An initial analogical methodology for the analysis and validation of anomalous cognitive and linguistic operations in small group subliteral narrative (fantasy theme) reports is presented. Subliteral narratives (fantasy themes) are linguistic expressions that carry two or more levels of meaning, often referred to as "symbolic, " "metaphoral, " or figurative language. The methodology and cognitive-linguistic operations are instantiated with data derived from protocols transcribed from small group interactions. The significance of such anomalous findings bear on cognitive research, on story narratives, similarity relations, action ships, speech errors, analogical reasoning, isomorphic relations, structure mapping, metaphor comprehension, affective schemata, and transformation of invariance. Some implications are discussed.

The interpretive, developmental process of refiguring the ego is examined as it occurs in the perceptions of self, mediated by the cultural milieu of a student group and concretized in the narrations of personal journal writings. Students kept journals for private use; thus the audience for the journal narrative is the self. Narratives were explored for modes or styles of communication. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate not only that self-understandings are concretized through speech acts but that people actively engage in ongoing construction of the self, in the presence of others and through the use of types of communication in everyday language.

THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES POLITICAL THEORY BY MEANS OTHER THAN IS COMMON IN THE DISCIPLINE. MORE TYPICAL ACTIVITIES INVOLVE THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE THOUGHT OF OUR PREDECESSORS; AND CLARIFICATION OF THE LANGUAGES AND CONCEPTS WE ALTERNATELY TAKE FOR GRANTED AND DEBATE AS CITIZENS AND SCHOLARS. THE EXERCISE UNDERTAKEN HERE IS NOT MEANT TO DISCREDIT, OR MINIMIZE THE ENDURING SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO THE SUBJECT. RATHER, THE INTENT IS TO SITUATE AND RESPOND TO SOME OF THE RECENT DISENCHANTMENT AND SENSE OF PROFESSIONAL MALAISE IN THE VARIETY OF GAPS AND INTERSTICES THAT THIS MORE TRADITIONAL DIVISION OF ACADEMIC LABOR CREATES AND HELPS TO SUSTAIN.

THIS ARTICLE IS PRINTED IN FRENCH. IT COMPARES THE LEXICAL PERFORMANCES OF CANADIAN POLITICAL LEADERS IN THE FRENCH-LANGUAGE LEADERS' DEBATE BROADCAST DURING THE FEDERAL ELECTION OF 1988, IN ORDER TO TEST SOME HYPOTHESES CONCERING THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY THE LEADERS AND THEIR RESPECTIVE ROLE IN THE PARTY SYSTEM. THE AUTHOR SHOWS THAT THE POLITICAL DISCOURSE OF THE LEADER OF THE GOVERNMENT PARTY DOES NOT FOLLOW THE SAME LINE OF ARGUMENTATION AS THOSE DEVELOPED BY THE LEADERS OF OPPOSING PARTIES. IT CONCLUDES WITH ESTIMATES OF THE IMPORTANCE GRANTED TO THE CRITIQUES OF THE RESPECTIVE ADVERSARIES AND SPECIFIC PROSITIONS FOR THE FUTURE.

The "politically correct" speech codes on US university campuses to punish language offensive to minorities are examined from the perspective of the rights guaranteed under the First & Fourteenth Amendments & their effects on minority & nonminority students. It appears that liberal & politically moderate students are more intimidated by the codes than conservative students, & there are differences in perceptions by minority groups of what is politically correct for their particular group. It is concluded that speech codes will continue to limit expression on campuses, to the detriment of students who are protected from the situations of the real world. M. Malas

The author points out that the performance of Australian business in East and Southeast Asia is less than outstanding. He suggests ways to improve this performance. He thinks that the universities in Australia do need to increase their capacity to provide good, general, business-oriented education with a strong backbone of study in the language, history and culture of an Asian region. The need for some form of institutional backing is discussed for the effective co-ordination of the university system's resources in Asian studies with the need for a process by which the needs of business in Asia can be identified, solutions proposed and then marketed. The article explores the situation, post-Holocaust Viennese society and rising anti-Semitism in Waldheim-Austria, and the background against which Schwaiger, an established mainstream Austrian author, writes the life history of Deutsch, a Holocaust survivor from Silesia whose native language is Yiddish. The relationship between interviewer and informant is analyzed as one of exploitation of a marginalized woman by a privileged one. Problems of ethics and authenticity are discussed and the question is raised whether Schwaiger exploits Deutsch for economic and ideological reasons, or whether the stereotypes and misrepresentations are the result of unnoticed cultural, intellectual, and linguistic barriers.

