Since 2003, Urban policy has set up urban renovation programs in the neighbourhoodsexperiencing the greatest difficulties. These programs articulate urban, social, economicand environmental aspects in order to develop the neighbourhoods and reduce social inequality. Many public equipments are involved in renewal operation, including educationalestablishments. Thus, some municipalities take school issues into account when they establishrenewal operation. The objective is to demonstrate how school issues are integratedin renewal operation. Projects of seven municipalities are developed for this purpose.

Youth live storied lives (made up of intersecting stories of school, home, peers, and other aspects of lived experience). Therefore, the ways in which youth construct and tell their high school stories are vital for understanding their experiences as first authors (primary creators, constructors, and tellers of their own stories) and protagonists (as active agents of these stories). This paper examines the physical and metaphorical movements that a research team experienced when constructing and sharing their high school narratives related to youth engagement in social justice educational change. Team members went from engaging restricted movements (which we, authors, have called collapse, truncation, or formulaic motions) to expanded motions (designated relationality improv, malleable formations, and the languages of the arts). This transformation reflected members becoming first authors of and meaningful protagonists in their high school stories of social justice and democratic educational change. For educators and researchers striving to support youth voice and engagement in educational change, an emphasis on movement (within youths' story construction and telling processes) affords valuable openings to support youth in identifying and claiming their agency, engagement and change-making in high school.

The impact of environmental damage on human rights - civil political or welfare and labour rights - is becoming ever-more widely appreciated and has direct bearing on the behaviour of companies and their norms of conduct. In this volume contributors draw on the tools and insights of a range of disciplines including law anthropology economics geography and social science to analyze the issues and show how new standards that protect rights and liberties can be established.

AbstractThis paper presents the results of a research on the representations of femicide in the judicial field, in Italy. The use of the term femicide is analysed through the lens of the normative process, examining its social meanings and questioning its political and economic anchoring using the "juridical field" model (Bourdieu 1986). The essay is based on a wide theoretical framework. It starts by highlighting the problems evoked by the term 'femicide' (Corradi, et al. 2016; Radford and Russell 1992); its declension in criminal law and jurisprudence through its coding in specific types of offence (Merli 2015). The topics of power and imbalance between the sexes (Goffman 1977) are analysed by presenting their juridical definitions and those found in penal codes (Casanova 2016; Cavina 2011; Feci and Schettini 2017). This perspective helps framing considerations about the results of the empirical research based on quantitative data taken from 93 verdicts of 'femicide' sentences which involved foreign or migrant victims (chosen from a corpus of 370 issued in Italy between 2010 and 2016) and qualitative aspects: gathered through expert interviews and the tales of violence against women in a verdicts' judgemental sample of murders of foreign women. The study confirms the way in which narrations produced in the "judicial field" – despite the "distortions" affecting them (Dubé 2012; Gusfield 1968) – prove to be rich sources for the knowledge of a phenomenon which, still today, suffers from a structural lack of data.

Plastics to Energy: Fuel, Chemicals, and Sustainability Implications covers important trends in the science and technology of polymer recovery, such as the thermo-chemical treatment of plastics, the impact of environmental degradation on mechanical recycling, incineration and thermal unit design, and new options in biodegradable plastics. The book also introduces product development opportunities from waste materials and discusses the main processes and pathways of the conversion of polymeric materials to energy, fuel and chemicals. A particular focus is placed on industrial case studies and academic reviews, providing a practical emphasis that enables plastics practitioners involved in end-of-life aspects to employ these processes. Final sections examine lifecycle and cost analysis of different plastic waste management processes, exploring the potential of various techniques in modelling, optimization and simulation of waste management options

AbstractOver the long term, the Mongol conquest of the Southern Song in 1276 was less destructive to members of the local South Chinese elite than was the failure of the Yuan regime to establish strong and durable institutions of dynastic rule. For not long after the elite survivors of the Sino-Mongol wars had returned to a comfortable prosperity under Yuan rule, their children were buffetted by the instability and civil wars that engulfed Yuan society from the late 1330s to the collapse of the dynasty in 1368. The Kongs of Liyang typify many of the most salient features of elite life in South China under the compressed Yuan dynastic cycle: the orphaned son of a minor Song official who immediately capitulated to the Mongols, by the 1320s Kong Wensheng had translated talent, pedigree, and his position as a respected clerk in provincial government into such accoutrements of elite Yuan life as a library, sojourning literati guests, and a steady flow of slaves and bondservants thrown onto the market by penury and natural disaster. The prosperity built up by men like Kong Wensheng unravelled in the last tumultuous decades of the Yuan, an era of chaos that is captured by Wensheng's son Kong Qi in his Frank Recollections of the Zhizheng Era of ca. 1365. Even as it exemplifies many aspects of the compressed Yuan dynastic cycle, this collection of cautionary anecdotes and observations is also colored by Kong Qi's special circumstances as a minor son and a uxorilocal husband, circumstances that incline Kong Qi to blame the perils of his family, his society, and ultimately his dynasty on women's usurpation of male-centered institutions of public authority to create their own private gynarchies. Kong's jeremiads against usurpatious women in turn raise the possibility that during the Yuan, if not at all times, women exercised far more power and autonomy than normative prescriptions would suggest.

