The sustainable use of soil requires a broad knowledge of its genesis, morphology, properties, and distribution in the landscape. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize the pedogenetic attributes of representative soils from the cerrado-caatinga transition of the Gurguéia river basin to indicate their agricultural potential and limitations for the implementation of agroforestry systems. National and international soil classification systems were used to define the soil classes. The limiting factors and agricultural potential were characterized following the evaluation system of the agricultural potential of Brazilian land. In general, profiles 1, 3, 5, and 6 had a low nutrient budget and a sandy to loam texture. Profiles 2, 4, and 7 showed high clay content and nutrient budget. The soil profiles were classified as Ustic Quartzipsamments, Udic Haplusterts, Xanthic Haplustox, Arenic Kanhaplustults, Typic Haplustox, and Aridic Dystrustept based on their pedogenetic characteristics. Udic Haplusterts and Arenic Kanhaplustults soils display restrictions regarding the planting of forests owing to oxygen and soil depth limitations. The other soil classes had adequate physical properties for the implementation of agricultural systems and pastures, including good drainage and medium texture; however, they had low natural fertility, and thus require technologies for soil acidity correction and fertilization. Ustic Quartzipsamments and Ustic soils require the implementation of conservation systems, such as agroforestry, to avoid degradation.

The national production of garlic that is currently under fluctuations and could not fullfill demand for garlic that led Governments to perform the import. Land extensification for garlic in East Java, Pujon district, Malang is expected to be the solution to increase production. However, restricted by the limitations of the information of land characteristics that remains unclear, it takes effort to find out the land characteristics for garlic in the subdistrict of Pujon. Research was carried out for gathering information of land characteristic and to analyze relationships between land characteristics and garlic production. This study was carried out using survey method include groundcheck, minipit observation, soil sampling, and interviews to the farmers. Then, post survey analysis activities include laboratory analysis, soil classification, and statistical data analysis to test the correlation between land characteristics with garlic production. Results of the research showed that land of garlic in Pujon District has Inceptisols and Alfisols. The land characteristics in Pujon district has difference, among others, land elevation are 861–1.213 mdpl, slope of land are 3–36%, soil texture are "loam†to "clay ", soil aggregate are "very-stableâ€, soil pH ranging from very acid to semi acid, soil CEC are "moderate†to "very-highâ€, and the base saturation are "low†to "very-highâ€. The relationship between land characteristics to crop production, proved by correlation between variable such as elevation (r =-0.559), CEC (r =-0.515), base saturation (r = 0.561), % sand fraction (r = 0.541), and % clay fraction (r = -0.675). Other factors affecting garlic production are varieties of garlics and soil tillage, these correlation are not significant.

The expansive soil obtained from Baure in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area was rich in clay mineral (montmorillonite), unstable and difficult to use for construction purposes. The soil treated with up to 12% palm kernel shell ash (PKSA an agro – waste) by weight of dry soil to improve index properties and compaction characteristics of the soil using PKSA. Index tests were carried out to classify the natural soil, while the moisture-density relationships were determined by compaction tests on the natural and treated soils using three energy levels viz, British Standard light (BSL), West African Standard (WAS) and British Standard heavy (BSH). BCS used in the study was classified as A-7-5 (20) using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and CH group in the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Tests results show that specific gravity of the soil increased from 2.29 for the natural to 2.34 at 12% treatment. Liquid limit decreased from 76.2% for natural to 73.4% at 10% PKSA content. Plastic limit increased from 40% for the natural soil to 47.1% at 12% PKSA content treatment. Maximum dry density (MDD) values decreased from 1.44Mg/m3, 1.5Mg/m3 and 1.65Mg/m3 for the natural soil to 1.38Mg/m3 at 10%, 1.45Mg/m3 at 10% and 1.56Mg/m3 at 6% PKSA content for BSL, WAS and BSH compaction energy levels respectively. On the other hand, optimum moisture content (OMC) value decreased from 28.5% and 22.4% for the natural soil to 22.4% and 21.0% at 12% PKSA content for BSL and WAS energies respectively while the value for BSH energy increased from 18.2% to 19.0% at 8% PKSA content. Results show that PKSA is suitable for the improvement of the index properties and compaction characteristics of BCS; and its beneficial use will reduce the attendant disposal problem on the environment.

