L'article porte sur la contribution de Philippe Garigue à l'étude du Canada français et veut redonner à ce penseur négligé en sciences sociales la place qui lui revient dans l'héritage intellectuel du Québec. Après avoir présenté la carrière du chercheur et ses principaux travaux sur le Canada français, l'article s'attarde à ses critiques méthodologiques et théoriques pour mieux faire apparaître les aspects plus novateurs de sa pensée. Il resitue la démarche de Garigue dans les débats épistémologiques et historiographiques sur la représentation du Canada français d'avant les années 1960 et propose une perspective critique de l'ensemble de son oeuvre au regard des analyses plus récentes. Au-delà du caractère polémique maintes fois attesté de ses travaux, l'article soutient que Garigue procède à une remise en question inédite, pour l'époque, de la représentation du Canada français d'avant les années 1960 comme une société d'Ancien Régime rurale et cause des difficultés des Canadiens français à s'émanciper. Par contre, d'autres aspects de son oeuvre ont moins bien vieilli, dont ses réflexions sur le nationalisme.

The labour-intensive manufacturing industry faces many working-life challenges in the rural, sparsely populated northern areas of Finland at both operational and strategic levels. These challenges vary, being in interaction with both technical and social systems and their combinations. In this paper, the authors review and evaluate needs, actions and results carried out to improve work and productivity in three regional industrial development cases. The actions discussed in this paper, such as work environment management, change management in general and the sociotechnical approach, are essential for the success of enterprises. Using the results of this research as a basis for developing design knowledge, two guidelines for strategic management purposes are proposed. These guidelines implement sociotechnical aspects into the work environment and its management, and recognise that it is important to focus on human and organisational factors in addition to technical end environmental aspects. A proposal for a specific, unique self-assessment tool for evaluating the level of the quality of the work environment in SMEs is also suggested.

The Mediterranean basin holds the greatest area of horticultural crops grown under plastic in the world. Spain houses almost 50,000 ha of greenhouses and is one of the largest suppliers of European Union markets. Soilless cropping systems constitute all efficient production practice used in greenhouses and lessen the limitations arising from the ban of methyl bromide. Soilless cultivation is associated with the use of expensive technology, which makes farmers consider such adoption carefully. The aim of this work is to statistically identify the factors that significantly influence the timing of adopting soilless cultivation by using duration analysis. The study focuses on Mediterranean greenhouses, specifically horticultural producers in the southeast of Spain. The results suggest that certain individual characteristics as well as aspects of a social nature exert a favorable influence by reducing the delay in adopting soilless cultivation. Furthermore, technical complexity, commercial aspects related to price, and the repercussion of policies regulating methyl bromide use are also discussed in this work.

À la suite des critiques formulées par des femmes de couleur et par des lesbiennes quant à la conception ethnocentrique blanche et hétérosexiste d'une bonne partie de la réflexion féministe, l'auteure essaie de penser la catégorie « femmes » en dehors des définitions essentialisantes et totalisantes. Elle propose, à cette fin, de recourir à la notion sartrienne de structure sérielle pour penser les femmes comme un groupe social dont les membres n'ont pas nécessairement à partager les mêmes attributs. Cela lui permet d'envisager la possibilité d'un féminisme qui ne repose pas sur la catégorie « femmes » dans son ensemble, mais qui émerge plutôt des pratiques, nécessairement parcellaires, de femmes qui transforment en enjeux politiques certains aspects de la « condition féminine ». Ainsi, il devient possible de penser le féminisme comme théorie et pratique politiques sans le faire procéder de « femmes » dont la condition serait identique en tous points, mais plutôt de coalitions qui remettent en cause un aspect particulier des rapports de pouvoir entre hommes et femmes.

