This article examines the different theories of meeting offered by Durkheim, Mauss, Sartre, Lévi-Strauss, Bohm, Levinas and Buber. Through this examination we question the common assumption that social life, and more particularly the gift, is based on exchange — on the sequence of giving, receiving and reciprocating — which is fundamentally a Hegelian logic of subjects and objects. While many aspects of social life take this form, true meeting is characterized by a quality of grace; it occurs only when the Hegelian world gives way to a presence that has a different temporality, spatiality and ontology. This world is glimpsed, but inadequately conceptualized, in Durkheim s theory of religious congregation, which is characterized by a tension between identity and relational logics.

This paper discusses the influence of recent health care reform acts in Germany on choice, guidance and access from the perspective of patients, insured, insurers, and health care providers. Particular emphasis is put on health policy reforms since 2004, i.e. the Social Health Insurance Modernization Act 2004 and the most recent Social Health Insurance Competition Strengthening Act 2007. Various aspects of the reforms are included as long as they have an influence on access, choice, and choice to health care in Germany. ; Dieser Beitrag diskutiert den Einfluss vergangener gesundheitspolitischer Reformgesetze in Deutschland auf Wahl- und Wechselmöglichkeiten, Steuerung und Zugang aus der Sicht von Patienten, Versicherten, Versicherungen und Leistungsanbietern. Este artículo analiza diferentes puntos de vista y opiniones sociales y políticas generadas sobre la reforma del Estatuto de Autonomía de Cataluña (España) en 2006. En él se tratan las cuestiones más críticas del mismo, como el pulso entre los modelos de Estado uninacional y plurinacional en España y cuestiones económicas y relativas al principio de solidaridad interterritorial afectadas, entre otros temas. ; This article analyses an array of different social and political views regarding the reform of Catalonia's Statute of Autonomy in 2006. It deals with a number of keyissues as i.e. the confrontation between the single-nation and the multinational State models in Spain, the inter-territorial solidarity principle and related aspect of economic character among others.

Based on case study analysis of four picketing organizations in Argentina, this article analyzes the impact of women's participation in the picketing movements, on the ways in which women think about themselves and the social roles they claim. Women's initial involvement in the picketing movements was tied closely to their performance of the traditional roles of mother and wife. Over time, and as a result of women's social participation, these roles acquired new meaning. Women began to reject certain stereotypes linked to the feminine, and to challenge some aspects of the gendered division of tasks and responsibilities. Redefinition of feminine roles, however, has limitations, which are evident through analysis of the unequal participation of women in the movements' leadership.

This article develops Hochschild's (1975, 1979, 1983) notion of emotion and emotion management/emotional labour through a critical analysis of her 'new social theory of emotion' as laid out in Appendix A of The Managed Heart (1983). The article suggests that Hochschild's theory conceptually limits the interactive, relational nature of emotion (Burkitt, 1997, 2002) and prioritizes external social factors at the expense of unconscious ones. Drawing on empirical research (including 14 months of participant observation, audio diaries and semi-structured interviews) examining emotion and emotional labour among nurses, I develop Hochschild's theory to include both its relational and unconscious aspects. This article attempts to begin the process of recovering emotion by identifying hidden unconscious emotion processes from its management.

The issue of the policy of multiculturalism toward ethno-cultural minorities in contemporary Serbia has been reviewed within the project Regional and European Aspects of Integrative Processes in Serbia held by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory. The aim of this paper is directed toward examination of theoretical and empirical problems regarding the phenomenon of multiculturalism. In spite of the fact that multiculturalism is one of the striking characteristics of modern life in Serbia our social sciences pay a little attention to this topic. Ethnicity as an important part of multicultural discourse is based on nonscientific knowledge and in this manner it presents basis for policy and practice for the protection of rights of minorities in the country.

Citizenship is an increasingly important focus in political and social theory, as well as in philosophy, legal studies, and some of the humanities. It is also a vital concern in the lives of many "real people." It figures in the assurance or denial of rights, economic benefits and social services, education, due process of law, and opportunities to affect political decisions; but it does not guarantee equality, fairness, justice, economic well-being, dignity, or the respect of public officials or fellow citizens. We need to engage theoretical and normative aspects of citizenship when considering such topics as democracy and democratization, civil liberties, political participation, migration and asylum, nationality, culture, persistent inequalities, discrimination, identity and belonging, gender equity, race and ethnic relations, human rights, and globalization.

