With the dawn of the 21st century, catastrophic crises such as the 2007-2008 Financial Crisis, the 2010 BP Oil Spill, and the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster produced social, economic, and environmental effects that reverberated across the globe as people lost life savings and the eco-systems upon which their livelihoods depended. I sought to understand why government and industry crises managers failed to address underlying conditions giving rise to each crisis, particularly because risks had been well mapped by experts prior to each disaster. Accordingly, I adopted governmentality as a framework for mapping how specific strategies, technologies, and communications make crises inevitable, despite considerable expert forewarnings. Governmentality bridges micro and macro analyses, linking everyday practices and operations to social "logics of conduct" shaping institutions and circulating across global society. Governmentality allowed me to analyze, compare, and contrast each crisis, looking for similarities and differences in codes of conduct across disasters.

This book demonstrates, from a historical and an economic point of view, how the female contribution has been so determinant in the success of our species, and how it is linked to male dominance. Male hunting and female gathering were the two forces of production during 99% of the life of mankind on Earth. Ethnographic evidence shows that female gathering is more productive and less time-consuming than male hunting. Therefore, the prehistoric communities of Homo sapiens could manage their social labor-time in the most productive way, only if women lent their time to men through the supply of basic energy: a debt that men incurred since the dawn of history, but never acknowledged. It is time now to give the gender economic relations the crucial place they deserve in a theory of human cooperation and sociality, without forgetting that it is necessarily a theory of social inequality.

Hyper-active governance is a new way of thinking about governing that puts debates over expertise at the heart. Contemporary governing requires delegation to experts, but also increases demands for political accountability. In this context, politicians and experts work together under political stress to adopt different governing relationships that appear more 'hands-off' or 'hands-on'. These approaches often serve to displace profound social and economic crises. Only a genuinely collaborative approach to governing, with an inclusive approach to expertise, can create democratically legitimate and effective governance in our accelerating world. Using detailed case studies and global datasets in various policy areas including medicines, flooding, water resources, central banking and electoral administration, the book develops a new typology of modes of governing. Drawing from innovative social theory, it breathes new life into debates about expert forms of governance and how to achieve real paradigm shifts in how we govern our increasingly hyper-active world.

Measurement and analysis are integral components of network research. As a result, there is a critical need for all sorts of statistics for network analysis, ranging from applications to methodology and theory. Networks have permeated everyday life through everyday realities like the Internet, social networks, and viral marketing, and as such, network analysis is an important growth area in the quantitative sciences. Their roots are in social network analysis going back to the 1930s and graph theory going back centuries.
