learning taking place in a variety of organisations and settings as well as students having on site and off site practice educators. In this pilot research study individual semi structured interviews were used to gather data from 6 experienced practice educators who supervised students across both the statutory and voluntary sector, including those practicing independently as 'off site', to establish what influences practice educators when determining appropriate learning opportunities for social work students on their final placement. Findings indicated that practice educators draw on a variety of influences to determine appropriate learning opportunities for final year social work students, not relying on a single tool or mechanism. The research was undertaken in order to hear the voice of Practice educators and develop a better understanding of the process of supervising students on placement and to work towards enhancing future practice. Keywords: practice education; practice educator; social work education; placements; pcf; learning opportunities
