"How do people manage when they are excluded from care for themselves and their families? Drawing on eighty-five interviews with low-income, Latinx immigrants, the author explores if and how immigrants access the resources they need. The book develops the concept of conditional care to describe a safety net riddled with exclusion and exceptions based on notions of who does or does not deserve care. The chapters reveal how conditional care based on immigration policy, place, and gendered roles affects immigrants' everyday lives. Through an exploration of specific barriers, and tactics by which people gain access to services and navigate this system, the author suggests strategies by which providers and policy makers could work toward a more inclusive safety net of unconditional care."

The main goal of this Element is to provide a psychological explanation for why actual global climate policy is so much at odds with the prescriptions of most neoclassical economists. To be sure, the behavioral approach does focus on why neoclassical models are often psychologically unrealistic. However, in this Element the author argues that the unrealistic elements are minor compared to the psychological pitfalls driving politically determined climate policy. Why this is the case is what the author describes as 'the big behavioral question.' More precisely, the big behavioral question asks why there is a huge gap between actual policy and even the weakest of the prescriptions in the range of plausible prescriptions coming from neoclassical economists' integrated assessment models. Caste, Knowledge, and Power investigates the transformations of caste practices in twentieth century India and the role of knowledge in this transformation and in the continuing of these oppressive practices. The author situates the domination and subordination in the domain of knowledge production in India not just in the emergence of colonial modernity but in the formation of colonial-Brahminical modernity. It engages less with the marginalization of the oppressed castes in the modern institutions of knowledge production which has already been discussed widely in the scholarship. Rather, the author focuses on how the modern colonial-Brahminical concept of knowledge invalidated many other forms of knowing practices and how historically caste domination transformed from the claims of superiority in acharam (ritual hierarchy) to the claims of superiority in possession of knowledge.

Moving away from portrayals of East African childhood as characterized by want, the author argues for a differentiated and pluralist nature of the eastern African childhood. Taking a chronological approach, the author provides a critical reading of Africanist anthropological research on childhood in eastern Africa before examining writings from the pre-imperial and colonial periods. Moving into the contemporary period, the book reveals the continuity of these portrayals in humanitarian and journalistic discourses, before exploring postcolonial writings on childhood in works by Eastern African novelists. Employing a multidisciplinary perspective, this book will be of interest to scholars of African literature, East African history, critical childhood studies and Africanist epistemologies"--

This book, based on anthropological research carried out by the author between 2008 and 2016, addresses the spatial features of nomadic pastoralism among the Mongol herders of Mongolia and Southern Siberia from a cross-comparative perspective. In addition to classical methods of survey, Charlotte Marchina innovatively used GPS recordings to analyse the ways in which pastoralists envision and concretely occupy the landscape, which they share with their animals and invisible entities. The data, represented in abundant and original cartography, provides a better understanding of the mutual adaptations of both herders and animals in the common use of unfenced pastures, not only between different herders but also between different species. The author also highlights the herders' adaptive strategies at a time of rapid socio-political and environmental changes in these areas of the world.

The Green Revolution resulted in spectacular advancements in Indian agriculture. Having achieved food security for its citizens, the country has now become a net exporter of different agricultural commodities. But sadly, this does not reflect the real state of the Indian agricultural sector. In truth, our farmers are plagued by crop failures, poor income, and indebtedness. Such is their misery that they are of late driven to commit suicide. The author identifies poor returns from crop cultivation as the root cause of farmers' problems. Using vast temporal and spatial data, the author explores further and attempts to address some very pertinent questions facing Indian agriculture today. The answers will help us determine if we can double farm income by 2022-3, a target set by the present union government.

In the nineteenth century, state policy towards prostitution was primarily shaped by an assessment of its role in spreading venereal diseases. In this book, the author traces normative and organisational efforts of the authorities of the Kingdom of Poland, which sought to maintain control over prostitution and the health of women who offered paid sexual services. The author uses data collected by the police and medical authorities supervising legal and illegal prostitution to provide a demographic and sociological picture of the big-city and small-town market of sexual commerce. It was only in the early twentieth century when prostitution became an important subject of the Polish public debate, a process which is described in the book against the backdrop of the major issues and fears of the epoch.

What can war tell us about empire? 'Climate of Conquest' is built around this question. Here the author eschews the conventional way of writing about warfare primarily in terms of battles and technologies. Instead, he unravels the deep connections that Mughal war-making shared with the broader dynamics of society, culture, and politics. In the process, he offers a new analysis of the Mughal empire from the vantage point of war. 'Climate of Conquest' closely studies the dynamics of the military campaigns that helped the Mughals conquer North India and project their power beyond it. The author argues that these campaigns unfolded in constant negotiation with the diverse natural environment of South Asia. The empire sought to discipline the environment and harness its resources to satisfy its own military needs.
