Against the backdrop of an increasing interest in visual methods in social research, this paper examines some theoretical foundations of human (inter-)action by reflecting on the interplay between senses, the body, and biography. The main purpose of the paper is to combine an integral, non-Cartesian concept of the self as body (respectively the lived body as self) with biographical research—thus enriching research on the body, as well as on biography. Criticizing the Cartesian split of body and mind, classical phenomenological (Leib) and recent concepts of the body ("embodiment") are sketched, resulting in a processual model of the sensual construction of the lived and living body in its environment. Given the interplay of bodily foundations of the self and processes of biographical structuring, so far, distant fields of research are converged. Some suggestions for conceptual improvements, an attentional shift to body aspects, respective research topics, and the extension of methods exceeding the narrative biographical interview in biographical research are indicated.

Since the explosion of the so-called "refugee crisis" in 2015 and the introduction of increasingly restrictive policies, at both national and international level, aimed at preventing migrants from crossing European borders, the topic of irregular migration over the Mediterranean has gained high visibility in public debate as well as on the international research agenda. While in the past most research in this field was based on analysing official data and institutional records, media coverage and interviews with experts, more recently the use of biographical narratives and life histories – two of the main tools that allow complex spheres, such as those related to emotions, memory and identity, to be explored – has become more widespread. These pieces of research actually provide a unique insight into the phenomenon and thus contrast with official representations and state-oriented accounts, often ideologically biased and more inclined to assess the success or failure of legislative measures or administrative and law-enforcement strategies. The accounts given by refugees, those who escaped from conflict and persecution, and so-called clandestine exiles, however, often recall the memories of those who survived the most notorious massacres of the twentieth century. The violence, humiliation and suffering that migrants increasingly experience on their journeys to Europe not only requires a critical synthesis of the historical and social matrices and asymmetrical power structures that contribute to producing the status of clandestinity and that have created an enormous underwater cemetery in the Mediterranean Sea. They also force social scientists to consider that these complex social phenomena lie within an intricate web of relationships and dynamics that cannot be properly investigated and governed without an adequate understanding of their crucial human dimension. On the one hand, migrants are often construed by the media as pure and naked victims of events, universal objects of sympathy, to be looked at with pietas and sorrow, or simply lives who do not matter, given the generalized state of collective atrophy in European public opinion. And yet, on the other, all this imagery often diverts our attention, preventing it from focusing on their agency, resources and abilities which, on the contrary, often resist and struggle against dominant narratives and, if adequately dealt with, might have crucial implications for a new approach towards the governance of the phenomenon. In this regard, adopting a politics of the voice, aimed not only at providing migrants with the chance to speak for themselves but also at reshaping the conditions of visibility of their narratives and subjectivities within the wider public arena, often struggles with the methodological and ethical implications of our work as social scientists and most likely requires a more critical assessment of the tools generally used in this field.

The articles that make up this volume are related to the multidimensional aspects of the narrative- biographical research. Individual authors, positioning themselves between their source areas of knowledge (pedagogy, psychology, anthropology, sociology and literary studies) and a transdisciplinary auto/biographical research plane, pick up as their starting point the processual perspective of the socio-cultural world, whose central element is the active subject as the creator of his/her own biography. Such assumptions (expressed explicitly and implicitly) have provided the basis for reports on the Authors' own research projects and a framework for ordering the purely theoretical aspects of narrative-biographical studies

The feminist biographical method is an in-depth interpretive methodology that is useful for research in the field of psychology. I believe that this qualitative method is an excellent tool for analyzing individual narratives of participants lives in relation to the larger cultural matrix of the society in which they live. Although an oral interview is often the primary strategy employed for data collection in this methodology, other sources of information such as personal journals, official documents, and cultural texts are also exciting additions to the research. The strengths of the feminist biographical method include the depth, context, and meaning found in the research; the inclusion of women's experiences and voices in academic research; and the ability to conduct a sociopolitical analysis of potentially marginalized people. In this article, I delve into the feminist biographical method by providing discussion and examples from research in the field, as well as from my own research. I provide the reader with a personal narrative on how-to conduct research using the feminist biographical method. In particular, I delineate the process of researching the lived experiences of women international students in difficult relationships. As a psychological researcher, I encourage others in the field of psychology to consider using the feminist biographical research to add context, depth, and richness to studies involving human participants.

With its diachronic focus on socio-historical processes and life and family histories, sociological biographical research can analyse the emergence of new spatial figurations. It does so from the perspective of the experiences of individuals in their changing belonging to different groupings at different times. In this article, I investigate changing (meanings of) spaces in the Bilad ash-Sham region (roughly today's Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and parts of Jordan and Syria). I discuss how the process of the formation of nation-state borders and citizenship in the twentieth century transformed translocal relations into transnational networks, combined spatial diffusion with (forced) emplacement in nation-states, and initiated accelerating national closure processes. At the family level, the growing relevance of citizenship and borders in the region came about with knowledge of, and family dialogue about, border crossing, and the increasing spatial diffusion of the family, as well as intrafamilial discussions on the "value" of different nation-states. These processes affected all families in the Bilad ash-Sham region to a varying extent. They constitute a type of figuration of space that influenced the gradual formation of societies within the framework of nation-states defined by colonial rulers. As an example, I will discuss the regional family history of a Syrian refugee in Amman, Jordan.

(ICE2)
