"Ethology, or, how animals relate to their environments is currently enjoying increased academic attention. A prominent figure in this scholarship is Gilles Deleuze and yet, the significance of his relational metaphysics to ethology has still not been scrutinised. Jason Cullen's book is the first text to analyse Deleuze's philosophical ethology and he prioritises the theorist's examination of how beings relate to each other. For Cullen, Deleuze's Cinema books are integral to this investigation and he highlights how they expose a key Deleuzian theme: that beings are fundamentally continuous with each other. In light of this continuity then, Cullen reveals that how beings understand each other shapes them and allows them to transform their shared worlds."--

There is evidence everywhere that our criminal justice system is undergoing a crisis of practice. Increased police violence and the concomitant distrust of police in many communities, fear of aggressive enforcement tactics more generally, worries about widespread governmental surveillance and, above all, a concern with overcriminalization and mass incarceration-these are the dreary and familiar stuff of daily headlines. But, this crisis of practice in tum reflects a deeper crisis of how we theorize about criminal law. We lack, for the most part, any worked-out theory of what the policing and processing of crime should look like. Nor do we have real consensus on what things should be criminalized.1 And while we have theories of punishment in seeming abundance, they address a world that is, for the most part, divorced from our current reality.2 In particular, neither theories of deterrence nor retribution can explain, in any straightforward way, what is wrong with the warehousing of millions of people in prisons and jails across America.3 We live, as many have observed, in a "carceral state. "4 Our theories of criminal law and punishment, for from giving us grounds to criticize that practice, could in some ways be said to be propping it up.5 If we need to punish harshly because retribution demands it, or because deterrence requires it, then the carceral state is not an unfortunate reality. It may be a normative necessity.

Promoting another reading of 'L'aperto: l'uomo e l'animale' of Giorgio Agamben, the present article has the double intention to expose the anthropological machine that realizes the classical and modern anthropogenesis and to introduce aspects of indigenous philosophy (the philosophy produced and expressed by Brazilian Amerindians) which influence the relation between man and animal, as well between humankind and animality, in contrast. Taking the risk here of using the expression indigenous philosophy, aware of the hypothesis of being misunderstood, we want to defend the possibility of this use. Between the Brazilians Amerindians, we are going to visit together the writings of Gersem Baniwa, Daniel Munduruku e Davi Kopenawa, among others. If the contemporary is absolutely present at us and captivates our attention with lights and shadows, nothing can be more contemporary then the effort of enlarge our epistemological horizon.

Moral Powers, Fragile Beliefs suggests new ways of thinking about moral philosophy in its under-explored but potentially very fruitful encounter with philosophy of religion. The contributors undertake this project through a variety of novel approaches, via literature, psychoanalysis, history of philosophy, continental and feminist thought, as well as by means of analytic philosophy. Contemporary popular culture is riddled with references to Mexican drug cartels, narcos, and drug trafficking. In the United States, documentary filmmakers, journalists, academics, and politicians have taken note of the increasing threats to our security coming from a subculture that appears to feed on murder and brutality while being fed by a romanticism about power and capital. Carlos Alberto Sánchez uses Mexican narco-culture as a point of departure for thinking about the nature and limits of violence, culture, and personhood. A Sense of Brutality argues that violent cultural modalities, of which narco-culture is but one, call into question our understanding of "violence" as a concept. The reality of narco-violence suggests that "violence" itself is insufficient to capture it, that we need to redeploy and reconceptualize "brutality" as a concept that better captures this reality. Brutality is more than violence, other to cruelty, and distinct from horror and terror--all concepts that are normally used interchangeably with brutality, but which, as the analysis suggests, ought not to be. In narco-culture, the normalization of brutality into everyday life is a condition upon which the absolute erasure or derealization of people is made possible.
