Canon Law in the 12th and 13th centuries has often been associated with the growth of the papal monarchy. Without denying such connection, this paper aims to suggest that it brought about elements that helped to challenge the central place of the pope in Christendom. First, in broad lines, the use of Matthew 16,18 (Tu es Petrus) and the Translation of the Empire by Gratian, Innocent III and Innocent IV, which evolved to support the increasing authority of the pope in temporal affairs, are discussed. Some aspects of this use that could give, and eventually gave, shape to a doctrine on the position of the pope, are then pointed out. ; El derecho canónico de los siglos XII y XIII es generalmente asociado con el alza de la monarquía papal. Abstract. Scaling behaviour in nonstationary time series can be successfully detected using the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Observational time series often do not show a stable and uniform scaling behaviour, given by the presence of a unique clear scaling region. The deviations from uniform power-law scaling, which suggest the presence of changing dynamics in the system under study, can be identified and quantified using an appropriate instability index. In this framework, the scaling behaviour of the 1981–2007 seismicity in Umbria-Marche (central Italy), which is one of the most seismically active areas in Italy, was investigated. Significant deviations from uniform power-law scaling in the seismic temporal fluctuations were revealed mostly linked with the occurrence of rather large earthquakes or seismic clusters.

The extent to which infrastructures being deployed for a postcarbon transition can be considered sustainable has been increasingly scrutinized within the critical turn in energy justice research. However, the focus therein tends to be on how new megaprojects still reveal Global North–Global South colonial relations and energy-related injustices. In this paper, we aim to contribute to widening critical energy justice research by illustrating how it needs to also consider the spatio-temporalities of renewable energy colonialism in the Global North. To that end, we undertake a psychosocial historiography of selected large-scale hydroelectric power plants in Portugal, from the twentieth century to the present day. This historiography is undertaken via archival data and interviews. Our analysis illustrates how hydrocolonialism has been enacted–discursively, infrastructurally, and psychosocially–in rural areas in Portugal, across different socio-political regimes; and also how it can be contested, by identifying some examples of resistance. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

AbstractThis article addresses the relative neglect of Territory and Power in informing the study of general state political development, both as a theoretical approach and in its application to the UK. It locates Territory and Power as a distinct contribution to two major schools of comparative research. The first section argues that Territory and Power provided an approach that was part of the intellectual turn during the 1980s to bring the state back into the analysis of politics. The second part argues that Territory and Power should be seen also as a contribution to the intellectual turn since the 1980s towards temporal analysis of political development. On these bases future researchers may find Territory and Power more accessible as a work that they can incorporate in their own research.

The aim of this work has been, the analysis of the legitimacy of the enterprise powers, according to the theories contractualista – that justifies them in the labor contract - or comunitarista – the one which situates it in the titularity of the organization that has the employer - adopting the first, for being more related with the model of labour relations that characterizes our labour legislation. Besides, we identify the underlying model in the ETT relation of triangular duties, whose structure distributes the enterprise powers, in such a way that the receptor of the service, the user company, gets the power of direction and control of the labour activity, whereas the ETT, the disciplinary power. Incidentally, we detect the regulatory delay of the MITRADEL in this matter, and we elaborate a doctrinal approach because, today, there is no doctrine neither jurisprudence about the model followed in the scarce Panamanian regulation of the ETT, contained in the Labor Code of 1972, article 95, complemented by article 1, of the Agreement 181 of the ILO, concluding our analysis with the predominance of the thesis comunitarista in that contractual modality. ; El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido el análisis de la legitimidad de los poderes empresariales, según la teoría contractualista – aquella que los justifica en el contrato de trabajo - o comunitarista – la que ubica, en la calidad de titular de la organización que ostenta el empresario, su legitimación - adoptando la primera, por ser más cónsona con el modelo de relaciones laborales que caracteriza nuestro ordenamiento laboral. Además, identificamos el modelo subyacente en las ETT, relación de trabajo triangular, cuya estructura distribuye los poderes empresariales de manera tal que a la receptora del servicio, la empresa usuaria (EU), se le atribuye el poder de dirección y control de la actividad laboral, mientras que a la ETT, el poder disciplinario. Adicionalmente, detectamos la mora reglamentaria del MITRADEL en esta materia y elaboramos, por no existir doctrina ni jurisprudencia, una aproximación doctrinal del modelo seguido en la escasa normativa panameña de las ETT, contenida en el Código de Trabajo de 1972, artículo 95, complementada por el artículo 1, del Convenio 181 de la OIT, concluyendo nuestro análisis con el predominio de la tesis comunitarista en esa modalidad contractual.

Automatically estimating a user's socioeconomic profile from their language use in social media can significantly help social science research and various downstream applications ranging from business to politics. The current paper presents the first study where user cognitive structure is used to build a predictive model of income. In particular, we first develop a classifier using a weakly supervised learning framework to automatically time-tag tweets as past, present, or future. We quantify a user's overall temporal orientation based on their distribution of tweets, and use it to build a predictive model of income. Our analysis uncovers a correlation between future temporal orientation and income. Finally, we measure the predictive power of future temporal orientation on income by performing regression.

Civil violence is a complex and often horrific phenomenon whose characteristics have varied by era, setting, and circumstance. Its objective analysis has rarely been feasible at spatial and temporal scales great enough and resolutions fine enough to reveal patterns useful in prevention, intervention, or adjudication. An extraordinary data set simultaneously meeting scale and resolution criteria was collected during conflict in Guatemala from 1977 through 1986. Reported here is its spatial-temporal analysis; reported as well is a putatively novel method for estimating power-law exponents from aggregate data. Analysis showed that the relationship between ethnic mix and killing was smooth yet highly nonlinear, that the temporal texture of killings was rough, and that the distribution of killing-event sizes was dichotomous, with nongenocidal and genocidal conflict periods displaying Zipf and non-Zipf distributions, respectively. These results add statistical support to claims that the Guatemalan military operated under at least two directives with respect to killing and that one of these effected a genocidal campaign against an indigenous people, the Mayans. Implications for group-behavioral modeling, conflict prevention, peace-keeping intervention, human-rights monitoring, and transitional justice are noted.
