Forests are an essential component of the lorraine landscape and environment and a valuable part of the heritage of the province. Therefore, they play an important part in country planning schemes and are still considered in many cases as a stake to be taken into account. An analysis of wooded areas is a reliable testimony of the success or failure of the successive planning policies applied and the various harmful actions it had to suffer (inconsistencies of the re-structuring schemes, preference given to resinous species, damages due to wars, annexion : 1871-1918. The area covered by forests has risen by 100 000 ha since 1945 and this development has been paired with an increase of the proportion of tall fully-grown trees in decicuous forests. The timber industry has become a very promising branch for the economy of lorraine, though results are rather fluctuating. Its future is closely linked to the development of research in sylviculture and the existence of an innovative and efficient forest management sector. Though it exposed to many threats (acid rain, various forms of pollution, encroaching urbanisation, extension of fallow land) the forest contributes greatly to the quality of lorraine landscapes and should make the re-structuring process of the local economy easier (timber industry line, tourism and leisure activities) ; La forêt est une composante essentielle du paysage lorrain. Treball de fi de màster en Estudis del Discurs: Comunicació, Societat i Aprenentatge ; Este estudio analiza la cobertura de los principales medios españoles sobre el conflicto vasco en su etapa post-armada, centrándose especialmente en los modelos mentales que promueven cuando tratan sobre los presos del conflicto político. Explora los razonamientos que legitiman el encarcelamiento después de que ETA anunciara, en octubre de 2011, el fin de sus atentados. Observa cómo los medios despliegan un cuadrado ideológico polarizando los intereses de los presos/ny la izquierda independentista vasca por un lado (el exogrupo), y los intereses del Estado Español y la sociedad española por el Otro (endogrupo), reforzado por la presentación negativa del otro y la autopresentación positiva. Los presos son generalmente presentados como victimarios y culpables, mientras que el conflicto en sí es percibido como una situación de enfrentamiento donde ETA es el objetivo a reducir; y la paz, como un escenario que implica irremediablemente la victoria (militar y discursiva) del endogrupo. Finalmente, se comparan las observaciones del análisis con los principios del Periodismo de Paz, concluyendo que los medios españoles no promueven modelos mentales que promueven la empatía y la reconciliación. ; This study analyzes the coverage of the two main Spanish newspapers about the Basque conflict after its armed phase, focusing on the construction of mental models when dealing with the question about the prisoners of political conflict. It explores the arguments that legitimize the imprisonment after the armed organization ETA announced the end of its attacks on October 2011. This study found that the media display an ideological square, polarizing the interests of prisoners and the Basque independentist left on one side (the outgroup), and the interests of the Spanish state and the Spanish society on the other (the ingroup), intensified by the negative presentation of the other and positive self-presentation. Prisoners are usually presented as victimizers and guilty; therefore, mental models that oppose their freedom are easily activated. The conflict itself is perceived as a confrontational situation where ETA is the aim to eliminate; and peace, as a scenario which inevitably means the victory (military and discursive) of the ingroup over the outgroup. Finally, the observations of the analysis are compared with the principles of Peace Journalism, concluding that the Spanish media do not promote mental models that evoke empathy and reconciliation between the different actors involved in the conflict.

The practice for journalists to present an identity and brand the self on social media has become common across many newsrooms, yet its practice is still poorly understood. Focusing on journalists' self-representations on the social network site Twitter, this study aims to address the lack of empirical understanding through an analysis of the identities which political journalists present on their Twitter profile pages. A total of 679 accounts of parliamentary press gallery journalists in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom were analyzed, with a focus on various textual and visual pieces of professional and personal information. The article develops scales of corporate and personal identity, finding that UK and Canadian journalists most strongly differentiate between personal and corporate identities. Differences across countries are linked to political and economic aspects of the respective media systems.

