How does the press represent immigrants? The leading scholarship in framing studies argues that immigrants are mostly represented negatively in the national press, which aligns with the dominant discourse. But does that negativity exist in the local newspapers too? Focusing on the immigration debate surrounding Brexit, the following study was set out to examine ten local newspapers from the most populous city regions in the UK during three snapshot time points from November 2018 to April 2019. The six-week period, which was mainly based on Brexit milestones, served as data collection points. The evidence suggests that local press coverage largely portrays immigrants in a favourable manner, proving support and highlighting their need and contribution. The said positivity was closely followed by the threat frame which depicts sentiments of fear, panic, burden and hostility. However, a shift in the positive discourse, towards threat, was noted during the mid-time point that was mainly fueled by the elite rhetoric. Among the findings, the Scottish open arms policy towards the immigrants is very significant. It is mainly linked to their local concerns, such as labour shortages and population decline. While the study contributes to the growing literature in local media research, it also highlights how domestic needs could push back on the dominant discourse.
We study the impact of the first American party committed to redistribution from rich to poor on anti-Black media content in the 1890s. The Populist Party sought support among poor farmers, regardless of race, providing the segregationist Democratic establishment in the South with an incentive to fan racial outrage to alienate white voters from the Populists. Using text data from local newspapers and a difference-in-differences strategy, we find that stories of sexual assaults by Black men on white women became more prevalent in counties where the Populists threatened the Democratic dominance, and in Democratic newspapers only.

The Spanish American War had a profound influence on United States' foreign policy throughout the twentieth century. Stearns County. a Midwestern German community in central Minnesota, expressed their reaction to this national occurrence through their local newspapers. Like other communities distant from major media centers, Steams County newspapers responded slowly to the growing prewar issues in 1898, determining their relevance for the local population The Democratic St Cloud Times, the German Catholic Der Nordstern, and the Republican St. Cloud Journal-Press were the most influential newspapers in the region. Each St. Cloud newspaper took a differerent position on the war and its potential political consequences. This study will prove how these newspapers. with their respective party affiliations. brought Spanish American War issues to the local population by illustrating a variety of interpretations as they followed the Stearns County volunteers during their eighteen months of service.

Public schools operate within a local context where institutional actors facilitate or constrain policy decisions. The authors focus on the role of the local newspapers. In this study of news reporting on educational issues in Chicago, they apply two analytical perspectives—namely, the pluralist bargaining model and the unitary actor model. They created a database of news reports on the city's educational matters by two major Chicago newspapers for a 20-month period. Analysis suggests a strong unitary tendency in news reporting by the city's two major newspapers, as they are situated in the midst of mayor-led reform in schools.

For more than a century, local journalism has been taken almost for granted. But the twenty-first century has brought major challenges. The newspaper industry that has historically provided most local coverage is in decline and it is not yet clear whether digital media will sustain new forms of local journalism. This book provides an international overview of the challenges facing changing forms of local journalism today. It identifies the central role that diminished newspapers still play in local media ecosystems, analyses relations between local journalists and politicians, government officials, community activists and ordinary citizens, and examines the uneven rise of new forms of digital local journalism. Together, the chapters present a multi-faceted portrait of the precarious present and uncertain future of local journalism in the Western world.
