This study analyzes the nexus between the executive and judicial branches in understanding presidential success in domestic policy making from a system of separated powers perspective. The author investigates the nature of the interaction between the solicitor general and the Supreme Court's rulings in cases in which the federal government participated in the subissue area of civil rights during the Kennedy administration. The author found that the administration's civil rights litigation stralegy was highly succesful before the Warren Court. However, a content analysis of the solicitor general's briefs revealed a more complex and cautious approach to the civil rights cases. I conclude by suggesting that an insightful line of inquiry into understanding presidential influence in domestic policy making should include, not exclude, the Supreme Court.

This article examines the limitations of the construct of race in the study of the diversity of human development. The author proposes that a focus on ethnicity as relates to people of African descent in the United States offers greater explanatory power. The article acknowledges the value of moving away from social address registers in the study of human development, but cautions that this emerging theoretical orientation should not diminish the stable and enduring patterns of continuity within and across the African-American community. The author argues that the field faces both conceptual and methodological challenges in studying human development in its complexity. She offers additional cautions in terms of methodological approaches that seek to capture that complexity.

This article focuses on the Arab tradition of mediation and reconciliation known as sulha, as it is practiced in Galilee villages in tandem with the state justice system in cases of murder. Drawing on incidents occurring between 1992 and 1996, the author describes and analyzes the underlying principles of the sulha process, the formation of the mediating body, its mechanisms and procedures, and finally the formal public ceremony that ends the conflict between the families of the victim and the attacker. By highlighting sulha practice and its underlying ideals of cooperation, negotiation, and compromise, the author challenges the emphasis on violence and feud that characterizes much of the anthropological literature on Arab society and politics.

Using autoethnographic scenes from her lived experiences, the author argues that butchness is a discursive and performative practice in a sexist, heterosexist culture that engages female-bodied people, in particular lesbians, in the expression of ableness. The author uses the notions of dresses and boats as metaphors for requisite femininity and ableness, respectively, and argues that butchness is used as a resource to respond—personally and theoretically—to a culture that sees the female body as less competent than the male body. This article suggests that theories of gender and sexuality must be more attentive to practices of constructing self in everyday life and that they must give greater consideration to how individuals present themselves to various audiences.

In this paper, the author discusses assessment of student learning in light of
evolving accreditation standards. The author describes the Indiana Model—a comprehensive
approach that includes: (a) a Course-Learning Objectives (CLO) classification
system to organize and analyze the total array of course learning objectives
addressed in a curriculum, (b) a direct Assessment of Student Learning system to
demonstrate student learning outcomes, and (c) an indirect Assessment of Student
Learning system to provide for the perspectives of consumers and other stakeholders.
When integrated, the three systems may be used for curriculum analysis and development,
assessment of student learning, and program evaluation—particularly in
terms of student learning outcomes. The proposed integrated approach to student
learning assessment addresses both university and professional accreditation standards.

Despite the voluminous literature on participation, when it comes to the participatory behavior of racial and ethnic minorities and lower-income groups, many questions remain unanswered. The author tests the extent to which four theoretical models—socioeconomic status, psychological orientations, social context, and mobilization resource—explain the participation of whites, African-Americans, and Latinos in local political and community activities. Based on a sample of inner-city New York respondents, the author finds that existing theories differentially explain participation across both ethnic group and participatory activity. More generally, the findings indicate that more attention needs to be focused on how the broader social and institutional environment shapes the behaviors and attitudes that ultimately foster political engagement.

In this article, the author reviews 78 studies addressing the relocation of the elderly. He begins by defining the four major forms of relocation and describing the trends in the current health care marketplace precipitating relocation events. Next, he reviews the major findings of studies assessing the potential negative and positive outcomes of relocation. These outcomes include changes in mortality rates, morbidity, and psychological or social changes. In addition, factors associated with successful relocation are presented. Finally, the primary contribution of this article is that the author assesses the strengths and limitations of this prior literature and combines the research he reviews in an analytic model. This model helps show some opportunities for future research in the relocation of the elderly.

The aim of the article is to analyze the notion of the history of national sociology and to discuss the methodological problems that the notion suggests. The author takes his point of departure by distinguishing two traditions in the historiography of the history of sociology: the history of ideas and the analytical tradition. The difference of historiographic traditions is the difference of function of the history of sociology: while the history of ideas is connected with the development of the identity of a discipline, the analytical is concerned with the sociological self-understanding of the discipline. The author of the article attempts to define an analytical methodology to analyze the history of national sociology.

According to this article, Gore lost the 2000 presidential election due to the limits of his campaign, as well as to strategies the Bush campaign employed that won more votes than projected. The author believes the key issues in this election were the personal qualities of Bush & Gore, specific issues, & strategic choices made by the Bush campaign. The author specifically looks at Clinton's popularity, Nader's presence in the election, Bush's ability to manage relations with the far Right &, crucially, Gore's pursuit of style over substance in his campaign. The article presents an analysis of the "normative innovation" development that is consistent with Bourdieu's theory of practice rather than with the work of Robert Jackson. The author begins with a discussion of Jackson's sovereignty games, alternative approaches to sovereignty, & the origins of the Third World. He then examines changes in the sovereignty game resulting from globalization prior to the Rio Summit of 1992, including reorganization of the world economy, the roles of states vs quasi states, & cultural homogenization. Sustainable development in Third World nations has been a key issue since the 1980s.
