Aunque el libro postula un homenaje al trabajo de Josefina Ludmer El género gauchesco. Un tratado sobre la patria (1988), también recala en otros momentos en que la literatura argentina (e incluso la uruguaya, lo que reconoce el carácter rioplatense de la gauchesca) encara el conjunto. La noción misma de género resulta redefinida y, en consecuencia, desestabilizada, al tiempo que se la combina con otras miradas sobre la figura histórica del gaucho, en las que campea la de Sarmiento, homologado a Hernández en su papel común de custodios de la tradición, y la de Borges.

This article analyses the proportions of personal to real estate wealth for a group of 295 businessmen profiled in the Dictionary of business biography. It shows that businessmen who owned land on a large scale in the late nineteenth century were a comparatively small group who retained a small proportion of their total wealth in landed assets. Low levels of social mobility are identified as a function of land purchase, and new insights are given into the relationship between wealth, status, and land ownership. Any integration of business and landed wealth in this period was not a consequence of businessmen becoming landowners.

The lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic studies of the Shiranish Formation in the Diana area, Erbil, Northern Iraq, were conducted to distinguish the main lithostratigraphic units, depositional environment and the formation age. The Shiranish Formation in the study area can be divided into three rock units. The lower and upper units consist of marly limestone, marl and limestone deposited in the outer shelf environment, while the middle unit is dominated by laminated calcareous shale and marl deposited in the upper bathyal environment. Calcareous nannofossils showed the presence of about 20 species/genera in the studied Shiranish Formation. Three biozones are identified; Misceomarginatus pleniporus biozone; Ceratolithoides aculeus biozone, and Uniplanarius sissinghii biozone. From a regional perspective, these biozones were compared with other nannobiozones, leading to the conclusion that the studied section is of Middle Campanian age.

AbstractPersonal social networks profoundly influence a wide range of outcomes throughout the life course. But little research has considered how some features of individuals' social networks may be shaped by experiences in early life. This study uses nationally representative data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project to examine how childhood circumstances may shape the structure of older adults' personal social networks. The analyses show that higher childhood socioeconomic status is associated with larger network size and a more expansive, less kin-based network structure. At the same time, higher levels of family happiness in childhood are associated with greater network density and more kin-centric network composition, which may reflect greater access to social support and overall network intimacy across the life course. The results suggest that studies of the relative advantages of social network structure may benefit from contextualizing individuals' social networks in terms of their social origins. The article discusses the need for additional research on the life-course bases of the link between childhood circumstances and later-life network properties, and what role this connection plays in shaping later-life well-being.

Published with the permission of Cambridge Scholars Publishing. ; Basagain is an Iron Age fortified site located on the north-eastern side of the Basque Country (Spain). As is common in other Iron Age sites of the region, evidence has been found of the coexistence and complementarity of two types of pottery production, which can be differentiated by their ownmodes of production and use, even though both were made with the same basic raw materials but with different preparation processes. This contribution presents the results derived from an archaeometric study carried out to determine the clay sediments and the tempers probably used in the making of mainly hand-made pottery from Basagain. A representative set of raw materials from the surroundings of the Basagain site was prepared in the laboratory, with the aim of comparing them with the archaeological material. The same characterization techniques used with archaeological items were applied: petrographic analysis by thin section and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The resulting data suggest that the clays used by Basagain potters were quite similar to clay sediments sampled in this study, as the main characteristics of these clay sediments are shared with archaeological ceramic potsherds previously analysed. ; The authors are grateful for the financial support given by the Heritage Program of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa (Spain) to J. Abstract
This paper discusses the importance of foreign language learning as a means of maintaining healthy cognitive, psychological and social functioning in elderly people. It argues that a complex cognitive activity involving multiple skills and stimulating extensive neural networks can greatly contribute to contrast the inception of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and other types of dementia. Because of age-related physical and mental limitations, and because old learners find it hard to abandon tried-and-tested methodologies and attitudes, it is, however, crucial that teachers and educators try to meet the older adult's needs by customising teaching procedures and learning environment to their requirements and expectations. Rather than introducing a great amount of new information and learning techniques, it may be much more fruitful to encourage the older adult to retrieve and rely on previously acquired knowledge and consolidated learning strategies. The adoption of computer-assisted language learning, however, may be helpful and motivating for older learners, provided technological demands are kept to a minimum.

In research on computer data bases, work and electronic location monitoring, telephone identification systems and drug testing1 I encountered comments such as: "turn the technology loose and let the benefits flow"; "do away with the human interface"; "only the computer sees it"; "that has never happened"; "there is no law against this"; "the technology is neutral". These are all examples of what can be termed information age techno‐fallacies. They are part of the cultural undergirding of routine data collection practices and an optimistic, techno‐surveillance worldview that is strongest in, but is hardly restricted to, the United States. They reflect a broader celebratory ethos of technology and commerce. To understand technologies for collecting personal information, we must understand the ideational environment in which they are nourished and in which they flourish. Before a surveillance technology is adopted, it is important to examine the broader cultural climate, the rationales for action and the accompanying empirical and value assumptions.

Examines casino-type gambling & financial speculation as two aspects of contemporary capitalism that are tied to globalization & defined as capitalism in the age of electronics. It is contended that understanding the dynamics of speculation is essential for understanding the nature of globalization. The inherent link between risk & economic activity is discussed, along with insurance, hedging, & speculation as examples of trading in risk; differences between speculation in the general sense & speculation in financial markets; & the increasing need for mechanisms to manage risk as the degree of uncertainty in the world economy rises. Key features of speculation are identified & assessed in terms of their impact on the economy. Other issues discussed include the dependence of modern-day speculation on computers; the degree of volatility in today's financial markets; hedging & speculative strategies adopted by financiers; ways in which speculative capital connects & universalizes world financial markets; & the polarization of wealth & poverty that results from capitalism under the rule of speculative capital. 36 References. PurposeThis study aims to show how the increasingly popular life course paradigm (LCP) can be employed as an alternative to the successful aging perspective (SAP) as an overarching conceptual research framework to study elderly consumers' financial well-being.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample of 804 Thai consumers over the age of 45 selected via the snowball method.FindingsSignificant results were found for hypotheses derived from the LCP for older consumers' financial well-being, suggesting critical roles of early life experiences, developmental factors, adaptation mechanisms and contextual factors.Originality/valueThis paper shows how efforts to study consumers over the course of their lives can be improved by utilizing the principles and theoretical perspectives of the LCP and offers research directions for studying not only older consumer well-being but also numerous consumer behavior issues at any stage of life in an innovative way.
