Traditionally, applied aspects of human geography are mainly associated with economic geography, regional development and spatial planning. In the debate on the application potential of the discipline, a number of important problems of social, political and cultural geography, relevant to various contemporary processes on a global and regional scale, are marginalized. For this reason, the author undertakes a critical rethinking of the current debate on the applied aspects of research in human geography. A brief review of the conceptual and institutional development of applied geography in the world and in selected national schools is made. The author also distinguishes two research orientations: 1) strategic orientation – connected to studies carried out at the international, national and macro-regional spatial levels; 2) operational orientation – concerning applied studies undertook on a scale of separate municipalities, cities, neighbourhoods or even separate streets and buildings. Taking an attempt to overcome the narrow understandings of the frameworks of applied human geography, the author presents a new definition and tries to identify the main challenges for geographers that work in the field of Human Geography. Applied aspects of basic directions of human geography from the point of view of their broader interdisciplinary ties are also indicated.

Responding to new government regulations about reporting data, a social service agency decided to require caseworkers to use laptop computers extensively, taking these devices with them on calls to clients. The resistance of caseworkers to this mandate and this change provided an opportunity to examine the phenomena of technology resistance. Initially rooting the study in known models for examining technology resistance, researchers found the need to expand upon these models to acknowledge other social aspects, as well as individual aspects to alterations in work behavior. Perceiving that professional identity was at issue, the study employed concepts from Kling's social aspects of computing and Schein's career anchor theory, and used qualitative methods including an adaptation of Sacks's membership category analysis method from the field of ethnomethodology that led to insights about the underlying causes of IT resistance among social service workers. The originality of this micro-level approach lies in its ability to explore moral aspects of professional and personal identity. The approach revealed, in this situation, that workers' resistance was based particularly on a local history of organizational dysfunction in addition to elements such as performance and effort expectancy, attitudes, and anxiety that is typically discussed in the information technology acceptance literature.

Cet article présente une discussion sur les défis concernant le développement des représentations sociales dans la psycho-logie. Comme toute construction théorique capable d'apporter un éclairage sur de nouveaux aspects dans la pensée scientifique, le concept de représentation sociale s'est étendu par la voie de différents auteurs qui l'utilisent à partir de bases théoriques et méthodologiques singulières. Dans la discussion sur les alternatives courantes concernant le développement des représentations sociales, le concept de subjectivité est culturel. À partir de ce cadre, le concept de subjectivité est tout à fait redéfini, ce qui lui apporte un sens nouveau faisant partie d'un système théorique innovateur. La subjectivité est alors conçue non pas comme un phénomène exclusivement individuel mais comme une importante dimension de tout phénomène social. Le concept de subjectivité est discuté par rapport à ses conséquences pour le développement des représentations sociales. Cette discussion implique la subjectivité sociale, la représentation subjective et sociale dans un système complexe et dynamique.
