The second volume of the Young Sustainability Law research network focuses on key aspects of the sustainability concept and its practical legal implementation. Critical perspectives on existing sustainability concepts in law are presented and discussed. It explores the extent to which the imprecise sustainability claim can be given concrete contours in material law and enforcement power at the application level, so that law can act as a driver of transformation towards a sustainable society.
Thoughts and steps on implementing one of Daud Khan's five-year plan projects, named the Qush Tepa canal, began during the final years of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. These plans then provoked concerns among the stakeholders of the Amu Darya with the Taliban takeover in August 2021 and the acceleration of canal construction. There was a pressing need to study the canal for its opportunities and challenges. This research, adopting a mixedmethod approach, examined how the canal impacts the livelihoods of locals and agricultural productivity under a changing climate. The findings indicate that the canal is vital for Afghanistan, primarily to maintain food security for a growing population projected to reach 100 million by the end of the century. The canal is estimated to contribute around 400 million USD annually to Afghanistan's GDP. Additionally, if utilized correctly, the canal generates significant opportunities, enhancing food security and availability for Afghanistan and the region. Climate change has reduced cultivation areas since 2001, with reduced water flow, increased water usage, and decreased rainfall. The research concludes by acknowledging the annual reduction of around 6.5 billion m3 of water to downstream countries due to the new canal while highlighting the significant opportunity for mutual economic benefits for Afghanistan and Central Asian countries resulting from the canal's emergence.
The architect Andrea Palladio was a draughtsman and a designer, a mason and an engineer, an innovator and an image maker. His growing importance from the 16th century onwards was based on his profound expertise in architectural issues that went beyond singular tasks and situations, and beyond his particular moment in history. His way of thinking and solving architectural problems proved invaluable for centuries to come. The contributions to this volume reflect on Palladio's method(s) beyond historism and style, and thus provide insights into design and building in our time.
In this book, Michael Kimmage, a historian and former State Department official who focused on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, offers a wide-angle, historically informed account of the origins of the current Russia-Ukraine war. Tracing the development of Ukraine and Russia's fractious relationship back to the end of the Cold War, Kimmage takes readers through the central events that led to Vladimir Putin seizing a large portion of Ukraine – the Crimea – in 2014 and, eight years later, initiating arguably the most intensive military conflict of the entire post-World War II era. From the halls of power in Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow to the battlefields of Ukraine, Kimmage chronicles Putin's ascendancy to the Russian presidency, delves into multiple American presidencies and their dealings with Russia and Europe, and recounts Europe's efforts to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union. He tells the story of how Ukraine went from an embattled country on the edge of Europe to a formidable military power capable of pushing back the Russian military. Just as importantly, Kimmage captures how the current war has transformed multiple centers of power – from China to the United States – and dramatically altered the path of globalization itself. He makes the case that the war in Ukraine has shifted the direction of major macro-trends in world politics, contributing to the fragmentation of international politics, higher inflation, greater food insecurity, and the general collapse of arms control. These intersecting dangers amount to a new age of global instability, born in war and in the collision between Russia and the United States that has brought the world to the brink of a new Cold War. An authoritative interpretation of possibly the most important geopolitical event of the post-Cold War era, this volume is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of this epochal conflict and its ripple effects across the globe.
The letters and journals of Ernst Moritz and Vera Hirsch Felsenstein, two German Jewish refugees caught in the tumultuous years leading to the Second World War, form the core of this book. Abridged in English from the original German, the correspondence and diaries have been expertly compiled and annotated by their only son who preserves his parents' love story in their own words. Their letters, written from Germany, England, Russia, and Palestine capture their desperate efforts to save themselves and their family, friends and businesses from the fascist tyranny. The book begins by contextualizing the early lives of Moritz and Vera.
Because the letters are written to each other almost daily, they are incredibly immediate. Most centrally, the letters recount an astonishing love story, sensual in its intimate detail, and full of dramatic pathos in revealing the anxieties of being apart as the Nazi threat unfolds and broadens. It is told through the voices of two exceptionally articulate letter writers.
This volume offers insights into the moral and psychological dilemmas faced by German Jews as a targeted community. It affords a unique appreciation of the impact of historical and socio-political upheavals on the lives of a persecuted minority.
A scholarly introduction by Rachel Pistol draws out the main themes raised by this correspondence, observing its relevance to contemporary debates about migration and political authority.
Creating Future People offers readers a fast-paced primer on how advances in genetics will enable parents to influence the traits of their children, including their children's intelligence, moral capacities, physical appearance, and immune system. It explains the science of gene editing and embryo selection and motivates the moral questions it raises by thinking about the strategic aspects of parental choice. Professor Anomaly takes seriously the diversity of preferences parents have, and the limits policymakers face in regulating what will soon be a global market for reproductive technology. Anomaly argues that once embryo selection for complex traits happens it will change the moral landscape by altering the incentives each person faces. All of us will take an interest in the traits everyone else selects, and this will present coordination problems that previous writers on genetic enhancement have failed to consider. Anomaly ends by considering how genetic engineering will transform humanity.
Key Updates to the Second Edition Significant revisions to include more details about what will be scientifically possible in the coming years and the moral issues these developments will raise. New and substantial coverage of embryo selection (guided by polygenic scores) for minimizing the risk of genetic diseases. Engagement with all important, new publications on the science of genetic enhancement
This open access book breaks new ground by examining the significant role played by radio in empowering women in three Francophone West African countries: Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. It examines the representation and perception of key themes broadcast by radio and associated with women's empowerment in the three countries. Each chapter contextualises a specific topic in the country and then explores discrete aspects of radio's provision. The topics covered in the chapters are women's political engagement; women and finances; women and life within marriage; inheritance; women's involvement in radio structures; and radio, internally displaced women, and trauma. Given the social, economic and political vulnerability and deteriorating security situation of the three countries, this book provides a timely and meaningful contribution to acknowledging and understanding the vital role of radio in women's empowerment.