During the postwar era, extensive changes in family structure and gender roles have occurred in Western countries. The aim for this study was to see if processes of change and convergence in gender roles have led to new drinking patterns among Swedish women. Data were collected from a survey conducted in 1979 and replicated in 2003. For this study, data on aspects of drinking patterns and problems were combined with demographics and indicators of social situation. For one of the drinking pattern indicators, the assumption of convergence between the sexes was confirmed. Generally, though, differences in drinking patterns are at hand among both women and men in the same direction. Also, social background factors and demographics have weaker explanatory power today compared to the late 1970s.

Under the term "Hilfe zur Arbeit" (aid for work) the federal law of social welfare subsumes all kinds of labour disciplining instruments. First, the paper shows the historical connection of welfare and labour disciplining mechanisms in the context of different periods within capitalist development. In a second step, against the background of historical experiences, we will analyse the trends of "Hilfe zur Arbeit" during the past two decades. It will be shown that by the rise of unemployment, the impact of labour disciplining aspects of "Hilfe zur Arbeit" has increased both on the federal and on the municipal level. For this reason the leverage of the liberal paradigm would take place even in the core of social rights. (Prokla / FUB)

A Korowai mother‐in‐law and son‐in‐law avoid seeing and touching each other, sharing food, speaking of each other in the singular, and uttering each other's names. I argue that these different avoided actions are understood as analogous forms of contact and impingement, and that the avoidances embody a qualitatively distinctive vision of social existence, according to which separateness, obligation, and uncertainty can be conjoined as positive bases of social connection. Avoidance practices epitomize and shape the broader institutional character of affinity as a relation of contingent accommodation and obligation. Korowai register these aspects of avoidance practice explicitly in their ideas about the consequences of transgression, and in their creative adjustment of the degrees of avoidance that they uphold.

We surveyed 527 nonmetropolitan gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender people (GLBT) and inductively analyzed their responses to open‐ended questions regarding the "best" and "worst" aspects of being GLBT in that area, and how to improve their lives as rural GLBT people. Field observations supplemented the qualitative data. "Best things" included close relationships, high quality of life, involvement with GLBT social networks or organizations, and self‐acceptance. "Worst things" included weak and fragmented GLBT resources, living within a homophobic social climate, and lacking equal rights. Suggested improvements included pursuing civil rights, fostering a supportive climate, and strengthening personal relationships. Ways that family professionals can develop commitment to GLBT people, enhance existing services, and advocate for political change are discussed.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a group of social scientists at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) gathered to consider how they might employ their talents to help the country after the shocking events of that morning. The group included economists, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, demographers, and survey methodologists. Based upon their previous research experience, each of them proposed hypotheses on aspects of American life and individuals' morale and behavior that were most likely to be affected. While they were relatively confident about expected relationships in the short term, we were uncertain about how temporary or permanent these changes might be or how intertwined and mutually reinforcing they could become.

Six theory types on the moral worth of nations & nationalism, five that suggest worth & one that suggests absence of worth, are found unworkable in some aspect. These theories are known as the "dark side," remedial right, dysfunctionalist, social trust, self-esteem, & "context of choice" theories. Based on their individual difficulties, a fully workable moral account of nationalism is constructed, based on the need for complexity-reduction in everyday, with select, adaptive, & shared frames of reference for ideas & information. The theory treats the conditions under which nationalism is legitimate, the special group status of nations, adaptive capacity, the basis for social trust & boundary-setting, a process for dealing with individualized claims, & a recognition of both collective & individual dimensions of autonomy. In the last decade, the "religious impulse" has become an increas-ingly important aspect of the party coalitions as Republican and Demo-cratic identifiers have become increasingly distinct in terms of their re-ligiosity and religious practice. The paper traces the increasing impor-tance of religiosity and social class as correlates of party identification and argues that the contemporary GOP has a support base that is highly similar to that of conventional Christian Democratic parties. It further suggests that the pattern of issue politics between the parties today is a result of this new cleavage structure.
