The article provides an introduction to Trans-sequential Analysis (TSA) – a sociological approach to the study of discourse work. TSA focuses on the procedural production of 'discourse objects' (formative objects) in legal, administrative and political sites as members' work. The methodological guidelines that set out how to conduct a trans-sequential analysis, that form the focus of the first half of the article, emerged from studies of the specific kinds of collaborative practices found at these sites. However, TSA is often positioned as a research approach applicable to worksites of all and any kind. In order to address the question of TSA's domain of applicability, I will take it outside the fields of law and politics. I will first outline the main ideas of TSA, and subsequently present empirical material from a NATO airstrike to discuss the value of TSA for military research. My analysis shows that ideas developed under the rubric of TSA can be used as methodological sensitising devices for studying collaboration in workplaces in which members do not organize their work trans-sequentially. By 1967, Brisbane architecture students had had enough. Disenchantment with their "out-dated" architectural education and the rigidity of the Australian architectural establishment opened out onto the wider context of the Moratorium opposing the Vietnam War, and the peculiarly conservative and reactionary Queensland Government of Johannes Bjelke-Petersen. In the demidecade between 1967, when the 6th National Architecture Student Conference was held in Brisbane to the infamous Art Experience Week of 1972, led by artists Tim Johnson and Albie Thoms, students and progressive teachers set up a series of dissenting events. These were symptomatic of the emergence of an Australian 'New Left', which was characterized by a concern with culture as well as with the staples of the 'Old Left' politics. Through theatrical performances (the "Architecture Revues", directed by William Yang), films ("Happiness is a Three-Legged Dog" is particularly noteworthy), art exhibitions and performance art events or 'happenings', Brisbane's architecture students questioned their architectural education and subverted the tenets of modernism while satirizing their socio-political environment and challenging the authority of their peers and ultimately the State. Based largely on oral history interviews, this paper describes how this generation of Brisbane architects began a critique of architecture's modernist orthodoxy as an intrinsic part of a wider reaction to global events and the politics of the State of Queensland. The "general public" and specific "communities" are increasingly being integrated into scientific decision-making. This shift emphasizes "scientific citizenship" and collaboration between interdisciplinary scientists, lay people, and multi-sector stakeholders (universities, healthcare, and government). The objective of this paper is to problematize these developments through a theoretically informed reading of empirical data that describes the consequences of bringing together actors in the Canadian HIV community-based research (CBR) movement. Drawing on Foucauldian "governmentality" the complex inner workings of the impetus to conduct collaborative research are explored. The analysis offered surfaces the ways in which a formalized approach to CBR, as promoted through state funding mechanisms, determines the structure and limits of engagement while simultaneously reinforcing the need for finer grained knowledge about marginalized communities. Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) operate at many levels ranging from the national to the municipal and have evolved over the years to respond to the geographical and political realities that are associated with tourism supply. Alongside providing information to potential visitors, DMOs work to make a destination attractive by showcasing its unique aspects and attractions. As the appeal of destinations, cost of doing business and the destination brand may be affected by the possible effects of climate change, this study aims to identify opportunities and threats to municipal and provincial/territorial DMOs and their members as well as identify measures they are undertaking to address the potential impacts. A study conducted of Canada's provincial and municipal large DMOs was conducted in 2009. This research found that awareness of climate change in Canada's tourism industry is increasing, but more efforts must be undertaken to mitigate climate change. To address climate change and tourism, this paper suggests doing three things: (a) DMOs need to demonstrate leadership about climate change education and mitigation to all their members; (b) government policy and action are needed to provide incentives for industry to address climate change; and (c) industry members require further education to take the steps necessary mitigate risk and to adapt. The internet has changed the DMOs' roles and how they provide information to the consumer; as such, they have been presented with an opportunity to take on new roles as educational and marketing providers. Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyse subject expression evaluation of the non-author language, i.e. the author whose thoughts, discoveries, research results or assumptions are relied on in scientific texts in Lithuanian and English languages, elucidate both universal properties of expression evaluation and the specific ones determined by a particular language and culture. Publication texts of education science field of social science area were selected for the research. Expression evaluation of a quoted author was analysed identifying neutral (surname / name and surname, nationality and residence, scientific and professional activity, time, scientific discoveries, activity achievements, family relations) and subjective (logic and emotional evaluation) attributes. It was determined that education science texts of both languages, Lithuanian and English, do not exhibit a variety of quoted author expression. No examples purveying all possible semantic meanings of attributes were found in both languages. Prevalence of neutral attributes of science subjects and similar aspects of usage of some attributes (surname / name and surname, nationality or residence) reveal general citation traditions determined by universal scientific text regularities rather than a particular language or culture. On the other hand, some tendencies were observed characteristic only to the texts of one or another language and reflecting specific evaluation features of science subject. In the articles of native English speakers, scientific discoveries, results of scientific activity of quoted authors are emphasised whereas Lithuanian authors are more liable to highlight scientific or professional activity and time. Moreover, it is essential to mention that every text represents its author's personality to some extent. Thus, the choice of the particular means of expression can be determined by personal qualities of an author.