Background: Avian influenza is a serious infectious disease attracting great concerns of the world. It not only results in a huge economic loss but also poses a great threat to public health, and poultry production plays a major role of transmission as well as a locus of pathogen evolution, mutation and adaptation of avian influenza virus between wild birds and humans. Therefore, biosecurity measures along the poultry supply chains are important to prevent and control avian influenza. My objective was to summarize the past and present various measures against avian influenza in the industrial, commercial and backyard poultry production systems. Methods: A literature search was performed by PubMed, HKU Scholar Hub and Google. Based on the inclusion criterion and exclusion criterion, the relevant articles were selected with full text in English up to 11st, July 2013. Results: A total of 18 articles were found among the 474 potentially relevant articles. Among these articles, 17articlescame from PubMed and 1 article came from HKU Scholar Hub; 2 articles were closely related to industrial poultry production, 9 articles were closely related to commercial poultry production, 3 articles were closely related to village, rural or backyard poultry production and the rest 4 articles mixed the biosecurity measures in the different poultry production systems. These articles covered various biosecurity measures such as surveillance and monitoring, segregation, cleaning and disinfection, vaccination, training for workers, stamping out, controlling markets and poultry management in the developing and developed countries. Discussion: The common control measures are discussed and the biosecurity is aneffective way to prevent the avian influenza outbreaks in poultry and then to protect the health of all people. However, there were still limitations when implementing biosecurity. Due to local social, cultural, economic, psychological and political factors, it is difficult to prevent and control the avian influenza outbreaks in the poultry supply chains only by one single measure or individual. Objectives: To inform related stakeholders on current policy and programme development for the older population in Indonesia. Method: Compilation of various primary and secondary data on policy and programme development. Results: Older persons are defined as those men or women of age 60 years and above. The current life expectancy for the Indonesian populatoin is 68 years. It will be the same number as the under five years population in the next decade and double its current number in the next two decades. Highlights in policy on older persons are (1) The enactment of Law 13 in 1998 on Older Persons Welfare; (2)National Plan of Action for Older Person Welfare Guidelines in 2003; and (3)Presidential Decree on the formation of the National Regional Commissions on Ageing in 2004. Presently, older persons programme development is focused on community-based home care and older person empowerment in the rural areas. The main focus of these programmes is on poor and neglected older persons; the majority are older females. The pilot study is being conducted by an older person NGO, Yayasan Emong Lansia, in cooperation with various government and non-government stakeholders both national and international with funding from the Republic of Korea through ASEAN. This project has cooperated with the National Training Centre on Ageing that has trained 40 volunteers as home helpers or home companions of 40 poor neglected older persons living in the community of Tegal Alur sub-district, west Jakarta. These older persons, were selected from 400 living in this community. Volunteers were trained from community social workers, women groups, and youth Red Cross members. The training was a 4-day course followed by fieldwork, and their main tasks were to provide older personswith companionship, personal care, house services, personal activities, and referral services. Another main programme was Older Person Empowerment coordinated by the Coordinating Minister's office for People Welfare. A pilot study was conducted in Jakarta that covered a substantial number of older persons in Indonesia and had developed community-based progammes at the grass-roots level. The main function of these older person groups was providing services in health, socialization, supplementary feeding, exercise, and economic productive activities.

Fallgirls provides an analysis of the abuses that took place at Abu Ghraib in terms of social theory, gender and power, based on first-hand participant-observations of the courts-martials of Lynndie England and Sabrina Harman. This book examines the trials themselves, including interactions with soldiers and defense teams, documents pertaining to the courts-martials, US government reports and photographs from Abu Ghraib, in order to challenge the view that the abuses were carried out at the hands of a few rogue soldiers. With a keen focus on gender and sexuality as prominent aspects of the abuses themselves, as well as the ways in which they were portrayed and tried, Fallgirls engages with modern feminist thought and contemporary social theory in order to analyse the manner in which the abuses were framed, whilst also exploring the various lived realities of Abu Ghraib by both prisoners and soldiers alike.

