In Acts of Care, Sara Ritchey recovers women's healthcare work by identifying previously overlooked tools of care: healing prayers, birthing indulgences, medical blessings, liturgical images, and penitential practices. Ritchey demonstrates that women in premodern Europe were both deeply engaged with and highly knowledgeable about health, the body, and therapeutic practices, but their critical role in medieval healthcare has been obscured because scholars have erroneously regarded the evidence of their activities as religious rather than medical. The sources for identifying the scope of medieval women's health knowledge and healthcare practice, Ritchey argues, are not found in academic medical treatises. Rather, she follows fragile traces detectable in liturgy, miracles, poetry, hagiographic narratives, meditations, sacred objects, and the daily behaviors that constituted the world, as well as in testaments and land transactions from hospitals and leprosaria established and staffed by beguines and Cistercian nuns. Through its surprising use of alternate sources, Acts of Care reconstructs the vital caregiving practices of religious women in the southern Low Countries, reconnecting women's therapeutic authority into the everyday world of late medieval healthcare. AbstractThis paper investigates the copper money system of the Late Mamluk period (1468-1517) using numismatic and textual evidence from Cairo. Numismatic evidence is associated with contemporary chronicle reports of recoinages and devaluations of the copper currency, which serves to explain how the various issues of copper money (fulūs) were issued and how they related to each other. This investigation provides evidence for the dating of one undated coin type, explains the function of the variety of types in the copper coinage, and establishes the basis for determining the monetary policy of the period and the public responses to that policy. Cet article est consacré au système monétaire de cuivre de l'époque mamelouke tardive (1468-1517), étudié à travers des sources numismatiques et des textes du Caire. La documentation numismatique est ainsi mise en relation avec des chroniques contemporaines faisant état des refrappes et des dévaluations de la monnaie de cuivre, ce qui permet d'expliquer dans quelles conditions il a été procédé aux diverses émissions de monnaie de cuivre (fulūs) et comment celles-ci sont liées les unes aux autres. Cette étude permet de dater un type monétaire non daté, explique la fonction de la variété des types au sein du monnayage de cuivre et établit les fondements servant à déterminer la politique monétaire de la période étudiée et les réactions du public à cette politique.

"Affective Betrayal" traces the presence of emotion in journalistic and fictional writings published during the early 1900's, and examines how it exposes the fragility and fragmentation of Chinese modernity. The dissertation begins with a simple observation: after the 1895 Sino-Japanese War, Chinese intellectuals circulated modern political concepts in a highly provocative fashion. Charged with lyrical intensity and calculated to provoke, their affective presentations contradict the assumption that Chinese modernity began life as a constructed "discourse" derived from cross-cultural exchanges and consolidated by power relations. To explicate how the lyrical intensity disrupted the semantic consistency of these translated concepts, the dissertation studies the formation of a "text" as the production of an aesthetic "object." In my detailed formal analyses, I show that the leading late Qing intellectual Liang Qichao (1873-1929) circulated his writings as aural texts and pictorial texts, and that translated modern concepts were received as reading as well as listening and visualizing experiences. Focusing on epistemic uncertainties created by Liang's competing affective presentations, I argue that Chinese modernity often teeters in a state of aesthetic ambivalence. It is displaced from the modern political discourse. By revealing the uncertainty and confusion that are deep-seated in China's modernization process, the dissertation seeks to explain why the import of modern concepts had led to China's continued political impasse, rather than rationality and progress, after the 1911 revolution.

The developed Spatial Grasp Technology, SGT, capable of satisfying these demands will be briefed. Directly operating with physical, virtual, and executive spaces, as well as their combinations, SGT uses high-level holistic mission scenarios that self-navigate and cover the whole systems in a super-virus mode. This brings top operations, data, decision logic, and overall command and control to the distributed resources at run time, providing flexibility, ubiquity, and capability of self-recovery in solving complex problems, especially those requiring quick reaction on unpredictable situations. Exemplary scenarios of tasking and managing robotic collectives at different conceptual levels in a special language will be presented. The controversy over the location of the seat of government, which had flared up frequently in Washington Territory during the period 1855-1875, was comparatively dormant in the following decade. With the coming of the railroads, the discovery of gold in the Fraser River country and Idaho, the use of irrigation in central Washington, the growth of the sheep and cattle business, the increase in commerce on the Columbia and Snake rivers, the development of the lumber and fishing industries west of the Cascade Range, the population of all sections of the territory rapidly increased, and Washington Territory was soon to be ready for statehood. In 1878 its citizens had sought entry into the Union, but it had been refused. Ten years later, with rapid expansion in full swing, the talk of statehood was once more revived. At the same time there developed the feeling that it was now time to locate the capital in a new place, which should reflect the internal growth and expansion of Washington. [Courtesy of JSTOR. While the layered 122 iron arsenide superconductors are highly anisotropic, unconventional, and exhibit several forms of electronic orders that coexist or compete with superconductivity in different regions of their phase diagrams, we find in the absence of iron in the structure that the superconducting characteristics of the end member BaPd2As2 are surprisingly conventional. Here we report on complementary measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity measurements, Andreev spectroscopy, and synchrotron high pressure x-ray diffraction measurements supplemented with theoretical calculations for BaPd2As2. Its superconducting properties are completely isotropic as demonstrated by the critical fields, which do not depend on the direction of the applied field. Under the application of high pressure, Tc is linearly suppressed, which is the typical behavior of classical phonon-mediated superconductors with some additional effect of a pressure-induced decrease in the electronic density of states and the electron-phonon coupling parameters. Structural changes in the layered BaPd2As2 have been studied by means of angle-dispersive diffraction in a diamond-anvil cell. At 12 GPa and 24.2 GPa we observed pressure induced lattice distortions manifesting as the discontinuity and, hence discontinuity in the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. This article explores projects which Andrea Levy worked on in her final years but which did not come to light during her lifetime. Drawing extensively on material found in Levy's personal archive, it considers the form, scope, aims, and qualities of these works. It also reflects on some links between them, as well as how they relate to her published oeuvre. In particular, it highlights the politically-engaged nature of much of Levy's late unpublished work. The first part of the article explores material from Levy's archive relating to a possible sixth novel. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the project in which Levy came to be most invested during her final years: a documentary mini-series on the historical relationship between Britain and the Caribbean. In collaboration with others, Levy developed and pitched this series, ultimately unsuccessfully, to the BBC. As well as Levy's intentions for and development of the project itself, her subsequent reflections on its rejection are also discussed. The article then discusses a screenplay that Levy wrote based on Mary Seacole's autobiography. In re-telling Seacole's story, Levy's screenplay deftly explores the ways in which that story came to be overshadowed. The last section of the article explores projects that Levy contemplated in the final years of her life but did not significantly develop. It also discusses the short piece "Two", which was found in Levy's archive after her death.
