The inclination of various national governments to control the press is investigated, & related to press freedom & ethics, the professionalization of journalism, & concerns of the New World Information & Communication Order (NWICO). Data obtained during interviews with government information/press officials in 58 countries of Western/Eastern Europe, North/Latin America, Africa, Asia, & the Middle East are used to construct a "control inclination index" for each country based on main factors related to press control, including in-country/international licensing, a requirement for identification cards, accreditation, or a U education, & in-country/international codes of ethics.
