(DÜI-Wsl)

"This edited collection uses a history of economic thought perspective to explore the evolving role of Latin America within the context of globalization. In particular, it examines the region's resilience in the face of the global financial crisis.Economic Development and Global Crisis explains that Latin America is a region with distinct characteristics and peculiarities which have been shaped from the colonial era up to the present day. The contributions suggest that several features which were perceived as economic backwardness have turned out to be advantageous, and this may explain why Latin America is withstanding the crisis much better than Europe, Japan and the USA. This book will be of interest to scholars working in the areas of economic development, economic history, the history of economic thought and Latin American studies"--
2019 Spring. ; Includes bibliographical references. ; This dissertation explores the relationship between financial markets and economic activity across regions within the United States. In particular, it examines how regional variation in financial markets may affect variables that play an important role in regional economic growth and income distribution. Despite the way the Great Recession of 2007-2009 made manifest the importance of financial markets in the determination of real economic outcomes, there is still much that is not understood about the relationship between financial markets and the rest of the economy. Financial markets may affect household decision making either indirectly via their influence over institutional arrangements and social norms, or directly via their influence over who can obtain access to the credit needed to start a business, purchase a home, or invest in human capital. These changes will alter the distribution of income—both directly via the re-distribution of funds through credit markets, and indirectly via the outcomes that access to credit (or lack there-of) engender.

Since the last century, the obsession of Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese reformists has been to make up the lost ground with modernized countries. This paper compares the experiences of Spain and Portugal in the European Union (EU) and of Mexico in NAFTA to study how integration has affected their economic structures and economic performance. It examines the relationship between regional integration, economic growth, and democratic consolidation in these three countries, and draws some lessons based on their regional integration experiences.

This paper studies the trends and pattern in the share of the planned outlay in physical infrastructure on North Eastern States in total outlay of India. The sectors which are focused here are Irrigation & Flood Control, Energy and Transport & Communication. The Paper also analyses the association between the plan outlay on selected sectors and resultant change in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and Human Development Index (HDI) over the period of XI and XII Five Year Plans. The paper concludes that increased plan outlay on physical infrastructure has resulted in increased Gross State Domestic Product in North Eastern States but it may take longer time and more attention towards development of Social infrastructure before it is translated into improved Human Development Index (HDI).
