This study explores the prevalence in German culture of myths about ancient matriarchal societies, tracing their presence in left and right wing politics, feminist and antifeminist writing, sociology, psychoanalysis and literary production. The work of the Swiss theorist of matriarchy, Johann Jakob Bachofen (1815-1887), has been highly influential, and this book shows how the interpretation of his legacy became a battleground for conflicts about modernity, myth, race and nation, sex and gender, and ultimately the struggle between National Socialism and its opponents.

A mass protest by farmers camped outside New Delhi in 2020–21 persuaded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to repeal laws that aimed to further liberalize Indian agricultural markets. The protests reflected the depth of an ongoing agrarian crisis in the Indian countryside. The Green Revolution introduced in the 1960s and the economic liberalization of the 1990s deepened rural inequalities, creating fertile ground for right-wing populism. More recently, however, economic vulnerability has catalyzed a reassertion of farmer and rural identities over religious affiliations.

This journal has in recent years published the Spotlight series, consisting of articles which each attempt to provide an overview of the historiographical landscape in various European countries and major themes in European history. The articles have highlighted methodological developments, significant debates, and risks and challenges to historical scholarship from hostile political directions. To date, the series has included profiles of Ukrainian, Norwegian, Albanian, Hungarian, Italian, Serbian and French history, as well as insightful overviews of right-wing populism, migration history, and environmental and global history.

This essay began as a keynote I delivered at a sociology teaching conference in the summer of 2023. It focuses on my experiences of right-wing harassment and as both a scholar and teacher working in Florida under recent legislation that targets various foundational sociology concepts and challenges various inclusion practices on college campuses. I offer an assessment of these attacks on our academic freedoms and lay out three skills that sociology specifically can provide students as they navigate learning in environments like Florida.

This viewpoint exemplifies how advances in computational text analysis allow for analysing novel data for transitions studies. Applying the specific technique of topic modelling to plenary talks related to energy in the Finnish parliament during 2008–2020 illustrates how the approach can be of use to transitions studies. In particular, it aids in exploring the dynamics of diverging perspectives, such as by right-wing populists and the greens, on outlooks for energy transitions. Recent developments show that Poland's anti-gender campaigns, initiated around 2012 by the Polish Catholic Church and ultraconservative organisations, will continue into the next parliamentary term. While the right-wing populist Law and Justice party has made attacks on 'gender ideology' a key element of the critique of individualism and neoliberal globalisation, anti-gender rhetoric is also today being adopted by neo-fascists, who combine a desire to maintain a gender hierarchy and hatred towards 'sexual degenerates' with anti-European Union sentiments and Islamophobia.

Using a state-level panel data set on the incidence of hate crimes in India, this paper implements difference in difference (DID) and triple difference in difference (DDD) research designs to estimate the causal impact of the right-wing BJP's win in the 2014 parliamentary elections on hate crimes against religious minorities (Muslims, Christians and Sikhs). Comparing the periods 2009-13 (pre-election) and 2014-18 (post-election), I find that BJP's electoral victory caused an increase in the incidence of hate crimes against religious minorities in India.

This essay examines contemporary populist movements along an axis rarely explored in world-systems analysis: as either libertarian or authoritarian social movements. Rather than representing a fundamental break with traditional notions of left and right-wing politics, this article argues that these populist movements are a re-imagining of older political debates, which framed the conflict between the Enlightenment and its opponents—in short, between the search for a universal and just social order—as opposed to a defense of forms of cultural nationalism.

Right-wing populist approaches to employment and social policy have become increasingly prevalent in recent years; such ideas stigmatise 'others' such as immigrants and the unemployed, while advocating the transfer of resources to favoured groups. In this article, based on a study of Poland and the United Kingdom, we contend that such developments are indicative of illiberal forms of dualisation and assess the relationship of trade unions with these processes. In conclusion, we discuss ways in which future investigations might develop more understanding of this concept.
