Der Artikel analysiert den Zusammenhang zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum, Produktivität und Arbeitslosigkeit. Schwerpunktmäßig wird dabei das Konstrukt der natürlichen Arbeitslosigkeit unter Gleichgewichtsbedingungen behandelt. Arbeitslosigkeit wird insbesondere aus dem Zusammenwirken von Leistungen der Arbeitslosenversicherung mit anderen Aspekten des Wohlfahrtsstaates wie Gewerkschaftsmacht, Arbeitsschutzgesetze und hoher Steuerbelastung zur Finanzierung des Sozialstandards erklärt. Abschließend wird auf wirtschaftspolitische Konsequenzen eingegangen, die insgesamt auf eine stärkere Liberalisierung der Wirtschaft hinauslaufen. (IAB)

If capital, nonland natural resources, & know-how are all available at a going international price, then the activity in a nation is governed by the productivity of its people (as set by the profit opportunities from employing them in their best use, combining them with the necessary other traded inputs), interacting with their willingness to work at different wages. Here, official evidence on labor supply & productivity growth is reviewed, drawing on European &, in particular, UK experience. It is concluded that liberalization rather than corporatism is a policy strategy likely to generate growth. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 29 References. AA
