Switching between different identities, the example of Paul the Apostle
Prof Dr Felix K Maier, Professor for Ancient History at University of Zurich, uses the example of Paul the Apostle to illustrate switching between different identities. My history research project analyzes the dynamics of different identities in the Roman Empire from around 50-150 AD. This project seeks to understand the often-paradoxical dynamics of different identities in a multicultural empire and to stimulate a discussion about hidden aspects of social interactions that we still need to understand correctly. Although the Roman era is entirely different to our times, some critical questions relate to today's world, where social and political distinction mechanisms also lead to open or concealed conflicts.

Who am i? Multicultural identities in the Roman Empire
In this second installment for Open Access Government, Prof Dr Felix K Maier, Professor for Ancient History at University of Zurich, explores multicultural identities in the Roman Empire. His history research project analyzes the dynamics of different identities in the Roman Empire from around 50-150 AD. My project aims to discern the often-paradoxical dynamics of identities in a multicultural empire and stimulate a discussion about hidden aspects of social interactions that still need to be properly understood. Although the Roman era is entirely different to our times, some critical questions from the past relate to today's world in which mechanisms of social and political distinction also lead to open or concealed conflicts.

The article examines the state from the perspective of classical European and Russian social studies (jurisprudence, sociology, philosophy). Different approaches to understanding the state are shown, an original interpretation of the main elements of the state (people, territory, state power) is given, using the initial positions of classical social science. The people are considered in three aspects: as a biological phenomenon, cultural-historical and legal. With regard to the territory, it is noted that the main thing for the state is not the natural features, but the properties of the people. The theory of sovereignty is analyzed. It is argued that the classical approach is characterized by the position that not every state has sovereignty.

AbstractSocial science researchers tend to express left‐liberal political attitudes. The ideological skew might influence research evaluations, but empirical evidence is limited. We conducted a survey experiment where Norwegian researchers evaluated fictitious research on majority–minority relations. Within this field, social contact and conflict theories emphasize different aspects of majority–minority relations, where the former has a left‐liberal leaning in its assumptions and implications. We randomized the conclusion of the research they evaluated so that the research supported one of the two perspectives. Although the research designs are the same, those receiving the social contact conclusion evaluate the quality and relevance of the design more favorably. We do not find similar differences in evaluations of a study on a nonpoliticized topic.

One of the key aspects of human quality of life is the sense of security. It has a social dimension, as the inhabitants of cities and towns feel safer when they can meet their social needs, are not at risk of poverty, homelessness, high risk of job loss, and they are provided with basic support in the senior period and during illness. The article will carry out a multifaceted analysis of the sense of socio-economic security of the inhabitants of sixty-six cities. The analysis will use indicators from public statistics, which will allow to create the Index of City Openness and Safety. The group indicators included in the Index will focus on public, communication and socio-economic security.

The process of nation- and state-building in Israel could be viewed as unique because of its pace and intensive character. This is evident in much that is related to immigration, forging cultural coherence, the establishment of institutions, and the like. However, the extreme characteristics of its development also make Israel a valuable case study for a theoretical or comparative discussion because those conditions allow for a clear view of various social, cultural, and political aspects of nation-building. Therefore, using Israel as a case study can corroborate, refute, or challenge assumptions, patterns of analysis, or conceptions and terminologies in theories and models used in the humanities or the social sciences for understanding processes of nation-building.

"Group Development is one of the most important cornerstones of social life. It dictates how our work and social circles develop and influences the relationships in our lives, and in turn, these relationships dictate the levels of satisfaction we report in our lives. Teamwork is also important in our experiences as it is strongly related to group development and is linked with many aspects, such as professionalism and efficiency in teams. In this paper, we discuss the importance of group development for any forming teams and analyze the concept within nine models (Bass and Ryterband, Tubb, Cog's Ladder, Homan, Woodcock, Fisher, Jones, Tuckman and Wheelan), with a particular accent on the last two (Tuckman and Wheelan).

AbstractThe years 1945–55 were a period of reconstruction for Italy; the following decade was one of economic growth. An aspect of this transition is analysed here, in relation to the forms of social integration created in working-class neighbourhoods. The case-study focuses on Milan, and the two organizations studied are the consulte popolari (the 'people's councils'), created by the left in the immediate post-war period, and the 'social centres' created in the mid-1950s by the IACP (the Autonomous Institute of Public Housing). Both were attempts to involve the new, outlying suburbs in the city's political life, each of them trying to adapt to different political phases. Both, I would like to suggest, succeeded in achieving certain results.

The research objective was to implement appropriate data mining techniques in the analysis of a social enterprise, considering the question: what are the most appropriate classification models to evaluate the productivity and personal growth of the entrepreneurs of Association las Rosas? Considering social learning related to business growth and personal development. A survey based in systematized information on the characterization of the business and personal development of the sample was taken as a basis; The first model made it possible to establish that productivity was determined by aspects such as the amount of debts that finance the undertakings, as well as the type of financing thereof. The second model established that female entrepreneurs perceive their personal growth and development will take place in the long term.

Governments and civil society are increasingly aware that the decarbonization of energy systems needs to be aligned with justice principles of recognition, distribution, and process. This paper establishes a conceptual linkage between "sustainable development", "low‐carbon energy transitions" and "energy justice" and examines social priorities to address peoples' competing priorities associated with low‐carbon energy interventions. By analyzing a renewable energy project in Vietnam as a case study, the paper shows that linking social priorities to energy justice provides a useful contribution for energy policy makers toward a better understanding of the multidimensional and complex aspects of low‐carbon energy transitions, and how different segments of society prioritize and perceive them for the achievement of socially just energy decisions.

Mining companies increasingly adopt trusts, foundations, and funds as part of their efforts to obtain and maintain a social license to operate and corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies for community development. Using qualitative methodology, this article examined host communities' perceptions of two mining company-financed trust funds in Ghana. The interviews revealed that although the community members considered some aspects of the trust funds positively, the trust funds' overall objectives to promote meaningful participation of local community members and contribute to local development had not been met. Inadequate planning and needs assessments, and inflexibility in externally framed CSR practices that were unfavorable to the operational contexts, were among the key factors undermining the success of the trust funds.

AbstractJean-Jacques Rousseau is well known for his love of the ancients. His use of examples from Sparta and republican Rome emphasized what he found lacking in modern times. This article attempts to establish how Rousseau's views on the ancients are related to his religious-political thought, particularly as it relates to his description of citizen religion in the last chapter of the Social Contract. While Rousseau admired many aspects of citizen religion, he rejects it for two reasons: reasons of humanity in the Geneva Manuscript and reasons of self-interest in the Social Contract. This article attempts to understand how the two can be reconciled through the view of citizen religion's contribution to patriotism and fanaticism.

AbstractCharles Bennet, 2nd Baron Ossulston is largely known through his diary of his daily social encounters, which was first analysed for its political import by Clyve Jones. A further set of documents in the Bennet family papers deepens our understanding of Ossulston's life and his social milieu among the aristocracy under Queen Anne. The love letters sent to him from a Mrs Sarah Sidney throughout 1710 reveal much about life in the aristocratic hothouse of St James's Square. They also show how the 'ministerial revolution' of that year was seen by two politically conversant figures at the margins of the royal court. This relationship was long‐lasting and has been a hitherto unknown aspect of Ossulston's life, which may help explain some of his attitudes.
