Administrative asylum procedures are permeated by tensions between rationalities of legality, efficiency, and deterrence in asylum casework and their various effects on cases. Based on ethnographic research in the Swiss asylum administration, this book unveils the pragmatics and politics of rendering asylum cases resolvable by re-cording the lives of applicants in terms of asylum. With his reading of power and agency in administrations, Ephraim Pörtner offers a critical view of the intricate relationship between practices of asylum casework and the governmental need to resolve claims of people seeking protection.

Any in-depth research on Czech emigration to the West in the communist era, & on the return of these emigrants in the 1990s, has until now been almost non-existent, although it could provide a deeper comprehension of present Czech society & its cultural values. The article provides a strong theoretical basis for this kind of study, which starts out from P. Berger's & T. Luckmann's theory of socialization, & compares it with the socioeconomic point of view, considered the most useful research method for this particular field. After a brief description of former developments, the article concentrates on a more detailed analysis of the recent process of the emigrants' return, which is described on the basis of qualitative biographical research. The author attempts to explain why the emigrants decided to return, including the factors of their prosperity abroad & their attitudes to modern capitalism & analyzes the process of their (re-)integration into Czech society. The main conclusion is that economic & work characteristics have played the most important role in the decision, although some other factors (especially time) must also be taken into account. The emigrants who have returned to the Czech Republic have found above-average employment positions in the country. However, their social adaptation contrasts sharply with this prosperity, partly owing to the envy of other people, & partly as a result of the significant difference in attitudes towards individual-collective relations.
; The chaotic nature of the migratory legislation of the Russian Federation in the Post-Soviet period has created the need to formulate a unified evidence-based approach to the assessment of the efficiency of Russian migration policy. The author proposes a new method for estimating the relative success of international labor-migration management in a particular region. This method has been approved for the Ural Federal District territories. The results show that the negative impact of migration exceeds the possible advantages of implementing its labor potential by 4-5 times in the Ural federal district over the period of 2008-2014. Based on these results the modern migratory legislation of the Russian Federation is characterized as inefficient. To improve the efficiency of the management of international labor migration in the Russian regions, the author proposes a new organization-legal model for attracting and employing the labor migrants.
Migration movements in the south border of México with Guatemala, has motivated serious social, economic and politic un-stability in both countries. During the last decades of the XX-th century, the sites of the south zone have become in zones with high violence indexes, delinquency and migration, instead of being only riches tropical forests. A sample was selected using the connections among the migrants present in the studied zone. We used Correspondence Analysis for establishing graphically , the dependence and interdependence relations among the categorical variables using a contingency table, enhancing the identification of the relation of the structure, similarity and dissimilarity, proximity or farthermost among objects/individuals and attributes. This technique allowed developing an analysis between origin-destiny of the migrants, with respect to the indexes considered in this study.
This evaluation is a part of the project "Integrating Refugee and Asylum-seeking Children in the Educational Systems of EU Member States: Evaluation and Promotion of Current Best Practices" (INTEGRACE). The main objective of the INTEGRACE project is to promote the educational integration of refugee and asylum-seeking children (RASC) in the EU by developing common standards and sharing best practices in policies and programmes development and evaluation, with a specific focus on the needs of vulnerable groups (e.g. children who have been victims of crime, unaccompanied children). The main purpose of this evaluation of best practices concerning refugee and asylum-seeking children (RASC) will be "[.] to analyze to what extent and under what conditions, these practices could be replicated in a different context." The principle aim of this evaluation and of the SIA to be conducted in Slovenia and Bulgaria will be to assess the possibility of replication and the social impacts of the eventual implementation of a practice which has already been identified and evaluated as a good one in some of the old member states of EU. The aim of the conducted evaluation is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from old to new EU member States, thereby allowing the latter to deal more effectively with the their new migration situation. Furthermore, the evaluation at hand will provide the grounds for developing a common EU framework to addressing the educational needs of RASC in the near future. In the Swedish country report a number of so-called best practices aimed for RASC were described. Based on responses and discussions with the partner in Slovenia, a case was chosen on the implementation of the "General recommendations for newly arrived pupils" in three schools in Bollnäs, a municipality, located in the middle of Sweden. This report, will therefore analyse in detail how these "General recommendations" are implemented into the Swedish school system in light of an evaluation conducted by the authority The Schools Inspectorate ...
Deniers of climate change sometimes quip that claims about global warming are more about political science than climate science. They are wrong on the science, but may be right with respect to its political implications. A hotter world, this book argues, will bring unprecedented migrations, famine, war, and disease. It will be a social and political disaster of the first order. This book takes climate change out of the realm of scientific abstraction to explore its real-world consequences.
