Scholarly interest in and debate about urban political machines waxed considerably in the 1980s. What is curious about urban political machines is their appearance in the United States. Using the analytical framework of American exceptionalism, the author compares late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century urban political development in Germany, France, England, and the United States in an attempt to identify the distinctive features of the American context that fostered the rise of urban political machines.

SummaryIn 1984 and 1985, a survey was conducted of 7696 women aged 15–44 living in Italy, France, Great Britain, Spain and the Federal Republic of Germany. The aim of the study was to examine the use of contraceptive methods, the differences in contraceptive use, knowledge of fertility, communication about contraception, motives for choice and the perceptions held by women regarding contraceptive methods, particularly oral contraception. The results show important differences between the countries studied.

A minor purpose of this comment is to highlight Mann's use of the term `ruling class'; this allows a better appreciation of the differences between Tsarist Russia and Wilhelmine Germany. The major purpose of the comment is to argue that social evolutionism has something to be said in its favour. Mann is right to discount the radical potential of workers, but newer middle class elements may have greater salience.

Mass deportations of native populations (Jews included) from territories annexed by the USSR in 1939–40 in amicable division of spoils with Nazi Germany and its allies had everywhere the same historical background and followed roughly the same procedure. Territories in question included the states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in their entirety, parts of Finland, nearly one-half of pre-1939 Poland, and the formerly Romanian regions of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina.

Public reactions to recent nuclear accidents worldwide are assessed using data from polls conducted by 13 research organizations in the US, Canada, West Germany, Greece, England, & the Netherlands between 1975 & 1986. Responses from nationally representative samples of adults (total N = 14,379) reveal public awareness of such accidents & how their attitudes concerning the safety of nuclear power plants, use of nuclear energy, & willingness to have plants in their communities have been affected.
