This book provides comprehensive insights into the concept of gender in an international context. By focusing on diverse and varied critical approaches, it explores how gender identities are shaped by socio-cultural factors, and provides a map of how gender experiences are understood and represented in the arts and society. Through an analysis of both focal and local experiences of gender within a global context, the contributions to this volume create a continuum in which gender and experience stand at a crossroads within the arts. Moreover, this crossroads intersects with the cultural determinations that some of the contributors explore in a critical way. Consequently, this volume represents a necessary contribution to the new maps of gender that are currently being set for the future. The book will appeal to academic scholars interested in the articulation of gender in traditional discourses, as well as the many deconstructions that have been undertaking in the recent past and the present. In addition, the volume is suitable for use in programmes and modules for undergraduate students of feminist and gender studies, cultural studies, sociology, literature, and popular culture, among other disciplines

The central argument of this book is that the sex//gender distinction is invalid and must be transcended. To this end, the work of Foucault, Connell, Goffman, Garfinkel, Butler, Freud, Derrida, Saussure, Lacquer and Kessler and McKenna is woven into a rich and compelling set of arguments. The sex//gender distinction is attacked for producing a series of irresolvable traps. However much one tries to think one's way out of the dichotomy, one ends up being suckered back into its imponderables and blind alleys. The book attempts to comprehensively reorientate the field and redefine the terrain.

Modern culture puts a person in difficult conditions: it requires his readiness for a constant change, to the assimilation of a very rapidly changing paradigm of the development of society and personality in it, but at the same time makes it be kept and respecting the meanings and values significant for many generations of the ethnic community. Chinese civilization is able to conduct a dialogue with other "cultural codes" and even exercise it according to its own rules, while maintaining its ethnocultural features, its identity. The identity of ethnocultural features is an integral part of the socialization process, including gender identity. The American writer of Chinese origin, Amy Tan his work, argues that through the acquisition of the "genetic homeland" within itself and designing a new gender identity, a woman in the conditions of a multicultural society gets the opportunity to find answers to the most important issues that explain the meaning of its existence.

The present article follows the introduction of the much-contested "anti-racist legislation" during a particularly dark era of governance in Greece. Within a context of deepening crisis, absolute legitimation of state racism and institutional violence against the nation's racial, gender, religious and sexual Others, the politico-legal choice of a right-wing government to go through with this reform appears paradoxical at first glance. Even more so, the introduction of gender identity among the protected characteristics seems at odds not only with governmental actions that have directly targeted trans individuals but also with the overall gender-normative imperative of the law and the hostile institutional atmosphere that mirrors and reproduces it. In view of this seemingly paradoxical legislative choice, queried here is the concrete work performed by the "anti-racist law" reform in the context in which it unfolded. Utilising a broader problematisation of any legal regime's authority to justify its own violence, it is suggested that a closer reading of the conditions under which the reform took place brings into light its instrumentalisation, during that era, to legitimise systemic racism and institutional gender/sexual violence materialised through operations against marginalised populations.

Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, Suzanne Romaine's main concern is to show how language and discourse play key roles in understanding and communicating gender and culture. In addition to linguistics--which provides the starting point and central focu
