Ironically, as telecommunications technology--the embodiment of modernity--advances, bringing people in different nations into more direct contact during conflict situations, traditional cultural factors become increasingly important as differing ways of thinking and acting collide. The mass media can be seen as a factor in the creation of international conflict; they also, claim many scholars, are the key to control and resolution of those problems. Whichever side of the coin one chooses to look at--mass communication as cause or cure of conflict--there is no doubt that the news media are no longer peripheral players on the global scene; they are important participants whose organizational patterns of behavior, values, and motivations must be taken into account in understanding national and international conflict. In this volume, a distinguished group of authors explores the variety of ways the news media--newspapers, radio, and television--are involved in conflict situations. Conflicts between the United States and Iran, India and Pakistan, and the United States and China are examined, and national-level studies in Sri Lanka, Iran, Hong Kong, and the United States provide varied contexts in which the authors look at the complex interrelationships among government, news media, and the public in conflict situations.

Should deep seabed mining (DSM) stop or proceed? The international community is now facing a difficult choice. No matter what decision is made, environmental consideration is the core of the issue. This book tackles the compelling question of how to secure the marine environmental protection in DSM from an international law perspective. It deals with two major research questions: What are the international environmental requirements of participants - the contractor, the sponsoring State and the International Seabed Authority (ISA)? What are the legal consequences for them when environmental damage occurs? In doing so, it analyses the international DSM legal regime and general international environmental principles, observes the functioning of the ISA, and draws on law and practice of various environmental treaty mechanisms. The examination reveals the potential practical difficulties as well as fundamental obstacles in the application of international environmental rules and principles in the specific context of DSM

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has benefited from the skills of foreign qualified doctors for many years. International medical graduates (IMGs) – that is, those doctors with primary medical qualifications outside the European Economic Area (EEA) – have come to the UK despite the significant personal and financial costs, alongside the burden of taking the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) examination. Despite the costs and increasing indications that the UK job market was becoming saturated with the increased indigenous medical school output and expansion of the EEA, doctors still migrate to the UK in their thousands (McGinn, 2005). The government's active international recruitment policy, which continued until very recently despite the significant increase in places in UK medical schools, was partially responsible for this trend. Until last year, once registered to practise in the UK, access to specialty training was facilitated by the permit-free training visa (PFTV) system, which allowed IMGs to work and train simultaneously, without the need for a work permit. This meant that they could compete on an equal footing with UK graduates for training opportunities in the UK. The implementation and potential impact of some of the recent policy changes in the NHS specifically with regard to IMGs is discussed here briefly.
An important issue in the divisionalized firm are the relationsships between the three levels; topmanagement, divisional management and the operational level. In the international firm thephysical location of the divisional management level becomes especially problematic because ofthis level's strategic role concerning the links to the top management and the foreign subsidiariesrespectively. Most literature on international business leaves no doubt that the parent company, the "centre",designs the organization and controls the subsidiaries, the "periphery". However, the relevance ofthis perspective is dependent on the stage of the internationalization process. In later phases ofthis process the subsidiaries can extend their operations to markets outside their own and becomestrong enough to play a strategic role in the group's total operations within a certain product areaor function. Thus a situation can arise with a firm consisting of several centres located in differentgeographic areas, rather than one centre and a periphery. In the paper this is labeled multi-centrestructure.In a political perspective such centres are expected to have considering influence on the formalorganization structure including the location of the divisional management. In the paper the relation between the internationalization of divisional management and the existence of multi-centre structures in 22 Swedish firms is analysed.