Vertisols are among the most extensive soil types in the Ethiopian highlands, occurring in a wide range of agro-ecological zones where complex crop–livestock-based farming systems are practiced. Sustainable soil management on vertisols always meets with physical characteristics that are driven by clay mineralogy, swelling, shrinking, and risk of temporary waterlogging. The latter causes substantial spatial variability and turns vertisols into obnoxious study material, when compared to other soil classification orders. In this study, we have explored soil properties across different farming systems using soil profile and analytical data generated by the CASCAPE project; an action research project funded by the Dutch government for capacity building on the scaling up of evidence-based best practices for increased agricultural production in Ethiopia. In addition, the effects of variations in vertisol properties on crop yield and fertilizer response were examined through fertilizer trials in different locations. Teff (Eragrostis teff Zucc.) and wheat (Triticum aestivium), the two cereal crops commonly grown on vertisols, were used as test crops. Five treatments of NPSZnB—nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, zinc and boron containing blend (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 kg/ha)—and two treatments comparing NPS and diammonium phosphate (DAP) with the blend containing Zn and B were included in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that soil quality was generally poor under the highland cereal systems, i.e., sorghum–teff–livestock mixed system (FS1) and wheat–maize–teff–barley–livestock system (FS2) compared to the enset–coffee–cereal–livestock complex system (FS3), which cannot only be attributed to geological history, but also to the way the land use systems have shaped the soils. Abstract. Definition of an earthquake includes parameters with respect to region of interest. Each of those parameters has different weights on the earthquake ground motion and effect. This study examines the weight of common parameters that have an influence on the effects of earthquakes. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used for factor weighting of each parameter and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used for simulating the results of the AHP on a spatial environment. In this study, it is aimed to generate a hierarchical structure of the model for the simulation of an earthquake hazard map (EHM). The parameters of the EHM, which are selected by the criterion of non-correlated factors, are: topography, distance to epicenter, soil classification, liquefaction, and fault/focal mechanism. As a result of the study, weights of the parameters that affect the earthquake ground motion at the study area are determined and compared with a selected attenuation relation map.

This study aims to assess the suitability of the sediments present in Tigris River, Tikrit city, northern Iraq for concrete production and road building purposes. Representative samples were collected from three selected stations at the study area using the channel modeling method. According to the grain size analysis, the sediments were classified as a type of poorly graded gravels (GP) depending on the unified soil classification system. The true specific gravity of the soil ranged between 2.28 and 2.568. The chemical analysis of the study samples revealed that gypsum content ranged between 0.82 and 1.69 %. Total soluble salts ranged 2.45- 3.87%, the organic matter content ranged 0.14- 0.76%, and the pH value was between 7.73 and 7.38%. The results of the Los Angeles Abrasion Test of selected samples showed weight loss ratios for the three stations (1, 2, and 3) of 19.9, 20.7, and 17.2%, respectively, while the maximum dry density values were 2.2739, 2.1940, and 2.2013 gm / cm3, respectively. The values ​​of the Californian Bearing Ratio test (C.B.R) were 53, 65 and 106 %, respectively. After comparing the results with the standard values of ASTM for concrete and roads materials, it was found that the samples were suitable for these purposes.

The main goal of this study is to evaluate Mishrif Reservoir in Abu Amood oil field, southern Iraq, using the available well logs. The sets of logs were acquired for wells AAm-1, AAm-2, AAm-3, AAm-4, and AAm-5. The evaluation included the identification of the reservoir units and the calculation of their petrophysical properties using the Techlog software. Total porosity was calculated using the neutron-density method and the values were corrected from the volume of shale in order to calculate the effective porosity. Computer processed interpretation (CPI) was accomplished for the five wells. The results show that Mishrif Formation in Abu Amood field consists of three reservoir units with various percentages of hydrocarbons that were concentrated in all of the three units, but in different wells. All of the units have high porosity, especially unit two, although it is saturated with water.

