Law touches every aspect of our daily lives, and yet the main concepts, terms, and processes of the legal system remain obscure to many. This Very Short Introduction provides a clear, jargon-free account of modern legal systems, explaining how the law works both in the Western tradition and around the world. - ;Law underlies our society - it protects our rights, imposes duties on each of us, and establishes a framework for the conduct of almost every social, political, and economic activity. The punishment of crime, compensation of the injured, and the enforcement of contracts are merely some

This comprehensive collection of essays provides a full account of the complexities of sex and gender as they relate to HIV/AIDS, in Ghana specifically and in Africa more generally. They offer perspectives from various disciplines and fields of study including anthropology, demography, history, literature, public health and sociology. The contributions stress the urgency of the pandemic and its threat to the existence of the African State. They further illustrate how aspects such as gender roles, social transformation, poverty, mobility, communication, changing cultural norms, cultural anxieties and exploitation are all interwoven in this multifaceted disease, and its various ramifications.

The author tries to assess how arms control and disarmament are both affected by and contribute to wider conditions of international peace and security. He begins with a general assessment of arms control and disarmament with a historical analysis on arms control and disarmament proposals culminating into the roles of superpowers, UN and Africa with specific reference to its adverse effect to social and economic impact to Africa. The second part looks into the sub-regional aspects of arms control and disarmament with recognition to the civil society and the NGOs. This book offers an interpretation of the work of Theodor Adorno. In contrast to the conventional view that Adorno's is in essence a critical philosophy, Yvonne Sherratt traces systematically a utopian thesis that pervades all the major aspects of Adorno's thought. She places Adorno's work in the context of German Idealist and later Marxist and Freudian traditions, and then analyses his key works to show how the aesthetic, epistemological, psychological, historical and sociological thought interconnect to form a utopian image. The book will be eagerly sought out by students and specialists in philosophy, social and political theory, intellectual history, literary theory and cultural studies

"This new Seminar Study presents a full, succinct and balanced overview of the policies and impact of the Thatcher Governments from 1979 to 1990. Within a chronological framework, the authors analyse the many controversial episodes and aspects of Margaret Thatcher's premiership, including the Falklands War; the miners' strike; Britain's relationship with the USA and the stationing of missiles at Greenham Common; the bitter relationship with Europe and the ill-fated poll tax. In addition, there is a chapter discussing the impact that her policies had on Britain's social and economic landscape and on the British people at large."--Jacket
This book employs a Marxist framework to analyse aspects of Ghanaian politics during the 1966-81 period. Its central claim is that the present Ghanaian social formation which is dominated by foreign capital through the domestic bourgeois and petit-bourgeois classes is incapable of transforming itself into an independent autonomous system. Hence, it is characterised by recurring political and economic crises. Industrial strikes and other forms of struggle by the lower classes are responses to the deprivations which they suffer as a result of these crises, and constitute attempts to reject the rule of the country's ruling classes. "This book examines the COVID-19 pandemic through socioeconomic lens that draw on history, approaches to state-market relations, and public policy perspectives In 2020, the world experienced the worst pandemic since the outbreak of the Spanish Flu of 1918, which continues to have far[1]reaching implications for the global economy and triggered macro-economic dislocations that severely affected the most vulnerable countries and segments of society. This book was conceived as a response to the disruptive shifts induced by the pandemic, with a particular focus on South Africa. International experience has shown that countries and societies that have gone through tough economic times, either as a consequence of wars or economic depressions, have responded to crises by enacting unpopular policy measures based on difficult tradeoffs, which often made way for innovation. The authors outline policy responses to the COVID-19 crisis and propose several interventions to mitigate its effects. These include developing innovative approaches to fiscal and monetary policies, labour market policies, industrial policies, as well as social policies. Building state capabilities, improving the governance and performance of state institutions, and managing digital change are some of the clear policy interventions that are laid out in this book. The article presents the marital union from the perspectives of canonical law and secular law, two distinct legal systems. It focuses on a comparative analysis of the theoretical and practical aspects related to marriage, taking into account the influence of faith and societal norms on its regulations. Through an in-depth examination of these two legal systems, the paper aims to better understand both the complexities and similarities between them and to identify areas of conflict or synergy. It aims to provide a comprehensive view of the essence and functioning of the marital union, considering both its spiritual and social dimensions.
Abstract Information communication technology (ICT) policy developed to counteract efforts from networked authoritarian regimes to control the information environment must be informed by the information control techniques and strategies that those regimes have at their disposal. This article informs policymakers through the development of a Contested Information Environment Framework that outlines both individual information control techniques and overarching strategies employed by authoritarian regimes. The framework in this article was methodically built through an analysis of the discourse surrounding the efforts of authoritarian state actors to manipulate international and regional social groups by controlling or influencing aspects of information exchanges.
Words matter, especially in times of crisis. This article analyses the complexities of political discourse on vulnerability by considering the case of the Dutch COVID-19 response. Our study finds that the framing of vulnerability as a predetermined and naturalised condition, linked to old age and pre-existing medical conditions, draws attention away from aspects of precarisation tied to economic position, social class, cultural background and living conditions. This rhetorical strategy can be understood as a practice of de-responsibilisation through which attention is rhetorically diverted from the way(s) in which political authorities are implicated in producing, exacerbating or failing to mitigate vulnerabilities.
Abstract: This article explores the nuanced views of lower-ranking Chinese officials about religious activities. Utilising list experiments, it overcomes the difficulty of obtaining genuine opinions on religious affairs from officials, who often face political constraints and toe the Party line. Findings show that officials are concerned mainly about the organisational aspects of religious groups rather than merely the growth of these groups. They also demonstrate sophisticated views on religious ideologies, evident in their differing concerns for Taoism and Protestantism. Social desirability bias is then discovered among these officials who exaggerate their worries about Taoism and downplay those for Protestantism, creating an illusion of religious freedom.
Cognitive warfare is a new phenomenon that differs from any forms of action previously used in the information space aiming to affect the thinking of target groups. The main difference consists in the targeted and sophisticated use of scientific knowledge from neuroscience, with special attention on consciousness and perception of reality. This deeper understanding of how the human mind works has impacted distributed narratives and the choice of the most suitable technological platforms for their distribution to the target audience. This article presents a conceptual classification of cognitive warfare and defines its three core segments: neuroscience, technology and aspects of social science.
