Purpose
Social enterprises are defined in practice in terms of one operational model generating measurable value in more than one of the economic, social and natural/ecological value denomination categories. However, entrepreneurship theory does not generally or explicitly reflect this definition, which has generated confusion about the social enterprise concept. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to social enterprise theory by delineating novel aspects of this definition and their conceptual ramifications.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors review the social enterprise literature with a focus only on the most original contributions and most distinct research questions. The authors do not explicitly review research on traditional for-profit entrepreneurial ventures, not-for-profit/non-governmental organizations or mainstream social entrepreneurial ventures.
Findings
The authors offer several implications for social enterprise theory based on practices that are unique to the area but not amenable other areas of entrepreneurship. The contribution is instrumental to establishing social enterprise as a distinct theoretic area.
Originality/value
By focusing on novel aspects of social enterprise not easily explainable by mainstream theoretic traditions, the authors offer an original contribution to the development of social enterprise theory.

Author notes that currently there is no thorough study of complex topics charities in the studied region, but there are an article by M. Sribna and PhD theses of V. Udovika and О. Kostyuchka where the authors consider the context of the theme of societies assistance. This publication draws on the State Archive of the Kiev region, and memoir literature and eyewitness testimony of members of the activities of these organizations, including Chairman of the Red Cross Professor of Kiev F.Bohatyrchuk «My life way» and Chairman of the Red Cross Poltava G. It is claimed that the attitude of the German authorities in the territory of Poltava in the activities of charitable societies are more loyal than in Kyiv, where the focused power structure of the governing bodies, the local population was controlled tougher. On the territory of Kyiv and Kyiv oblast Society acted illegally, but their activity has provided assistance to prisoners, vulnerable populations , definitely persecuted for not obey the laws of the «new government». The territory of Poltava Society had official status, but failed to attract enough participants activists, as it was in the Kyiv region. At the initial stage of the war were Ukrainian Red Cross Society, which in autumn 1941 at the Kiev military operations helped prisoners of war and local residents provided first aid, organized heating and nutrition. The present article is devoted to social evolution both as a part of macroevolution and as a specific process that have led humanity to outstanding successes and heights (while creating in the meantime serious crises and major problems). The article examines important theoretical aspects of social evolution within the framework of a more general approach, which we call evolutionary studies. The authors give a definition of social evolution, examine its most important mechanisms, compare it with biological evolution, introduce the concept of social aromorphosis, and analyse the concept of unilinear and multilinear evolution. We show that only by considering the evolution as multilinear one can identify the major trends and patterns of social evolution and evolution in general. The authors view social evolution both as changes in a relatively local and not so long-term perspective and as a larger process that we call social macroevolution. In our understanding, social macroevolution is a special dimension of social evolution that encompasses a series of the most important and milestone transformations that have led to the emergence and development of the World System (and, accordingly, a theory that focuses on their analysis). The genesis of the World System and a number of its further changes are the key elements of the social macro-evolutionary process. Moreover, the emergence of the World System was not only the most important result of the entire previous course of social evolution, but also became, in a certain sense, the threshold beyond which it is absolutely necessary to distinguish social macroevolution as a special supra-social part of social evolution (i.e., the part that no longer relates to the level of only individual society). The main trends of macroevolution, such as the irreversibility of evolution, its particular direction, variability, are expressed both in the systemic features and in the transformations of the World System. The article was prepared as a part of the research work of the state task of the RANEPA.

J. Diggin (The Bard of Savagery: Thorstein Veblen and Modern Social Thought, New York: Seabury Press, 1978) has seen Veblen as one of the three great sociological theorists of industrial capitalism, along with Marx & Weber. Veblen's work appeals to three basic concerns: basic human instincts, theory of history, & investigation of contemporary institutions, especially business. The ideas of Hegel, as conveyed by G. S. Morris, were an important influence on Veblen's outlook, leading him to a four-stage scheme of history: savagery, barbarism, handicrafts, & industrial society. W. H. Stoddard.