This edited volume analyses and discusses the systematisation of Polish socio-economic transformations of the last three decades using selected examples of the most important changes. 1989 marked the onset of the political transformation process in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The transition involved a shift from a socialist system to a parliamentary democracy and from a command economy to a market one. Due to the deep economic crisis that culminated in 1988 and the peaceful model of change developed and implemented in Poland, the magnitude and manner of implementing various initiatives was unprecedented and had specific implications. This transformation opened Polish society and the Polish economy to the impact of global social and economic changes, triggering successive transformations, often overlapping in terms of their causes and consequences. This publication aims to present the course and effects, in particular territorial, of Poland's socio-economic transformation in the years 19902020. The analysis covers the key aspects of this transformation, illustrated with references to the concepts and theories of development, domestic and foreign literature, own empirical research and existing or newly developed model approaches to transformation in the territorial dimension. "This book critically analyses the concept of endurance from different theoretical, conceptual, methodological and empirical perspectives. The first part of the book takes a closer look at endurance, by examining how it relates to concepts such as resilience, perseverance, and perdurance. By analysing how these concepts overlap but differ, we reach a better understanding of what constitutes endurance. Furthermore, endurance is reconfigured as a mundane aspect of everyday life. In this paper, results from a study on the use of improved coffee production technology schemes among smallholder coffee producers in three prominent coffee producing regions in Honduras are presented. The impact of various schemes (trajectories) in which different agents influence the producers' decision to use new technologies was analyzed. In particular, there are differences in the influence of a) private coffee buying organizations and b) government and public development agencies on the innovation behavior of coffee growers. Drawing from network data that depict the internal and outbound connectedness of producers in three village communities in main coffee producing zones in Honduras, tools of social network analysis were applied to find out how interactions with certain agents, separately and cumulatively, has influenced their use of improved methods in coffee production and marketing. The results suggest that there are significant differences in the way that various providers of knowledge and technology, especially private buyers and development agencies, influence the farmers' behavior towards innovation. The influence of buyers, according to the data, is focused on certification and quality aspects, whereas development agents focus on improved agronomic practices. Farmers who communicate with the extension branch of input providers tend to be more innovative. These results suggest that development programs should take more seriously into account the role of private actors in innovation among agricultural producers and, hence, design development programs in such a way to allow for collaboration with these agents.

He claims that the irreversibility of the globalization process is no longer taken for granted as in the enthusiastic literature on the subject during the 1990's. The globalization is no longer regarded as an untouchable structure, and for over a decade now, we are witnessing an overall questioning of the globalization process itself. Therefore, the author pays special attention to the theoretical works of Justin Rosenberg who claims that the age of globalization is over. For Rosenberg, the globalization was only an ideological construction supported by the so called globalization theory which has failed in all its aspects: as a general social theory, as a historical and sociological argument and as a basis for interpretation of actual events. As opposed to Rosebenrg, the author claims that globalization should be regarded as a 'metapolitical' concept with its semantic and political functions. Using the methodological assumptions of Reinhart Koselleck, the author shows that 'metapolitical' concepts reach their intellectual and political high point by accelerating history and by transcending the actual situation. After their revolutionary peak, they disappear or they change their meaning in order to refer to the 'new reality'. Based on the insights of Hannah Arendt, the author shows that globalization has lost its revolutionary potential, but also that the end of globalization theory would not necessarily follow. Along with the rapid development of industry and agriculture, growth of population, improvement of urbanization level, China has been confronted with increasingly serious deficiency and pollution of water resource. In order to deal with the challenge as well as reduce waste discharge, it is necessary to strengthen all the possible efforts in controlling water pollution. Therefore, the control and management of water pollution is of vital significance to the development of national economy and social society, which is worth doing research on academically and practically. Water pollution management, in a sense, results from the urbanization and cosmopolitanization process. In this aspect, the European countries have acquired a lot of successful experience in water pollution control, which provides plenty of useful knowledge and reference for China's ongoing efforts in water pollution control. This thesis, by taking a comparative analysis approach, looks into the European countries' experience of water pollution control, makes evaluations on their managerial strategies, system and methods.
