Abstract
This article documents widespread connections between stock companies and active or retired politicians in Germany during two distinct political regimes: constitutional monarchy and democracy. These differed largely regarding possible channels of influence, along with the power of the parliament. Despite the theoretical differences, the overall share of connected firms is approximately the same, implying that linking up with the Reichstag was already attractive in Imperial times. Moreover, the prevalence of political connections varied largely between sectors and political parties.

New developments in social psychology proliferated in Britain and the USA throughout the 1930s. With the advent of war, psychology promised insight into the Nazi mind. Some war departments were particularly enthusiastic about these intellectual developments. The USA's OSS can claim credit for bringing Frankfurt School neo-Freudianism onto the public stage. In Britain meanwhile, the Ministry of Information turned to behaviourism in order to better understand the British public. But the propagandists of the Political Warfare Executive (PWE), charged with the subversion of enemy morale, were wary of new perspectives. Psychology was valuable only so long as it was practical. For PWE, this meant that psychopathological orientations, which emphasized ahistorical German distinction, were for much of the war favoured over behaviourism or neo-Freudianism. This article examines the role that psychology played in British subversive propaganda directed at Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Did psychology offer any answers to the 'German problem'? And what made PWE distinct from contemporary propaganda organizations? PWE's particular engagement with psychology demonstrates the diverse and often culturally contingent ways in which psychology transitioned from the academy to the public sphere, and offers new insight into British wartime perspectives on Nazi Germany.

This essay presents a review article of David Christian's Maps of Time: An Introduction to Big History. Christian's book seeks to discover order since the Big Bang, the formation of the solar system and this planet Earth, the formation of life and its evolution through natural selection to humankind, and human social organization in family and tribe over one hundred thousand years ago, to the Neolithic revolution in agriculture over ten thousand years ago, to the formation of states about five thousand years ago, to the presentÑand onward to the future. This review essay also evaluates Christian's argument, mostly positively, in comparing and contrasting it to those of the few other fellow travelers through Big History.

This article provides an in-depth analysis and discussion of the global-historical theory of the so-called Rise of the West during the Early Modern Age and the commonly named Age of Discovery. This theory is covered from the point of view of history education in order to question and provide a criticial examination of the framework. On the one hand, the controversial state of research of the topic is outlined, focusing on the main theoretical debates and some of the most noteworthy ideas under discussion. On the other hand, a discussion is also provided regarding some of the special requirements and essential conditions for an implementation of the idea of the Rise of the West in the curriculum. These notions are linked to both the traditional and current narratives that can be found in the German and Spanish national contexts. From this point of view, the politics of history of both nations are outlined, and, in addition, in order to provide some exemplifications, a selection of history textbooks from previous decades have been also examined in order to analyze the way some of the narratives and these themes are presented. A series of categories, including historical myths, and the Rise of the West as a special category, as well as its institutional dimensions are also discussed in order to showcase the potential of the theory and some of the shortcomings that were detected from the perspective of history education. ; Este artículo proporciona un análisis en profundidad y una discusión sobre la teoría histórico-global del Auge de Occidente durante el inicio de la Edad Moderna y la tradicionalmente llamada Edad de los Descubrimientos. Esta teoría se aborda desde el punto de vista de la educación histórica con el fin de cuestionar y proveer un examen crítico de este marco. Por un lado, el controvertido estado de la cuestión de este tema se detalla, focalizándose en los principales debates teóricos y algunas de las ideas en discusión más destacadas. Por otro lado, se presenta una discusión sobre algunos de los requisitos especiales y las condiciones esenciales para la implementación de la idea del Auge de Occidente en el currículo. Estas nociones están vinculadas a las narrativas tradicionales y actuales que pueden encontrarse en los contextos nacionales alemán y español. Desde este punto de vista, las políticas de la Historia de los dos países son presentadas y, junto a ello, y con el objetivo de proveer de alguna ejemplificación, una selección de libros de texto de décadas anteriores ha sido examinada para analizar la forma en la que algunas de estas narrativas y temas se presentan. Una serie de categorías, incluídos los mitos históricos, el Auge de Occidente como una categoría especial, así como su dimensión institucional son también discutidas para presentar el potencial de la teoría y algunas de las limitaciones que fueron detectadas desde la perspectiva de la educación histórica.

"Die Europäische Union wächst, sowohl geographisch als auch in ihrem Einfluss auf das alltägliche Leben ihrer Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Gleichzeitig sind letztere immer weniger bereit, dem von Brüssel vorgegebenen Weg der europäischen Integration unhinterfragt zu folgen, wie die im vergangenen Jahr gescheiterten Referenda zur EU-Verfassung in den Niederlanden und in Frankreich eindrucksvoll demonstriert haben. Der häufig zitierte 'permissive consensus' (Lindberg/ Scheingold 1970), der eine weitgehend freundlich-desinteressierte europäische Öffentlichkeit beschreibt, ist aufgebrochen, während gleichzeitig das Volk über das Europäische Parlament sowie über Referenda die EU-Politik immer stärker beeinflussen kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund gewinnen die Einstellungen der Menschen zur Europäischen Union eine wachsende Bedeutung. Über Erwartungen, Hoffnungen oder Kritikpunkte, welche die Bürger mit der EU verbinden, ist allerdings jenseits allgemeiner Umfragen wie dem Eurobarometer wenig bekannt. Dies gilt vor allem hinsichtlich der neuen Mitgliedstaaten, deren Gesellschaften durch die jahrzehntelange Herrschaft kommunistischer Parteien sowie durch die rasanten Transformationsprozesse der letzten 16 Jahre nachhaltig geprägt wurden. In Ergänzung zu den vorwiegend quantitativen Studien über die öffentliche Meinung zur EU stellt dieses paper die wichtigsten Ergebnisse aus 46 qualitativen Interviews vor, die im Sommer 2005 mit Angehörigen verschiedener sozioökonomischer Schichten in Ostdeutschland und Polen zum Thema Europäische Union und Europa geführt wurden. Der Studie liegt die Annahme zugrunde, dass unterschiedliche öffentliche EU- und Europa-Diskurse auch zu unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmungen oder 'frames' (Goffman 1986) der Europäischen Union innerhalb der jeweiligen Bevölkerung führen, wodurch auch die erstaunlich stabilen nationalen Differenzen hinsichtlich der öffentlichen Unterstützung der EG und später der EU erklärt werden könnten. Die qualitativen Interviews bestätigen zum einen die Annahme, dass sich die unterschiedlichen historischen wie aktuellen Diskurse in Deutschland und in Polen in den Aussagen der Befragten widerspiegeln. Zum anderen geben sie auch Auskunft über die konkreten politischen Erwartungen, die der 'ganz normale Bürger' an die Europäische Union hat." (Autorenreferat)
