AbstractSocial scientists have begun to uncover links between sleep and political attitudes and behaviors. This registered report considers how diurnal morning-night associations relate to political ideology using data from the Attitudes, Identities, and Individual Differences Study, a large-scale online data collection effort. Measures encompass perceived cultural attitudes and social pressures regarding diurnal preferences and explicit and implicit measures of both morning-night attitudes and morning-night self-concepts. Together, the analyses demonstrate a relationship between morning orientation and conservatism for explicit morning-night self-concepts and, to a lesser extent, explicit morning-night attitudes. This relationship is not present for implicit associations, and associations with perceived cultural attitudes and social pressure are also largely absent. This study reinforces the notion that morningness and eveningness as explicit identities are associated with political ideology.

This article analyzes the development practices & foreign relations of Kwame Nkrumah during his nine-year regime as Ghana's first postindependence leader. It reinterprets Nkrumah's policies by situating them historically with the emergence of postwar global development discourses & geopolitically on the Third World battlefield of the Cold War. Nkrumah utilized his position at the crossroads of multiple modernities to implement a pan-African ideology. Nkrumah's ideology & policy led to a more globalized politics that emphasized supranational goals over national interest. However, these same shifts that marked his influence on the social imaginary were also limited by the political possibilities of his time. This new exploration of the contradictions of Nkrumah's rule has important implications for new global movements & organizations seeking to go beyond the nation-state framework. This research investigates the frequent creation of voting coalitions between the Socialist (PSE) & largely Christian Democratic (PPE) party groups within the European Parliament. The tendency of the PPE & PSE to form a 'grand coalition' is frequently understood to imply that there is no significant role for ideology in the EP. Two common explanations of the creation of the 'grand coalition' are tested demonstrating their inability to adequately explain actual coalition trends. I then offer some simple spatial models as a means of predicting when we should expect to see the grand coalition form. I then analyze 200 votes to test for the existence of each of the theoretical models & discuss the present & future role of ideology within the EP. 2 Tables, 19 References. A critical analysis of Julius Nyerere's "African socialist" ideology (eg, see Freedom and Unity, Dar es Salaam: Oxford U Press, 1967). It is suggested -- based on an analysis of the practice of African socialism in Tanzania -- that the basis of this ideology rests on the romantic notion that the reactivation of the precolonial culture system can usher in a conflictless transition to socialism. While Nyerere offers a powerful critique of the evils of capitalist industrialization, his emphasis on "agriculturalism" to arrive at socialism activates the peasant mode of production that erodes socialism itself. Moreover, bureaucratic authoritarianism & continued dependence on capitalist sources of finance & technology have undermined the building of socialism & consolidated the power of the bourgeois faction of the state bureaucracy. However, far from representing an agent of conservative & antisocialist forces, Nyerere & his ideology have contributed to the growth of progressive & radical forces. In this perspective, African socialism in Tanzania has unleashed a struggle between contending bureaucratic factions over different historical alternatives. The Nahda (lit. 'the Awakening') was one of the most significant cultural movements in modern Arab history. By focusing on the neglected role of women in the intellectual Islamic renaissance of the late Ottoman Period, Fruma Zachs and Sharon Halevi provide a refreshingly interdisciplinary exploration of gender and culture in the Arab World. Focusing mainly on 'Greater Syria', this book re-examines the cultural by-products of the Nahda - such as scientific debates, journal articles, essays, short stories and novels - and provides a new framework for rethinking the dynamics of cultural and social change in what today we know as Syria and Lebanon. The lasting impact of the Nahda is given an innovative and thoroughly unique interpretation, providing an indispensable perspective to studying the nuanced roles of the construction and development of gender ideologies in the nineteenth century Middle East.
