Doors are mediums of architecture as an elementary cultural technique, as they process the key differences of architecture from within and without. The door is a machine, through which the symbolic was materialized in architecture. This contribution describes, by means of examples from cultural, literary and art history, the monologic, epistemic and social aspects and paradoxes of the door as an analog and binary medium. With the obsolescence of the door knob, engendered by the invention of the automated revolving door, the analog door has bid farewell to society and is now mutating to a bio-political instrument which no longer addresses mankind as 'persona', but as a major perturberence.

Government strategy is to reduce by 40% the number of serious deaths and injuries from road accidents before 2010. Police accident STATS 19 for Scotland show that most deaths and serious road injuries occur in rural areas on B and A class roads which have the highest accident rate / kilometre. Most accidents occur on bends at night and most involve younger male drivers. An SOS omnibus survey was conducted in mid 2007 to ascertain: who drives on rural roads in Scotland, how frequently they drive rural roads; risky behaviour patterns; driving speed; age and gender differences in relation to driving speed. Peacekeeping operations throw the use of specialized military forces and the aim of accomplishing change in a civilian environment into contradiction. Organizations with cultures that facilitate warfighting have to reorient themselves towards achieving peace and consent rather than victory, making peacekeeping a process of constant intercultural encounters between 'military' and 'civilian' as well as between 'international' and 'local'. The force's local employees, civilians necessary in the force's military tasks, inhabited a particularly ambiguous position. Based on more than 30 oral history interviews with peacekeepers and local interpreters who worked in Bosnia-Herzegovina, this paper shows how four dimensions of cultural and bodily difference emerged from their narratives: uniforms, weapons, disruptiveness and training.

The transfer of editorial stewardship for a journal provides the occasion to rethink the journal's purposes and its place in the dense forest of texts claiming attention. If our view of these matters differed radically from those of our distinguished predecessors, it is very unlikely that we would have been called, much less chosen, to assume the journal's direction. Still, there are likely to be nuanced differences among editors. At a minimum, each set inevitably has its own way of expressing its view of the journal's purposes and place. This article describes where we seek to take the journal in the coming years, and why. Adapted from the source document.

Policy what government does, why it does it, and what difference it makes deserves a more central position in political science, especially in the study of American politics? This paper outlines the advantages of such a 'policy-focused' political science not just for the engagement of the discipline (and those within it) with pressing real-world problems, but also for the quality of research. My argument is not simply that a focus on policy will make political science more 'relevant,' although it will. It is that a political science without systematic attention to policy is a bad political science a political science that fails to capture extremely important aspects of politics. Consider the employee who is highly engaged and self-directed in her work, manages ambiguity well, genuinely engages in the journey of becoming an agent of change, seeks ways to understand herselfas a leader, and relishes the possibilities of ideas. On the other hand, there is the employee who looksto others for direction and answers, finds the lack of clarity and ambiguity unbearable, resists newideas, has difficulty making decisions, or jumps right into the decision-making process without carefulreflection. These disparate behaviors in employees seem to occur unrelated to age, gender, andsocioeconomic level. As teachers, managers, and consultants, we have engaged in our own leaderdevelopment practices and observed those of others in an attempt to explain these differences.