Flood disasters cause negative impacts, such as damage to facilities to the onset of fatalities. Reducing the risk of flooding needs to be done to reduce the impact caused by this disaster. Lamongan Regency is one of the regencies in East Java affected by floods every year in most of its areas. This study aims to reduce the risk caused by flooding by using GIS (Geographic Information System). Mitigation is done by determining areas with a high potential risk of being affected by flooding. The study used spatial analysis functions in ArcGIS. Supporting variables used rainfall, land cover, slope, soil texture, and watershed area, and it becomes important in determining flood-prone areas. From the results, the largest soil classification is the Kpl soil type. Litosol Gray Grumosol, The wide distribution of rainfall from 1500-1750 mm has the widest distribution is 66,67 ha. The slope of 0-8% has the widest distribution of 92,257 ha, making Lamongan a very vulnerable high flood area. Laren District is the District with the greatest flood potential, and Irrigated Field is the dominant land cover type affected by the flood. With the flood disaster map generated from this research, local governments can seek prevention in areas with high flood potential. They can carry out socialization based on disaster mitigation, especially for districts with potential flooding.

In this study, an attempt was made to assess the effectiveness of black cotton soil blended with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and bone ash (BA) for soil stabilization. The study was therefore about improvement of the properties of black cotton soil with bone ash admixed with ordinary Portland cement and the determination of the optimum quantity that could be used as road construction material at minimal cost. Bone generated waste from slaughter houses (abattoirs) could be effectively utilized for civil engineering construction works, aiming at minimizing the disposal problems and reducing the environmental hazard. The preliminary investigation on the black cotton soil collected along Gombe-Biu road in Yamaltu (Baure village) Yamaltu Deba Local Government area of Gombe state Nigeria, shows that the soil belongs to A-7-6 (31) in the American Association of State Highway and Transport Officers and CH in the Unified Soil Classification Systems (USCS), respectively. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC)/Bone ash (BA) blend in stepped concentrations of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8% and 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% respectively, by dry weight of soil, were used to treat the soil. Compaction was carried out using three energy levels namely: the British Standard Light, West African Standard and the British Standard Heavy. The liquid limit decreased steadily from 65% for the natural soil to 55.5% at 6% OPC / 6% BA content, while the plasticity index decreased from 28.49% for the natural soil to 16.5% at 6% OPC / 6% BA treatment. Generally, the maximum dry density (MDD) increased while optimum moisture content (OMC) decreased with higher BA treatment. The UCS values of specimens treated with 6% OPC / 6% BA increased from 752, 779 and 827kN/m2 for the natural soil to 1688, 2250 and 2667kN/m2 when cured for 7, 14 and 28 days, respectively. There was an increase in the unsoaked CBR values from 6, 9 and 12% for the natural soil compacted with BSL, WAS and BSH energy levels to 48, 80 and 85% at 6% OPC / 6% BA content. Приведены обоснование и обсуждение предложенных классификаций. ; In this article we propose a classification for the masses of rock and soil, located in the bases of the buildings in permafrost zone. Classifications are made for masses consisting entirely of rock and soil with negative temperature, as well as for masses, including thawed soils and rocks. Updated in 2011 the Russian All-Union State Standard«Soil», which came into force in 2013, includes a classification of frozen soils, which are distinguished in a separate class. This is one of the differences of our inter-state standard, issued by the Eurasian Council for standardization, Metrology and certification, from the international English-language normative document (ISO). It is caused by the fact that on the territory of the European Union there is no permafrost soil, and only soils and rocks are discussed. In contrast, on the territory of Russia permafrost soil is widely distributed, in particular in the areas of extraction of exported raw materials. Permafrost is causing a significant, ongoing difficulties of construction and operation of buildings.The classification of soils in the Russian All-Union State Standard «Soil» and here is based on the type of physical and physico-chemical bonds between the particles in a soil. In frozen soils there are specific unstable bonds, due to the presence of ice. This fact calls for distinguishing the frozen soils into a separate class. In permafrost zone along with frozen soils that include ice, there are waterless soils and rocks with negative temperature. The list of soils in the permafrost zone, would be incomplete without:1) ice-soil (more than 90 % of ice), 2) chilled soil of the temperature below 0 °C, 3) soil with positive temperature. Cooled plastic or loose soils with negative temperatures lie in cryolithozone where there are soluble minerals or saline groundwater. Soils with positive temperature lie everywhere under permafrost at different depths, in summer they also arise over permafrost. In some places they occur in cryolithozone.In the classification of soils we will adhere to the principles set out in the first article of the series. In respect of the classes, we divide soils by the type of the bonds in them. Firstly, we single out frozen soils with the bonds created by ice, and, secondly, conditionally waterless soils with negative temperature, where there is no ice and bonds are physical and physico-chemical. For brevity, the second class of frozen masses is convenient to call the special soil of permafrost zone. At the level of subclasses we specify the classification by the same types of bonds in soils. In each of these two classes we detach subclasses: 1) rock mass, 2) disperse mass and 3) «skadi». Among the frozen soils there are specific fourth subclass — ice soils. The classification in respect of the types is made for masses consisting entirely of soils with negative temperatures, as well as for masses including thawed soils. The author offers justification and discussion of the proposed classifications.