Problems of comparative, cross-cultural res are examined in the context of the comparability of systems of stratification based on caste (as in India) with systems based on race & color (as in the US South). Caste systems may be described as systems of cumulative equality. Advantages of status tend to be combined with advantages of wealth & power, & those who are soc'ly underprivileged also tend to be at the bottom of the econ & pol'al scale. There are many exceptions to this in the colorcaste system where poor whites co-exist with well-to-do Negroes. In both systems the component units maintain their soc Identity through strict rules of endogamy, but there are diff's between the 2 systems re values of equality/inequality, in the structure & composition of the groups of which they are formed, & re the degree of conflict they produce. When a community is divided into Negroes & whites, the conflict is likely to be sharp; where it is divided into 20 or 30 groups, no particular conflict is likely to absorb the energies of the community as a whole. Some characteristics of the Indian caste system are defined, eg, the distinction between caste & subcaste, biological or physical diff's between castes (anthrop'ts are divided on this), clustering of groups according to their soc proximity, & possible caste linkages based on soc & physical distance. A close similarity is found between caste in India & ethnic groups in the US re the part they play in the pol'al process. Ethnic solidarities in the US, & caste in India are widely used for mobilizing pol'al support & are taken into account in formulating electoral strategies. Finally, linguistic diff's between Indian castes are discussed. It is concluded that soc groups in a society may differ by physical &/or cultural aspects. There is no general theory which makes it possible to delineate in exact terms the relationship between cultural diff's & their org into mutually antagonistic groups. M. Maxfield.

The history of managerial training since 1917 is outlined. management training has been one of the main concerns of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic since it seized power in 1917. The particular features of the Soviet regime, under which great importance is attached to the collective principle in the manag of state affairs & the nat'l economy, are described. The gov, by decree of Sep 17, 1920, ordered that workers' faculties should be set up at all higher educ'al establishments to prepare workers & peasants for studies. A 3-yr day course program to train skilled workers, engineers & technicians & a 4-yr evening course program were set up. Instruction was free & grants, accommodation, books, etc, were made available. Help received from the USSR in the form of an influx of experienced engineers & technicians & in reconstruction aid has contributed to the success of industr'ization in Byelorussia. Now, as a rule, all managerial staff in industry & building undergoes specialized training & has higher educ. The complexity of the training required has resulted in a whole system of pre-service & in-service training & retraining. This system is discussed in detail. In 1965, the econ administration of the USSR was reorganized to develop worker initiative at all levels, improve management & planning, stimulate production & speed up sci'fic & technical progress. New regulations for socialist enterprises were introduced & a gradual transition to new forms of manag is expected. About 1,000 members of managerial staffs are now taking postgraduate correspondence courses at instit's of higher learning, without interrupting their regular work activities. 2 current urgent problems are noted: the training of econ'ts & the training in econ's of student engineers & other specialists. To give a modern manager a through all-round training requires the cooperation of sociol'ts, econ'ts, org experts, jurists, psychol'ts, mathematicians & engineers. All these aspects are reflected in the Byelorussian gov's current program for the training & retraining of managerial personnel. The latest developments & plans for the future are delineated briefly. M. Maxfield.

In a comment on articles by Cori Dauber, Michael Desch, & Peter Feaver (all, 1998) in a special journal issue, it is suggested that lack of extant research on civilian-military relations may account for their weaknesses. Desch's assertion that the military was completely subordinate to civilian authority during the Cold War era is contradicted by history, as is Dauber's claim that disputes between the military & civilian authorities in that era were hidden & few. Feaver's argument that, concomitant with increasing civil-military tension, civilian monitoring of the military has increased in the post-Cold War era also is flawed. Further, they do not discuss normative aspects of the civil-military relationship. It is concluded that the prospects for increased study of US civil-military relations are remote. J. Ferrari

Based on the German case, this open access book highlights the increasing flows of migration and the internationalisation of individual life courses. It analyses the experiences of migration across four central domains - employment and income, partners and families, health and wellbeing, as well as friends and social participation - which potentially have far-reaching consequences for social inequalities and life chances. The book showcases results from an innovative probability sample that is representative of German emigrants who recently moved abroad and remigrants who recently returned from abroad and compares their international experiences with the sedentary population in Germany. Stays abroad, whether temporary or permanently, have become the new normal for increasing numbers of people from highly developed welfare states. Unnoticed from mainstream migration studies, these countries are today not only major immigration countries but also important sources of international mobility. By providing an empirically founded prism of the global lives of German migrants, this book is a valuable resource for students and researchers of migration, social inequality, and the life course and provides practitioners with insights into these regularly overlooked aspects of international migration.
