AbstractDemocrats and Republicans clearly dislike one another. Yet, scholars debate whether policy disagreement or partisan identity, per se, drives interparty animus. Past studies suggest the relationship between partisanship and interpersonal affect is spurious, driven by inferred policy preferences. We argue, instead, that policy preferences signal partisan identity when the parties' stances on an issue are well‐known. Using a nationally representative survey and four preregistered experiments, we disentangle the effects of policy disagreement and partisan identity on interpersonal affect. Our findings suggest that partisan identity is the principal mechanism of affective polarization, and that policy preferences factor into affective polarization largely by signaling partisan identity. However, our results also affirm that policy disagreement in itself drives interpersonal affect. This provides evidence that partisanship reflects an emotional attachment to a political party, not merely a running tally of rational considerations.

In August 2011, ethnographers Carolina Alonso Bejarano and Daniel M. Goldstein began a research project on undocumented immigration in the United States by volunteering at a center for migrant workers in New Jersey. Two years later, Lucia López Juárez and Mirian A. Mijangos García—two local immigrant workers from Latin America—joined Alonso Bejarano and Goldstein as research assistants and quickly became equal partners for whom ethnographic practice was inseparable from activism. In Decolonizing Ethnography the four coauthors offer a methodological and theoretical reassessment of social science research, showing how it can function as a vehicle for activism and as a tool for marginalized people to theorize their lives. Tacking between personal narratives, ethnographic field notes, an original bilingual play about workers' rights, and examinations of anthropology as a discipline, the coauthors show how the participation of Mijangos García and López Juárez transformed the project's activist and academic dimensions. In so doing, they offer a guide for those wishing to expand the potential of ethnography to serve as a means for social transformation and decolonization.

This volume addresses concerns about the impact of current systems for the management of research ethics in the social sciences. Many procedures in place are seen as inappropriate as they were originally designed for use in biomedical research. The content identifies areas of `common ground', core ethics principles and areas of particular concern.Over the past decade there has been growing national and international concern about the impact of systems for the management of research ethics in the social sciences. In particular these `procedural bureaucracies' are seen as inappropriate to the ethical governance of social scientific research as they were designed around the challenges presented by biomedical research.This volume addresses and debates these concerns and identifies areas of `common ground', core ethics principles and areas of particular concern in research ethics across the social sciences. This volume draws on proceedings and papers delivered at a Symposia series under the auspices of the UK Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS). Laboratorio de Ondas Milimétricas y Terahercios ; In this paper, a deep numerical as well as experimental study of the anisotropy response of extraordinary transmission metamaterials constructed by stacking subwavelength hole arrays is presented. Two-dimensional (2D) dispersion diagrams for S- and P-polarization were obtained from simulation. From them, it was found that negative refraction can be obtained for the latter case for small angles of incidence. Additionally, it was found that double periodic and dielectric loaded hole arrays are optimal to enlarge the numerical aperture that leads to negative refraction. Several experiments are then presented in the V-band of the millimetre-wave range that show excellent agreement with the numerical calculations. Moreover, the richness of the anisotropic characteristic exhibited by the stacked hole array structure allows for designing structures with complex electromagnetic response other than solely negative refraction. Thus, the results presented here could be taken as a novel route to achieve exotic behaviour, such as negative refraction at other frequency ranges, like terahertz or the visible. ; This work was supported by the Spanish Government under the contract Consolider "Engineering Metamaterials" CSD2008-00066.

Designing the phenomenon of security at the level of individual states and the international community, and the explanation of its nature, dates from the beginning of the history of humankind. In the early stages of the development of organized social communities, security (as an objective structural element of individuals states, and the international community) was primarily seen in the context of two concentrated forms: the war and the relations among states. Given the numerous new conditions in the international system, research would at present, within the framework of security studies, have to focus on comparative empirical studies of security at the leve of states and the entire international system. In the former Yugoslavia, the research into security and defence was at first conducted within military research institutions. In mid-seventies, the establishment of the diploma course in civil defence marked the beginning of investigating these issues at universities. In Slovenia this course is organized within the Faculty for Social Sciences. At first, it mostly involved teaching the institutional approach to the issues of defence and security, in time, research began, particularly after the establishment of the Institute for Defence Research conduct research in the fields of security, defence, army, protection, and peace studies. The death of Alberto Nisman, the chief investigator of the 1994 AMIA bombing in Argentina, unleashed conspiracy theories and significant political turmoil upon President Cristina Fernández. We study the case and trace two of these theories, asking what they tell us about the Argentine political system and what can be inferred with respect to other countries in Latin America. We confirm that nations with high levels of political polarization are fertile ground for the emergence of conspiracy theories and that domestic and international media play an important role in both giving credence to and spreading such theories.
