This study is an attempt to ascertain how sharp oil price changes can affect oil-exporting and oil-importing economies. To this end, a simultaneous equation model (SEM) was applied through a weighted two-stage least squares estimation method to different countries (21 cases) with business relations over the period from Q1 2000 to Q4 2015. In the case of oil-exporting countries - consisting of Iran, the Russian Federation, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan - the findings revealed that they totally benefit from oil price increases. In the case of oil-importing countries, the effects are more diverse. To derive a better interpretation, we divided them into four groups: European Union (EU) members (Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland); East Asian nations (Japan; the People's Republic of China; the Republic of Korea; Viet Nam; Taipei,China; Singapore; and Hong Kong, China); Commonwealth of Independent States (Ukraine and Belarus); and others (the United States, India, and Turkey). The results showed that all these countries importing oil face a negative supply shock, except Turkey which benefits directly from an oil price shock. Furthermore, the indirect effect coefficient received through trade for all these countries was positive.

AbstractTo explore how parental socialization of emotion may influence children's emotion understanding, which then guides children's interpretations of emotion‐related situations across contexts, we examined the pathways between socialization of emotion and children's adjustment in the classroom, with children's emotion understanding as an intervening variable. Specifically, children's emotion understanding was examined as a mediator of associations between mothers' beliefs about the value and danger of children's emotions and children's adjustment in the classroom within an SEM framework. Classroom adjustment was estimated as a latent variable and included social, emotional, and behavioral indices. Covariates included maternal education, and child gender and ethnicity. Participants were a diverse group of 201 third‐graders (116 African American, 81 European American, 4 Biracial; 48.8% female), their mothers, and teachers. Results revealed that emotion‐related beliefs (value and danger) had no direct influence on classroom adjustment. However, children whose mothers endorsed the belief that emotions are dangerous demonstrated less emotion understanding and were less well‐adjusted in the classroom. Mothers' belief that emotions are valuable was not independently associated with emotion understanding. Findings point to the important role of emotion understanding in children's development across contexts (family, classroom) and developmental domains (social, emotional, behavioral) during the middle childhood years.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes were modified with nitrogen plasma in order to enhance cell affinity. The surface properties of the untreated and plasma modified BC (BCP) were analyzed through contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of the plasma treatment on the adhesion of microvascular (HMEC-1), neuroblast (N1E-115) and fibroblast (3T3) cell lines was analyzed. The nitrogen plasma treatment did not increase the wettability of the material, but increased the porosity and surface chemistry, as noticed by the presence of nitrogen. XPS analysis revealed the stability of the modified material along time and autoclave sterilization. The cell adhesion and proliferation of HMEC-1 and N1E-115 cells was significantly improved in the BCP, in contrast with the 3T3 cells, revealing a cell-specific effect. The two-part language course 'English for Students of Social Sciences (UNIcert III)'(1) was developed in the period 2005-2007 within the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci project 'EUROVOLT via VLE'(2). In the process, teaching and learning materials were created taking into consideration the specific experiences and requirements of German students of Political and Managerial Sciences and Sociology. The course aims at the requirements of the professional world of these students.(3) A further important premise was compatibility with the existing UNIcert training level and the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The material was specifically developed for a teaching and learning concept which implements innovative approaches in the combination of online and offline language learning (Blended Learning or BL) and investigates their success. To this end, a test and control group enrolled on the UNIcert III/1 level were available for each semester respectively; the test group had 2 sessions in the multimedia language laboratory and 2 in the classroom (contact sessions), and the control group had 4 contact sessions. Both groups used the same material and dealt with the same topics, the test group online and the control group as printed material.

