Ouvrage issu de la collaboration entre deux équipes universitaires associées, l'une de l'université de Bologne, l'autre de l'université Sorbonne nouvelle. Il fait partie des trois publications issues, après sélection des communications et sélection des textes (re-travaillés pour la publication), d'un colloque international et transdisciplinaire organisé par les deux équipes à la Villa Finaly (Florence, Italie) : la première ayant fait l'objet du numéro 15 de la revue "Mediazioni" en ligne (2013, université de Bologne), la troisième d'un ouvrage collectif "Interpréter l'événement. Aspects linguistiques, discursifs et sociétaux (Limoges, Lambert-Lucas, novembre 2014). ; International audience ; "Les sens de l'événement" sont une réflexion sur le sens du mot événement et en particulier dans les discours qui font partie des corpus de travail de différentes sciences humaines et sociales. Il explique ainsi les raisons de cette rencontre, autour d'une réflexion croisée sur le sens du mot 'événement', de différentes aires culturelles autour de la notion d'événement, objet porteur de sens différents et, de ce fait, transversal à différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales (histoire, sociologie sciences du langage, sciences de la communication, sciences politiques…), ici représentées. Si, comme le dit le dictionnaire d'usage, l'événement est "ce qui arrive", c'est également "ce qu'il devient" au fil du temps, c'est-à-dire comment on le raconte, le nomme, le qualifie, le mémorise, et comment il se transforme lorsqu'il est saisi "par la langue et la communication et qu'il devient ainsi objet de discours. Car si 'événement, c'est "ce qui est important pour l'homme", dire l'événement, c'est aussi s'interroger sur ce qu'il représente, au-delà de l'expérience individuelle et du ressenti émotionnel. Dire l'événement, c'est finalement contribuer à le construire et à le représenter et à s'interroger sur ses référents. D'où cette réflexion collective et introductive sur "les sens de l'événement" autour de cinq thèmes ...

Exchange is a pervasive concept in everyday life, affecting phenomena as diverse as interpersonal relationships and market transactions. In addition, economists have used the concept in a highly specific and clearly delineated way. Against this background, Expanding the Economic Concept of Exchange sets out to expand the concept of exchange by crossing the boundaries laid down by economists and by examining the function played by deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions. The main motivation for expanding the concept of exchange was the realization that in the prototypical economic model deception is not taken into account. Hence, economists traditionally regard deception as some sort of irrationality, as a flaw in an otherwise perfectly rational process. Authors represented in this volume take a different approach examining deception as a constituent quality of exchange. This is shown by the contributions drawing on recent developments in economic theory, by those with an anthropological orientation, as well as by a contribution referring specifically to Adam Smith. An interrogation into deception is long overdue in economics. This volume prepares the ground for and makes the first contributions to explicitly acknowledging deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions as fundamental dimensions allowing us as economists to further research and develop the concept of change. A particular and perhaps unexpected focus of this volume lies on anthropology, because economics can clearly benefit from integrating selected results on deception from outside its expanding domain. It is primarily targeted at economists interested in institutional aspects of exchanges and social theory. Key Findings 1. Looming challenges characterize the HKH as environmental, sociocultural, and economic changes are dynamically impacting livelihoods, environmental conditions, and ultimately sustainability. Many challenges for sustainability are related to weak governance, natural resource overexploitation, environmental degradation, certain aspects of unregulated or rapid urbanization, and loss of traditional culture. Addressing these problems will require policy and action at local, national, and international levels, including common action among HKH states. 2. However, for mountain societies of the HKH, some changes may also bring novel opportunities for sustainable development. A range of opportunities lie in improved connectivity including transportation and communication, which increases access to information, partnerships, and markets. Enhanced access to social services may be enabled and strengthened by economic growth and the advancement of science and technology. Additionally, a growing network of local urban centres may support the transmission of new prosperity to rural populations, as the development of mountain towns and cities often can help — besides their mere economic power — to enhance the political influence of these regions within the national states. 3. The drivers of change to environmental, socio-cultural, and economic sustainability in the HKH are interactive, inextricably linked, and increasingly influenced by regional and global developments. Among the most important drivers in this intricate network of causes and effects are demographic changes and current governance systems, as well as land use and land cover change, over-exploitation of natural resources, economic growth and differentiation, and climate change.