Argues that the expiration of the Partnership & Cooperation Agreement (PCA) demands that Russia & the European Union (EU) must decide whether to transform years of cooperation into a strategic partnership. Political, economic, social, & cultural domains covered by the PCA are reviewed, along with relevant aspects of the EU Collective Strategy, & the 1999 Strategy of the Relationships between the Russian Federation & the EU. Attention is given to similarities in the Russia & EU approach to mutual relations; the EU's unwillingness to offer Russia an adequate plan of strategic mutual relations; & areas of disagreement between Russia & the EU. It is pointed out that the EU consistently sacrifices continental security for its own & exploits old fears of a restored Russian Empire. Other matters discussed include economic aspects of EU-Russia relation; the lack of cooperation in the defense/security sphere; & contradictory relations between the EU & the US. Victims of abuse of power, including victims of crimes, are unconventional. Viewed from the paradigm of victimization, the victims of abuse of power includes politzcal.

In December 2005 the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted a new strategy for Africa (the Strategy) proposed by the Commission in October 2005. In the document, the EU discusses many aspects relating to its ties with African countries. Past cooperation is reviewed and ongoing programs are assessed. What distinguishes the Strategy from previous EU policy statements on Africa is that the Union makes allusion a number of new elements. They include economic initiatives, political innovations, a new social blueprint, geographic coherence, strategic aspects and more money. While the elements are reminiscent of a forward-looking approach to future EU-Africa relations, certain challenges may need to be surmounted. The challenges mainly refer to the potential negative effects of policy incoherence. However, if implemented with a sense of purpose by both sides, the issues regarding policy incoherence could be appropriately addressed by specific mechanisms discussed in the Strategy. Such mechanisms include the Euro-African Business Forum and EU-African Human Rights Forum.

Understanding discursive shifts over the twentieth century in relation to family roles, paid work and care is essential to any critical review of contemporary family theory and policies. This paper charts aspects of these shifts. An analysis of case records of the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSSPCC), 1945 to 1960 is presented. Based upon these data we reflect upon the construction of the working-class family in the West of Scotland and draw upon one case study to illustrate issues further. This post-war period was one of rapid social and technological change. It is commonly perceived as a period of segregated gender roles, and in the UK a predominant male-breadwinner family model. The RSSPCC case records suggest that family lives and forms, particularly for those on low incomes, were diverse throughout this period. Although prosecutions for cruelty and neglect are dominant in perceptions of the society, most of its work was in material assistance, advice and surveillance. This latter aspect is considered in this paper.

This first installment of an Atlas of Chiefdoms and Early States assembles data on six clusters of elementary hierarchical polities, coded here to measure the scale of both the political-administrative aspects and the social-economic aspects of these case studies. These six clusters - the Hawaiian archipelago, Madagascar, the interlacustrine region of East Africa, the central Cameroons, southeastern Nigeria, and southern Mesopotamia - are documented with ethnographic, historical, and archaeological evidence, for which key references are provided. This initial step toward a compendium is intended to be cumulative. It will be revised and expanded in future installments, along with revisions of the Excel data file that is provided for download, and the editor's edition Spss file with labeled and corrected codings. These data are released into the public domain but because they are constantly up-dated please communicate with the author before using them. Updates of the data may be available from the author before a new installment appears.

PurposeTo develop a decision model supporting employee involvement in industrial vulnerability reduction.Design/methodology/approachA synthesis review of some of the relevant extant literature on technological/industrial vulnerability, and their application within a normative decision‐making model (i.e. the "Vroom‐Yetton model").FindingsThe insights on vulnerability drawn from the literature are highly amenable to a systematic decision‐making model for employee involvement. Various aspects of vulnerability, specifically with regard to substantial, social and temporal dimensions may be included in such a model.Research limitations/implicationsNew insights about the context‐dependent aspects of vulnerability are offered by considering these within a contingency decision model. This suggests that vulnerability categories are not absolute, but have to be assessed in relation to a specific decision‐making framework.Practical implicationsThe developed model provides a way of weighting various dimensions of vulnerability and making more appropriate decisions regarding leadership style in a range of circumstances.Originality/valueWhile decision models exist for assessing risk in organizations, no contingency model for employee involvement in vulnerability assessment has been presented to date.

The paper employs additional sources that help to recreate the historical context of the speech and to inscribe it into its authentic Sitz im Leben. Furthermore, Lysias' speech against Alcibiades is linked with Phaedrus' speech and the whole context of the Symposium.
