The notion of citizenship has gradually evolved from being simply a legal status or practice to a deep sentiment. Belonging, or feeling at home, has become a requirement. This groundbreaking book analyzes how 'feeling rules' are developed and applied to migrants, who are increasingly expected to express feelings of attachment, belonging, connectedness and loyalty to their new country. More than this, however, it demonstrates how this culturalization of citizenship is a global trend with local variations, which develop in relation to each other. The authors pay particular attention to the intersection between sexuality, race and ethnicity, spurred on by their awareness of the dialectical construction of homosexuality, held up as representative of liberal Western values by both those in the West and by African leaders, who use such claims as proof that homosexuality is un-African.

En un período reciente, Brasil ha atravesado una profunda crisis política, cuyo momento más emblemático fue la destitución de la presidenta Dilma Rousseff en 2016. Dos años después, Jair Bolsonaro fue elegido Presidente de la República, con una plataforma política basada en la lucha contra la violencia y la corrupción, y en una agenda moral que incluye combatir la "ideología de género" y el "marxismo cultural". En este contexto, las ciencias sociales se ven fuertemente atacadas en la esfera pública, con la difusión de la idea de que los profesores están "adoctrinando ideológicamente" a los estudiantes en las clases. En este artículo analizo los desafíos para enseñar ciencias sociales en Brasil hoy en este escenario político. Metodológicamente el artículo se centra en el análisis documental y bibliográfico. Realicé una revisión bibliográfica con las publicaciones más recientes sobre la situación política actual en Brasil, así como también examiné las declaraciones del presidente de la república y los dos ministros de educación que había en su gobierno sobre ciencias sociales. Observarse que hay un escenario de inflexión política, marcado por un ataque a las ciencias sociales en la esfera pública, con un enfoque en las asignaturas escolares. A pesar de que los datos apuntan a un escenario desafiante para los profesores de ciencias sociales, sostengo que es precisamente en estos contextos que estas ciencias son más necesarias, considerando su papel en la formación para la ciudadanía y el compromiso con un proyecto democrático para la sociedad. ; In a recent period Brazil has been going through a deep political crisis, the most emblematic moment of which was the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016. Two years later, Jair Bolsonaro was elected President of the Republic, with a political platform based on combating violence and corruption, and on a moral agenda that includes combating "gender ideology" and "cultural Marxism". In this context, the social sciences come to be strongly attacked in the public sphere, by spreading the idea that teachers are "ideologically indoctrinating" students in the classroom. In this article I analyze the challenges for teaching social sciences in Brazil today in this political scenario. Methodologically the article focuses on documentary and bibliographic analysis. I carried out a bibliographic review with the most recent publications on the current political situation in Brazil, as well as examined statements by the president of the republic and the two ministers of education that there was in his government on the social sciences. There was a scenario of political inflection, marked by an attack on the social sciences in the public sphere, with a focus on school subjects. Despite the data pointing to a challenging scenario for social science teachers, I argue that it is precisely in these contexts that these sciences are most necessary, considering their role in the formation for the citizenship and the commitment to a democratic project for society. ; peerReviewed

Karl Marx's dictum that "If there were no diff between essence & appearance there would be no need for sci" is explained. Gulfs between essence & appearance in feudal & bourgeois society are exposed, & it is shown that, for Marx, there can be no such gulf in, & so no sci of, socialist society. This bears on the doctrine of the unity of theory & practice, which is discussed. Finally, Marx's idea of sci is criticized, but his desire for a society whose intelligibility does not depend on it is endorsed. AA.

This article presents a review of the social science literature on the veterinary profession. It highlights the current debates on the profession. The texts discussed in this review mainly relate to the fields of history, sociology, political sciences and social geography, although multidisciplinary or management studies publications are sometimes referred to. This article analyses four major structuring dynamics: the sociodemographic evolutions that are currently taking place within the profession (1); the transformation of practices and knowledge in relation, on the one hand, to the increase in the number of pets (2) and, on the other hand, to the evolution of farming systems (3); and the ways public authorities govern veterinary public health (4).

The 2018 elections in Brazil were marked by major changes in the country's political and social scenario. The present work focuses on the study of the campaigns of Fernando Haddad (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) on Instagram during the second round. Thus, through Content Analysis (Bardin, 2011) and theoretical discussion regarding political polarization and electoral communication, the work proposes to understand how the campaigns of both candidates took place and which strategies were recurrent in a scenario of political crisis and reorganization, not only in a communicational field, but also in a political field.

This article justifies the inclusion of social context in innovative undergraduate applied science programs. It proposes a model social context program, distinguishing it from two inferior strategies that expose students to a range of social disciplines at too elementary a level or rely on unsystematic, anecdotal work experience of science faculty confronting regulatory events. The article describes stresses associated with implementing the model program. Finally, it discusses the relationship of the model program to trends in higher education. A social context curriculum should explore the tensions between knowledge & power, & give students practice in institutional design. It should encourage both engagement & skepticism. Graded ease studies, simulations, senior projects, & experiential elements should be used to introduce a typology of institutional designs & progressively develop students' individual design repertoires. Implementation stresses come from debates over content, interdisciplinarity, university & departmental governance, & the reform of higher education, generally. 42 References. We develop and study a two-period model of political competition with office- and policy-motivated candidates, in which (i) changes of policies impose costs on all individuals and (ii) such costs increase with the magnitude of the policy change. We show that there is an optimal positive level of costs of change that minimizes policy polarization and maximizes welfare. One interpretation of this finding is that societies with intermediate levels of conservatism achieve the highest welfare and the lowest polarization levels. We apply our model to the design of optimal re-election hurdles. In particular, we show that raising the vote-share needed for re-election above 50% weakly reduces policy polarization and tends to increase welfare. Furthermore, we identify circumstances where the optimal re-electionhurdle is strictly larger than 50%.