The obtained experimental load–displacement data for the [0 0 1] crystal orientation reached a qualitative good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations results, leading to strong evidence that the main strengthening factors are associated to sluggish dislocation diffusion, reduced defect sizes and the nucleation of tetrahedral stacking faults. Here, interstitial type prismatic dislocation loops mainly formed by ⅙〈1 1 2〉 Shockley dislocations are nucleated during the loading process, where their interaction leads to the formation of pyramidal shaped stacking fault which are mainly created by ⅓〈1 0 0〉 Hirth dislocations lines. Observing both types of defects coexisting in the same plastic deformation zone by both approaches. Functionalization of nanostructured carbon materials with both non-metallic and metallic atoms is possible in various ways, imparting enhanced or new properties to the starting material, even catalytic activity. A method of electrochemical exfoliation was used to obtain the graphene sheets and simultaneously functionalize them with nitrogen. To ensure N-doping the process is done in a NaN3 electrolyte solution which provides less quantity of oxygen groups that tend to block defect sites on the graphene, compared with such solvents as NaNO2. Two graphite electrodes are inserted into the electrolyte and a pulse power of 0–10V is applied. The solution containing the obtained material is filtered through a 0.1 µm filter and dried. The material is characterized using SEM, XRD and XPS. We report the effect of an ultra-thin Al2O3 layer (down to 3 nm) as interface passivation strategy for the improvement of the performance of Cu2ZnSnS4/CdS based solar cells. After an initial optimization, the Al2O3 deposited by thermal evaporation is proved to improve the properties of the p-n junction. The fabricated devices showed an increment in Voc depending on the composition of the absorber, and an improvement in fill factor (FF) apparently related to the insulation of possible shunt-paths. In this work, for the production of nanocrystalline powders of pure and gadolinium doped iron oxides, the extraction-pyrolytic method (EPM) was used. As a precursor, either iron-containing extract (iron (III) caproate in caproic acid) or its mixture with gadolinium-containing extract (gadolinium (III) valerate in valeric acid) was used. The mixed precursor contained 0.5 mol %, 2.5 mol %, 12.5 mol %, 50 mol %, and 75 mol % gadolinium in relation to the iron content. The formation of iron oxide phases, depending on the preparation conditions, was investigated. According to the results obtained, it was demonstrated that the presence of more than 2.5 mol % gadolinium additive in the mixed precursor inhibits the magnetite-to-hematite transformation process during thermal treatment. Phosphorus has been identified as a critical element by the European Union and recycling efforts are increasingly common. An important phosphorus-containing waste stream for recycling is municipal sewage sludge (MSS), which is used directly as fertilizer to farmland. However, it contains pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs) and nano-plastics. The interest in combustion of MSS is continuously growing, as it both reduces the volume as well as destroys the organic materials and could separate certain heavy metals from the produced ashes. This results in ashes with a potential for either direct use as fertilizer or as a suitable feedstock for upgrading processes. The aim of this study was to investigate co-combustion of MSS and biomass to create a phosphorus-rich bottom ash with a low heavy metal content. A laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor in addition to an 8 MWth grate-boiler was used for the experimental work. The concentration of phosphorus and selected heavy metals in the bottom ashes were compared to European Union regulation on fertilizers, ash application to Swedish forests and Swedish regulations on sewage sludge application to farmland. Element concentrations were determined by ICP-AES complemented by analysis of spatial distribution with SEM-EDS and XRD analysis to determine crystalline compounds. The results show that most of the phosphorus was retained in the bottom ash, corresponding to 9&ndash ; 16 wt.% P2O5, while the concentration of cadmium, mercury, lead and zinc was below the limits of the regulations. However, copper, chromium and nickel concentrations exceeded these standards.

In the current study a novel geopolymer created from waste materials (namely fly ash and black slag) has been characterised as a potential high temperature thermal energy storage material option. Several geopolymer samples have been fabricated and characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the density and heat capacity have been determined. Lastly, the cost of the material and packed bed system was estimated showing that the geopolymer-based systems are potentially 35% cheaper than the traditional 2-tank molten salt systems. ; This research was performed as part of the Australian Solar Thermal Research Institute (ASTRI), a project supported by the Australian Government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record. ; Low-shot sketch-based image retrieval is an emerging task in computer vision, allowing to retrieve natural images relevant to hand-drawn sketch queries that are rarely seen during the training phase. Related prior works either require aligned sketchimage pairs that are costly to obtain or inefficient memory fusion layer for mapping the visual information to a semantic space. In this paper, we address any-shot, i.e. zero-shot and few-shot, sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) tasks, where we introduce the few-shot setting for SBIR. For solving these tasks, we propose a semantically aligned paired cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (SEM-PCYC) for any-shot SBIR, where each branch of the generative adversarial network maps the visual information from sketch and image to a common semantic space via adversarial training. Each of these branches maintains cycle consistency that only requires supervision at the category level, and avoids the need of aligned sketch-image pairs. A classification criteria on the generators' outputs ensures the visual to semantic space mapping to be class-specific. Furthermore, we propose to combine textual and hierarchical side information via an auto-encoder that selects discriminating side information within a same end-to-end model. Our results demonstrate a significant boost in any-shot SBIR performance over the state-of-the-art on the extended version of the challenging Sketchy, TU-Berlin and QuickDraw datasets. ; European Union: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant ; European Research Council (ERC)

The silicon isotopic composition ( 30Si) of deep sea sponges' skeletal element - spicules - reflects the silicic acid (DSi) concentration of their surrounding water and can be used as natural archives of bottom water nutrients. In order to reconstruct the past silica cycle robustly, it is essential to better constrain the mechanisms of biosilicification, which are not yet well understood. Here, we show that the apparent isotopic fractionation ( 30Si) during spicule formation in deep sea sponges from the equatorial Atlantic ranges from ĝ'6.74 ‰ to ĝ'1.50 ‰ in relatively low DSi concentrations (15 to 35 μM). The wide range in isotopic composition highlights the potential difference in silicification mechanism between the two major classes, Demospongiae and Hexactinellida. We find the anomalies in the isotopic fractionation correlate with skeletal morphology, whereby fused framework structures, characterised by secondary silicification, exhibit extremely light 30Si signatures compared with previous studies. Our results provide insight into the processes involved during silica deposition and indicate that reliable reconstructions of past DSi can only be obtained using silicon isotope ratios derived from sponges with certain spicule types. © Author(s) 2018. ; Acknowledgements. Polyaniline coated conducting fabrics have been obtained by chemical oxidation of aniline by potassium peroxydisulfate on polyester fabrics. Two different acids have been employed to carry out the synthesis (HCl and H 2SO 4), obtaining the best results of conductivity with the latter one. The conducting fabrics have been characterized chemically by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR), energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The morphology of the coatings has been observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The conducting properties of the fabrics have been measured by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical characterization has been carried out by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The conducting fabrics have also shown electrochromic properties, changing its color from green yellowish at -1 V to dark green at +2 V. The durability of the coating has been evaluated by means of washing and rubbing fastness tests. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