Globalizing Race explores how intersections between French antisemitism and imperialism shaped the development of European racial thought. Ranging from the African misadventures of the antisemitic Marquis de Morès to the Parisian novels and newspapers of late nineteenth-century professional antisemites, Dorian Bell argues that France's colonial expansion helped antisemitism take its modern, racializing form--and that, conversely, antisemitism influenced the elaboration of the imperial project itself. Globalizing Race radiates from France to place authors like Guy de Maupassant and Émile Zola into sustained relation with thinkers from across the ideological spectrum, including Hannah Arendt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Frantz Fanon, Karl Marx, Max Horkheimer, and Theodor Adorno. Engaging with what has been called the "spatial turn" in social theory, the book offers new tools for thinking about how racisms interact across space and time. Among these is what Bell calls racial scalarity. Race, Bell argues, did not just become globalized when European racism and antisemitism accompanied imperial penetration into the farthest reaches of the world. Rather, race became most thoroughly global as a method for constructing and negotiating the different scales (national, global, etc.) necessary for the development of imperial capitalism. As France, Europe, and the world confront a rising tide of Islamophobia, Globalizing Race also brings into fascinating focus how present-day French responses to Muslim antisemitism hark back to older, problematic modes of representing the European colonial periphery.--

"The volume consists of 10 chapters. Chapter 1 frames the rest of the book by providing an overview of the complex issues that influence the needs of bilingual children, particularly in a country such as the United States. Chapters 2 through 4 discuss cross-language transfer--that is, how the structure of one's native language may (or may not) affect second language acquisition, as well as the biological bases of normative and aberrant language development. These are critical points because a bilingual child's second language acquisition process is informed by prior language learning and neuropsychological processes, all of which can be affected by environmental factors. Beginning with Chapter 5 and continuing through Chapter 10, specific types of assessment are addressed. This section includes chapters addressing the use of norm-referenced measures in bilingual assessment, the use of response to intervention techniques, and social-emotional evaluation in a bilingual-bicultural context. Assessment of acculturation factors is discussed as well. Chapters 9 and 10 review data specific to key areas of learning that may be affected by second language acquisition processes: reading and writing. "This text provides a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary entry level account of the challenges, the response, and the alternative pathways to tackling development in a changing climate. The first section provides the building blocks for understanding and framing the climate-development nexus. It will include an overview of the science, drivers and impacts of climate change, and present the different disciplinary perspectives. The second section presents and assesses responses to the development challenges posed by a changing climate at different spatial scales. This section will address international, regional, national, sub-national and non-governmental responses to climate change. It will also include an overview of the main instruments and competing approaches for addressing climate change as a development concern, including market-based measures, regulatory instruments, and voluntary agreements. The final section will be forward looking and solutions-oriented. It will set out different critiques of 'development-as-usual' and competing visions of development in a warming and carbon-constrained world. This book uses sociological perspectives to bring together work on war and identity in the Middle Ages relating to a range of peoples and geographical settings from Europe, the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Asia. Focusing on the interrelation between ideological practices and group formation, it examines the role of warfare in the emergence and decline of particular social structures, and changing patterns of collective identification. It contributes to the debate on the longue durée development of the phenomena of ethnicity and nationhood by drawing attention to the impact of war on the evolution of various types of polity and visions of community in the Middle Ages. Its use of non-European as well as European exemplars provides a wealth of fruitful comparative material, shedding new light on the relationship between medieval warfare and high-level identities

The Amazon is the subject and object of multiple and varied debates that range from its biological and cultural diversity, through its role in counteracting the greenhouse effect, to its economic potential and the sustainability of its natural resources. Undoubtedly, the discussion is here to stay and has to be enriched with knowledge that is true and pertinent to its reality(s). It is in this spirit that the Center for Labor and Agrarian Development Studies (CEDLA) and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), with the support of the Swedish Embassy in Bolivia, promoted the research contest "Capitalist mercantile expansion and the Amazon as a new resource frontier in the 21st century". The idea that we are mutually dependent on the recognition of our peers is at least as old as modernity. Across Europe, this idea has been understood in different ways from the very beginning, according to each country's different cultural and political conditions. This stimulating study explores the complex history and multiple associations of the idea of 'Recognition' in Britain, France and Germany. Demonstrating the role of 'recognition' in the production of important political ideas, Axel Honneth explores how our dependence on the recognition of others is sometimes viewed as the source of all modern, egalitarian morality, sometimes as a means for fostering socially beneficial behavior, and sometimes as a threat to 'true' individuality. By exploring this fundamental concept in our modern political and social self-understanding, Honneth thus offers an alternative view of the philosophical discourse of modernity.
