Many scholars have asked themselves if and for how long they should use the concept of "post-socialism." We review some ways in which post-socialism is no longer used productively and suggest that one way to analyze the enduring effects of socialism (a useful role for the concept of post-socialism) is by paying attention to how economic and political elites in Central and Eastern Europe continue to use the ghost of state-socialism as the ultimate boogeyman, disciplinary device, and "ideological antioxidant." We call this blend of post-1989 anti-communism and neoliberal hegemony "zombie socialism," and we argue that it is a key component of contemporary capitalism in Central and Eastern Europe. We illustrate briefly some cases of zombie socialism, using data such as EU 28 statistics on labor, wages, work–life (im)balance, income tax, housing, and housing policies to show the effects of this hegemonic discourse. The presence of zombie socialism for almost three decades in Central and Eastern Europe made some of these countries "more" capitalist than countries with longer capitalist traditions in Europe. We join others who have suggested that there is nothing to transition any longer, as the "transition" is long over.

Slavery is a form of employing a person and putting him/her under the control of another. Such control includes restriction, use of physical energy or perhaps even his/her mind without compensation such as a decent wage or other forms of respect. Slavery does not always appear in the form of physical pressure, but it can also be in the psychological form by demanding someone to do something for the interests of another due to power, indebtedness or religious texts. Traces of slavery in the course of human history, in fact, have been found since ancient times in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Europe or Arabia. It can also be found in the practice of Abrahamic religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. So it is undeniable that slavery is not a novelty and will always appear in the historical journey of human life with a variety of forms. The Islam religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), as one of the Abrahamic religions is basically against slavery. It can be seen from the history and from its teachings against the practice of slavery. Islam also strongly advocates respect for the rights of a slave especially for labor. Therefore, all forms and manifestation of slavery, including in the field of education must be resolved immediately.

The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) opened its doors in 1850. Since that time it has become renowned for numerous alumni who have made an impact in the world. Although some are well known, others have played a role that most people are unaware of. Here we will highlight the diverse individuals and their achievements. The contents of this poster were searched for and recovered from: the Bentley Historical Library, the archives of the University of Michigan; the University of Michigan Medical School's Center for the History of Medicine whose primary objective is to foster a broader understanding and deeper appreciation of the pioneering role of the University of Michigan, its alumni, and Michigan as a state in advancing knowledge of disease and promoting human health.Through our research, we have been able to highlight several well-known and lesser-known University of Michigan alumni who have had an impact on various areas of life, both medical and political. In addition, some of them have conquered barriers of ethnicity and gender. This report discusses ideas of a radical increase in the significance and scope of culture in modern society, where industrialism is said to have been superseded by a society of information, knowledge and experiences. Issues of cultural identity and community are increasingly focal concerns, the virtual worlds of media culture seem omnipotent, and the cultural sector is growing with each of its recurrent redefinitions. Politics and the economy are supposedly aestheticised, culture and design boost regional development, creativity is a core value. The theses of revolutionary -culturalisation- of society and everyday life have a long history through the various cultural turns proclaimed by scholars as well as in society at large. The report scrutinises some main arguments and their implications, pointing at a need to distinguish historical trends, material processes and ideological discourses. A differentiation is made between five main dimensions of the concept of culture that are associated with specific sets of culturalisation ideas and corresponding trans-formations of boundaries around and within the cultural field. This discussion also touches upon the position and role of cultural research itself. Examples are given from five focal areas for these processes: academic work, regional politics, public spaces, history constructions and border struggles.

This article attempts to explain why some countries experience civil wars while others do not. It argues that renewed war is likely to have less to do with the attributes of a previous war, as many people have argued, than with current incentives individual citizens have to rejoin a rebel group. Civil wars will have little chance to get off the ground unless individual farmers, shopkeepers, and potential workers choose to enlist in the rebel armies that are necessary to pursue a war, and enlistment is only likely to be attractive when two conditions hold. The first is a situation of individual hardship or severe dissatisfaction with one's current situation. The second is the absence of any nonviolent means for change. An analysis of all civil wars ending between 1945 and 1996 suggests that a higher quality of life and greater access to political participation have a significant negative effect on the likelihood of renewed war. Countries that provide higher levels of economic well-being to their citizenry and create an open political system are less likely to experience multiple civil wars regardless of what happened in a previous conflict.

