The author argues that the development of satisfactory market models in dentistry and other health care areas is crucial to a realistic examination of various deregulation proposals. He argues that such examinations cannot rely on the logic of economics alone, but must be rooted in empirical analyses well‐founded in theory. Using expanded function dental auxiliaries as an example, the author demonstrates the complexities of the issues involved and the relevance of political economy models.
The author argues that pursuit of the full employment objective retards economic progress in technologically advanced countries, It has been suggested that the rate of technological adoption should be retarded where it leads to increases in unemployment. The author argues that technological adoption should be encouraged because it frees people from employment, releasing them for work. A clear distinction is drawn between employment and work. The question of income distribution is briefly addressed.
This article examines the economic costs to the British nation of the Seven Years War. Drawing upon manuscript records and secondary studies, the author analyzes in detail the diversion of resources to the Navy and the effect of increased debts on the economy. Finding that the burden was great but the impact apparently slight, the author suggests that the English may have drawn substantially upon extra-national sources of capital, labor and materials.
Sweden is considered a nonaligned country. The author analyses the concepts of nonalignment and related theories to arrive at an exact definition of Swedish foreign policy. The second half of the article demonstrates how Sweden's current foreign policy is a logical outcome in the light of her history and geopolitical position vis-à-vis her regional and world environment. The author achieves this by following some of Rosenau's concepts of linkage theories.

This timely and eloquent book tells a new history of American art: how enslaved people mobilized portraiture for acts of defiance. Revisiting the origins of portrait painting in the United States, Jennifer Van Horn reveals how mythologies of whiteness and of nation building erased the aesthetic production of enslaved Americans of African descent and obscured the portrait's importance as a site of resistance. Moving from the wharves of colonial Rhode Island to antebellum Louisiana plantations to South Carolina townhouses during the Civil War, the book illuminates how enslaved people's relationships with portraits also shaped the trajectory of African American art post-emancipation. Van Horn asserts that Black creativity, subjecthood, viewership, and iconoclasm constituted instances of everyday rebellion against systemic oppression. Portraits of Resistance is not only a significant intervention in the fields of American art and history but also an important contribution to the reexamination of racial constructs on which American culture was built
American Catholic places the rise of the Unites States' political conservatism in the context of ferment within the Roman Catholic Church. How did Roman Catholics go from being perceived as un-American to becoming the most vocal defenders of the United States as the standard bearer in world history for political liberty and economic prosperity? D. G. Hart charts the development of the complex relationship between Roman Catholicism and American conservatism, and shows how these two seemingly antagonistic ideological groups became so intertwined in advancing a certain brand of domestic and international politics.Roman Catholics, contrary to the standard narrative, were some of the most assertive political conservatives directly after World War II, and their brand of politics was one of the most influential means by which Roman Catholicism came to terms with American secular society. They did so at precisely the same time that bishops determined the church needed to update its teaching about its place in the modern world. Catholics grappled with political conservatism long before supposed rightward turn at the time of the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.Hart follows the course of political conservatism from John F. Kennedy, the first and only Roman Catholic President of the United States, to George W. Bush, and describes the evolution of the Church and its influencet on American politics. By tracing the roots of Roman Catholic politicism in American culture, American Catholic argues that Roman Catholicism's adaptation to the modern world, whether in the United States or worldwide, was as remarkable as its achievment is uncertain. In the case of Roman Catholicism, the effects of the religion on American politics and political conservatism are indisputable

The main aim of this article (the paper is included in the context of a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology – code: SEJ-2006-15331-C02-02) is to further our understanding of two mountain rural areas occupying two distinct geographical environments: the Spanish Pyrenees and the Austrian Alps. I am particularly interested in examining the management practices that have been adopted as part of the public policies implemented in two mid-mountain regions - areas that do not have the same possibilities for development as those enjoyed by high-mountain environments. These places suffer structural problems resulting from low levels of agricultural competitiveness, accompanied by factors that impinge negatively on land use (which, in turn, condition their landscape management practices). Finally, I reflect on the differences between the two regions and their future possibilities.
