Volker Heins zeigt, dass Mauern und Abschottung kein Garant für Wohlstand und Sicherheit sind, sondern eine Gefahr für die Demokratie. Anders als andere Experten beschreibt er die weltweiten Wanderungsbewegungen nicht nur aus der Perspektive der Regierungen, sondern auch aus der Perspektive von Migranten. Mehr noch: Er geht unserem Bedürfnis nach Grenzen und Abgrenzung auf den Grund. Sein Plädoyer für eine realistische Politik der allmählichen Öffnung aller Staatsgrenzen macht deutlich, dass globale Bewegungsfreiheit für den Bestand einer stabilen und gerechten Weltordnung unverzichtbar ist. Dieses Buch zeigt, welche Voraussetzungen dazu notwendig sind und wie in Zukunft unser Zusammenleben neu und besser gelingen kann - über alle Grenzen hinweg. "Heins weist auf die Milliardensummen hin, die ausgegeben werden, um Armuts- und Kriegsmigration zu unterbinden. Er benennt das massenhafte Leid, das die Grenzregimes der Gegenwart produzieren, die "immer mehr zu Todesstreifen und militärischen Einsatzgebieten werden". Er schreibt: "Von Anfang 1996 bis März 2020 sind mindestens 75.000 Menschen bei dem Versuch, in ein anderes Land zu gelangen, qualvoll ums Leben gekommen, im Mittelmeer ertrunken oder in Wüsten verdurstet. Die Dunkelziffer ist höher." Wer das normal und gerecht finde, konstatiert Heins, könne nicht gleichzeitig das Hohelied auf die Prinzipien der Demokratie und der Menschenrechte singen" (deutschlandfunkkultur.de)