La presente investigación pretende contribuir a la discusión sobre Estado, política e ilegalidad. Con base en el estudio de caso de un departamento colombiano de la Amazonía occidental — Putumayo—, la investigación se pregunta por los efectos de la economía cocalera en la configuración local del Estado, en la política y en la articulación del territorio y sus habitantes con la sociedad nacional. Estas preguntas tienen implicaciones para la comprensión del tipo de ciudadanía que se construye en contextos de ilegalidad, así como para la conceptualización de los impactos de la coca en los diferentes órdenes políticos que se configuran en el país. / Abstract. This text focuses on Putumayo, a department in Colombia's Amazon, a recently settled area with a regional economy that for the past three decades has revolved around illegal crops (1978-2008). It examines how the coca economy affects politics, local state-building, and the way the region ties in with national political life. It explores the role of the coca economy in local state-building in Putumayo. What kind of politics is encouraged in a place where the economy has revolved around illegal crops for three decades? Space is a product of society. Driven by industrialization, urbanization, informatization and government policies, China's rural space is undergoing drastic reconstruction. As one of the core contents of international rural geography research, rural space research are multi-disciplinary, multi perspective, multi-dimensional and multi-method, forming a rich research field. In order to comprehensively grasp the progress of rural space research abroad, this study reviewed international rural space research literature in recent 40 years. The study found that foreign scholars described the connotation of rural space from the aspects of material, imagination and practice, emphasize the importance of daily life practice. It introduced living space to construct a more systematic research framework of rural space by establishing a "three-fold model of rural space". With regard to the theoretical perspective, international research on rural space has experienced three stages: functionalism, political economics and social constructivism. In the evolution of time, it has realized the transformation from productivism to post-productivism; in the spatial dimension, it realizes the multiple superposition of settlement space, economic space, social space and cultural space. As a whole, international research on rural space has realized the transformation from material level to social representation, from objective space to subjective space, and from static one-dimensional space to dynamic multi-dimensional space, which enlightens us on the importance of interdisciplinary research and "social cultural" research on rural space. The construction of rural space in China needs to pay attention to the subject status of farmers and multifunction of rural space, respect the role of locality and difference of various places, and recover the function of production of meaning of rural space.

With the arrival of graphic revolution, it has become increasingly impossible to draw the lines between personal and political, private and market. Television, social media and their imitative versions of newspapers have become dependent more on selling the images, literally and metaphorically to negate the pressure of public opinion in public sphere. Media as a social institution, serve the purpose of legitimizing the efforts of hegemony construction by different other social and religious institutions and in the process get involved in producing 'metalanguage'. The efforts of media to turn everyone into celebrity enjoy the advantage of drawing public attention to farcical and construct an air of simplicity and ease. The emergence of celebrities with the help of pseudo-events in our social world has been able to foster a culture of consumption and leisure. Newspapers, supposedly a more sober and less instantaneous medium are also forced to follow the business rules set by the visual media. The intrinsic difference between a celebrity and a star happens to be one that a celebrity is in most cases incapable of becoming a star, which requires a certain amount of qualities. With the boundary between public and private closing down, the celebrities are in control of public imagination. Their existence in public life has been internalized giving birth to new kind of political discourses. The discursive elements of celebrity discourse are capable of giving birth to a new kind of 'metalaguage' also. The article looks into the construction of a celebrity in the pages of India's most famous English newspapers and tries to analyze how these discursive elements are giving birth to new possibilities of a narcotizing dysfunction or collective amnesia.

Studies conducted early in the era of combined antiretroviral therapy provided evidence of a deleterious effect of HIV disease on chances of maintain in and/or access to employment for people living with HIV (PlwHIV). However, major changes have occurred both in the field of HIV and more generally in the social context. Based on the VESPA-2003 and VESPA-2011 surveys, we show that the employment rate of PLWHIV remained stable between 2003 and 2011, while the inactivity rate decreased and unemployment rose. The comparison of labor market participation with the general population in 2003 and 2011 shows that all other things being equal, PLWHIV were persistently less in employment and more unemployed than the general population throughout the 2000s. Moreover, the disadvantage of PLWHIV on the labor market seems to be more marked for individuals diagnosed since 2008. We also show that the employment situation is heterogeneous across the various groups of PLWHIV, with immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa experiencing a particularly adverse situation. Analysis of the ANRS-PARCOURS survey shows a marked occupational downgrading mobility after arrival in France. However, HIV appears to have a limited role in these career paths, which seem to be essentially structured by the segmentation of the French labor market. "Book Abstract: The sociology of the Middle East has been an expanding field of inquiry since the aftermath of WWII when phenomena as diverse as urbanization, internal and international migration, and peasant societies attracted the attention of scholars working on the region. The Middle East became central in key sociological debates on modernization theory and the critical responses. The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of the Middle East connects this historical trajectory with the emergence of the sociology of Islam, inspired by Max Weber. It explores how within the global community, the Middle East has become a terrain of heightened concern within the post-Cold War context, where the promising rise of civic (and often religiously-inspired) sociopolitical movements in the 1980s and 1990s has been slowly overwhelmed by the affirmation of jihadist networks, authoritarian states, and complex supranational security apparatuses. This foundational volume starts by engaging in a critical examination of the field itself, starting with a historical sociology of the making of the idea itself of the Middle East and linking it with the legacy of colonialism and the evolving dynamics of global power. In repurposing the sociology of the Middle East within a growing interdisciplinary multifield, the Handbook develops the critical argument that the exploration of social dynamics in the Middle East cannot be disjoined from the analysis of culture and politics. By connecting the vexed state-society relations in the region with movements of transformation and the affirmation of rights and creativity in the public arenas, it provides a comprehensive perspective to investigate longstanding regional and new transregional and global dynamics and their impact on the life of people in the region.