The development of the traditionalist movement in Iran through the use of contemporary tools of communication for popular mobilization is examined. The sociopolitical background of modern mass media in Iran is analyzed. Indigenous public communications systems are described, along with the adaptation of modern electronic communication technologies to extend their range & power. Einleitend auf die dem Machtantritt Nursultan Nazarbayevs vorangegangenen russisch-kasachischen Konflikte um die Besetzung der kasachischen KP-Spitze verweisend, analysiert die Autorin die politische Programmatik des neuen KPK-Chefs. Als Anzeichen eines politischen Kurswechsels im Sinne einer "kasachischen Perestroika" bewertet sie die neue Sprachgesetzgebung, die die nationale Sprache zur offiziellen Staatssprache der Republik erhebt, die liberale Haltung gegenüber dem Islam, die neue Hinwendung zu den "weißen Flecken" der kasachischen Geschichte sowie die Position der KPK in Fragen der Ökologie und der ökonomischen Autonomie Kasachstans. Ihr Interesse gilt in diesem Kontext auch der Rolle oppositioneller Gruppierungen, z.B. der "Nevada-Semipalatinsk-Bewegung" des Schriftstellers Olzhas Suleymenov. (BIOst-hml)

The authors' discussion of the theoretical issues implied in interdisciplinary studies of sociology and literature is based on their analyses of selected works of sociology, literary theory, and cultural criticism produced during the past twenty years. Attempts to integrate the areas of sociology and literature have resulted in three general approaches: sociology through literature, the sociology of literature, and the study of sociology and literature based on their common dependence on language. The authors analyze the theoretical issues and assumptions that underlie each of these approaches in order to suggest a way to study sociology and literature which retains the richness and complexity of both disciplines.

So far, the Grundrisse, Contribution and 'Urtext' to the Contribution have been published in the English-language Complete Works, Volumes 28 and 20. Of the 1861-63 manuscripts, which consist of 1472 notebooks in all, the first have been available in translation as the three parts of Theories of Surplus Value. The remaining manuscripts have been translated and publication is forthcoming. The article assesses the difficulties faced by Marx in presenting the capitalist form of social reproduction in a dialectical form. Heinrich argues that the Economic Manuscripts of 1861/63 provide explanation for the changes of Marx's plan in the Grundrisse and Capital.

The 'downward sweep' of Japan after Pearl Harbor has been widely noted for its long-term effects in Southeast Asia. The rule of the established colonial masters was shattered, and those failing to escape disappeared into the camps of the Kempeitai. In Burma and Java, in particular, Japanese rule promoted local organizations, local administratiors, the indigenous language and, in Burma, a 'national' government and a 'national' army, under Japanese supervision: the one thing Japan did not bring was freedom and independence. Yet the greatly-increased social mobility and political, military and administrative experience had long-term consequences: none of the post-war attempts at colonial restoration proved viable.

This study explored the utility of computer-aided, self-instruction training for enhancing reflective problem-solving among impulsive hearing-impaired adolescent students. Sixteen moderate to severely hearing-impaired students were randomly assigned to either a treatment or control condition. The self-instruction treatment condition consisted of training to solve visual problems using a modified version of the LOGO computer language (REFLECT) and videotape feedback. The control condition consisted of LOGO problem-solving without self-instruction. Instruction took place over 12 weeks. On two dependent measures of impulsive problem-solving behaviors, students in the treatment condition demonstrated significantly improved problem-solving ability.

I HIGHLIGHTED AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL SCIENTISTS. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY AN ANALYSIS OF INDIVIDUAL WRITERS AND THE COLLECTIVE IMPACT WHICH THEY POTENTIALLY HOLD. CENTRAL ASIAN LITERATURE HOLDS PARTICULAR INTEREST FOR THE AUTHOR, SINCE THIS STREAM HAS DEALT SO INTENSIVELY WITH THE IDEA OF JUSTICE AND THE RELATED IDEA OF FAIRNESS, AS WELL AS WITH THE ACTIVATION OF INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.
