Efforts at coordination between nations are at the heart of the challenges of globalization. Despite steadily growing interdependencies, individual nations still have specific interests that present obstacles to globalization. While some challenges inspired by the need to coordinate are viewed as inevitable by many, they are less optimistic about prospects for success. Jan-Erik Lane argues that one should focus objectively upon the possibility of failures. Lane analyzes four kinds of challenges to interdependency, all of which are growing in geopolitical relevance. First, countries need to diminish their dependency on fossil fuel and shift to a reliable supply of energy, because fossil fuels are diminishing. Second, environmental degradation must be addressed, because it is accelerating under the strain of earth's population. Lane advocates an ecological footprint approach. Third, a single global market economy and its complexities must be addressed, as national economies are increasingly opened. Finally, as traditional state sovereignty weakens, foreign military intervention in both international and intra-state conflicts increases. Governments are attempting to address these interdependencies, or reply to the challenges they pose, mainly through international organizations and regionalism. These efforts are discussed at length. In addition, problems with international law are reviewed, as Lane warns against the utopian hopes of global constitutionalism. Open-ended survey questions can provide researchers with nuanced and rich data, but content analysis is subject to misinterpretation and can introduce bias into subsequent analysis. We present a simple method to improve the semantic validity of a codebook and test for bias: a "self-coding" method where respondents first provide open-ended responses and then self-code those responses into categories. We demonstrated this method by comparing respondents' self-coding to researcher-based coding using an established codebook. Our analysis showed significant disagreement between the codebook's assigned categorizations of responses and respondents' self-codes. Moreover, this technique uncovered instances where researcher-based coding disproportionately misrepresented the views of certain demographic groups. We propose using the self-coding method to iteratively improve codebooks, identify bad-faith respondents, and, perhaps, to replace researcher-based content analysis.

Background/Objective: The Chinese government is actively developing the rural economy and promoting the poverty alleviation campaign. The economic development of the traditional agricultural areas is essential to people's basic livelihood and social stability. The tourism industry has been proven to be an effective approach to promote the regional economy. It has become a hot issue as to how to develop the tourism industry in rural areas. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Based on a corresponding index system, a coupling coordination model was established to explore the coupling and coordination development of the agricultural industry and the tourism industry in Henan province, a traditional agricultural area in China. Findings: The result revealed that although the coupling degree between the agricultural and the tourism industry from the year of 2009 to 2018 is relatively stable, the coordination degree shows a continuous rising trend from 0.278 to 0.921. This indicated that the agricultural industry and the tourism industry in Henan province continues to interact with and influence each other, and the comprehensive development level and the coordination degree of the two industries have been constantly improved. Implications: From the result, it can be seen that the integration development of the agricultural industry and the tourism industry could be a new path to develop the economy of rural areas. From the perspective of sustainable development, suggestions are proposed to optimize the agricultural industrial structure, extend tourism industry chain and construct support policy to develop a sustainable mode of the agricultural industry and the tourism industry.

The three papers that comprise this dissertation all start with the premise that parties and other social groups have an incentive to coordinate their activities. Each paper then explores how this strategic incentive shapes beliefs of individuals within these parties and other organizations (Paper 1 and 2); or, how coordination within legislatures shapes the way voters come view parties and their candidates, and how this may in turn affect the cost that parties pay over time to coordinate their activities in Congress (Paper 3)

Previous immigration facilitates future immigration, a phenomenon called network migration. While well recognized, previous research has mainly focused on the implications of immigrant networks on future migrants. In contrast, this paper derives a simple model from the perspective of the incumbent immigrant population by introducing sub‐networks and argues that the incumbent migrants fail to achieve a Pareto optimal network size due to differences in inter‐ and intra‐migrant group externalities and subsequently coordination failures. In short, it stresses the active role incumbents take in the provision of network effects and provides theoretical evidence that self‐perpetuating and sustained immigration is not at odds with rational acting individuals. It also shows that optimally chosen migration quotas may appeal to incumbent migration cohorts and provides an alternative explanation for inter‐ and intra‐migrant group tensions.

The use of information and communication technologies to support public administrations, governments and decision makers has been recorded for more than 20 years and dubbed e-Government. Moving towards open governance roadmaps worldwide, electronic participation and citizen engagement stand out as a new domain, important both for decision makers and citizens; and over the last decade, there have been a variety of related pilot projects and innovative approaches. Lastly, the third section on Future Research Directions of Open, Collaborative ICT-enabled Governance provides a constructive critique of the developments in the past and presents prospects regarding future challenges and research directions. The book is mainly written for academic researchers and graduate students working in the computer, social, political and management sciences. Its audience includes researchers and practitioners in e-Governance, public administration officials, policy and decision makers at the local, national and international level engaged in the design and creation of policies and services, and ICT professionals engaged in e-Governance and policy modelling projects andsolutions.