This book focuses on the mechanistic (microscopic) understanding of radionuclide uptake by plants in contaminated soils and potential use of phytoremediation. The key features concern radionuclide toxicity in plants, how the radioactive materials are absorbed by plants, and how the plants cope with the toxic responses. The respective chapters examine soil classification, natural plant selection, speciation of actinides, kinetic modeling, and case studies on cesium uptake after radiation accidents. Radionuclide contaminants pose serious problems for biological systems, due to their chemical toxicity and radiological effects. The processes by which radionuclides can be incorporated into vegetation can either originate from activity interception by external plant surfaces (either directly from the atmosphere or from resuspended material), or through uptake of radionuclides via the root system. Subsequent transfer of toxic elements to the human food chain is a concrete danger. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms and genetic basis of transport into and within plants needs to be understood for two reasons: The effectiveness of radionuclide uptake into crop plants - so-called transfer coefficient - is a prerequisite for the calculation of dose due to the food path. On the other hand, efficient radionuclide transfer into plants can be made use of for decontamination of land - so-called phytoremediation, the direct use of living, green plants for in situ removal of pollutants from the environment or to reduce their concentrations to harmless levels

AbstractThis study aimed to assess the suitability of the potential solid waste landfill sites in seven provinces (Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Gümüşhane, Bayburt and Artvin) in the Eastern Blacksea Region of Türkiye. The earthquake hazard analysis for two major earthquakes which occurred in the region was first carried out. Then, the geophysical methods including seismic refraction tomography (SRT), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) were conducted to find out the structural and physical properties of the subsurface which include the layering, soil classification based on VS30 and the groundwater content at 25 locations of 13 in target provinces. The integrated interpretation of whole data sets demonstrates that Işıktepe, Esence, Çamburnu and Kazantaş which are characterized by VP > 1200 m/s, VS30 ≥ 400 m/s, ρ > 70 Ohm-m, low earthquake hazard and seismicity are more suitable among others. Vezirköprü, Şebinkarahisar, Yenice, Bayburt-Center, Balkaynak and Murgul will be suitable after a geotechnical reclamation due to moderate seismic velocities and electrical resistivity which are 900 < VP ≤ 1200 m/s, 200 < VS30 < 400 m/s and 10 < ρ ≤ 70 Ohm-m representing stiff and wet soils. In addition, Bafra, Ağalık and Ovacık were considered to be unsuitable due to the presence of thick, water-saturated soft soil and extremely weathered rocks. Finally, this study shows that the joint interpretation of seismicity and geophysical data in potential waste landfill sites, extremely important for the planning and development of a city, can provide the valuable information which will enable to prevent possible deformations, environmental problems and economic losses after waste landfill.
