The theatre of F.X. Kroetz
Along with Sperr, Fassbinder, H. Müller and others, the Bavarian playwright F. X. Kroetz represents in contemporary German drama a Brechtian realism with the proclaimed purpose of «laying bare social causalities.» Up to 1972 he dramatized frustrated, brutalized, and inarticulate peasant, petit bourgeois, and proletarian types, seeking rellease from unbearable conditions through acts of violence. Returning to Brecht's dramatic fables after 1972, he has shifted from «descriptive realism» to active political commitment and, after joining the German Communist Party, has come to adopt a definitely Marxist point of view. His latest plays (e. g., Mensch Meyer) emphasize class solidarity and class struggle, and suggest the as yet remote possibility of a new man in a new society.
