While urban life can be characterized by endeavors to settle stable and safe environments, for many people, urban space is rarely stable or safe; it is uncertain, troubled, imbued with challenges and perpetually under pressure. As the concept of unsettled appears to define the contemporary urban experience, this multidisciplinary book investigates the conflicts and possibilities of settling and unsettling through open and speculative analysis. The analytical prism of unsettled renders urban space an indeterminate ground unfolding through routines, temporalities and contestations in constant tension between settling and unsettling. Such contrasting experiences are contingent on how urban societies confront, undergo and overcome turbulence and difficulties in time and space. Contributions drawing on theoretical reflections and empirical accounts-from Argentina, Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the UAE, the UK, the USA and Vietnam-give insights into plural occurrences of the unsettled, which might tie down or unleash transformative, liberatory and emancipatory potentials. "This collection of essays surveys the practices, behaviors, and beliefs that developed during slavery in the Western Hemisphere, and the lingering psychological consequences that continue to impact the descendants of enslaved Africans today. The psychological legacies of slavery highlighted in this volume were found independently in Brazil, the U.S., Belize, Jamaica, Colombia, Haiti, and Martinique. They are color prejudice, self and community disdain, denial of trauma, black-on-black violence, survival crime, child beating, underlying African spirituality, and use of music and dance as community psychotherapy. The effects on descendants of slave owners include a belief in white supremacy, dehumanization of self and others, gun violence, and more. Essays also offer solutions for dealing with this vast psychological legacy. Knowledge of the continuing effects of slavery has been used in psychotherapy, family, and group counseling of African slave descendants. Progress in resolving these legacies has been made as well using psychohistory, forensic psychiatry, family social histories, and community mental health. This knowledge is crucial to eventual reconciliation and resolution of the continuing legacies of slavery and the slave trade."--

This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. El artículo realiza un análisis de los trabajos disponibles sobre la sociología de la familia en España. Un conjunto de circunstancias existentes a finales del siglo XIX hacían presagiar el rápido desarrollo de esta especialidad. Sin embargo, no llegó a formalizar como disciplina pese a los esfuerzos de Adolfo Posada, iniciador de la misma, y a los factores propicios a su desarrollo: el debate sobre el papel de la mujer en la sociedad, la Encuesta del Ateneo de Madrid de 1901 o el impacto de los profundos cambios legales implantados por la Segunda República. El nacimiento de la sociología empírica, a finales de los años sesenta, se encuentra muy vinculado al estudio de la familia española, pero serán otras las ramas de la sociología las que más se desarrollen. Con la muerte de Franco, en 1975, y los cambios legislativos y sociales que se desencadenan, la sociología de la familia adquiere mayor vigor, aunque son muchas las lagunas que quedan por investigar, varias de ellas enumeradas en el trabajo.

The negative aspects of economic growth as a policy objective and target for future development has historically been suppressed by a general belief in its superiority. Degrowth confronts the core logic of growth and pinpoints where it is failing as a system. The academic field of degrowth is relatively young but is attracting more attention and has its own research network. With the aim of identifying characteristic elements and strategies, a literature review were performed. Degrowth can be described as a frame or an umbrella keyword that connects different types of actors, initiatives, goals, strategies,and policies. It derives from multiple academic fields stretching from bioeconomics to justice and its main goal is a future guided by ecological sustainability and well-being for all. It is defined by what it is against such as the capitalistic system, GDP and development, but also by what it advocates such as equality, democracy, localization, and sufficiency. Strategies involve sharing in different forms, economic instruments such as taxation of harmful activities, restriction of advertisement and strengthening of the commons. Degrowth envisions an altogether different society consistent of new institutions that is guided by alternative values such as altruism, respect, sufficiency, and solidarity.

International audience ; Si l'histoire ne peut se concevoir sans la prise en compte des différents événements, crises de cherté, famines et épidémies qui marquaient, voire qui rythmaient la vie des hommes de l'époque médiévale et moderne, force est de constater que cet aspect des choses est resté, pour le Maghreb médiéval, quasiment inexploré, au même titre que son histoire démographique. Mon attention fut attirée par une assertion de Bernard Rosenberger concernant le Maroc des XVI e-XVIII e siècles : « En cas de disette », écrit-il, « le Makhzen ne semble avoir au-delà du cercle de ses membres, de ses soutiens les plus directs et les plus intéressés, qu'une action symbolique ». Plus récemment, Nicolas Michel énonçait le problème dans les termes suivants : « Les sujets [marocains] ne songeaient que vaguement à imputer au souverain la responsabilité de leur misère 3 ». Qu'en était-il alors à l'époque almohade (XII e-XIII e siècle) ? S'intéresser à la question revient à essayer de voir si l'État intégra, ou n'intégra pas, les crises de subsistances dans ses dispositifs de pouvoir. De même, on peut se demander si la population considérait les autorités politiques responsables des malheurs qui, de manière plus ou moins cyclique, l'accablait.

Analyzes 263 protest events reported in the national newspaper Dagens Nyheter, 1988-1997, to examine environmental protest in Sweden. Explanations for the significant shift in the level of reported protest events, 1988/89 & 1990/91, are offered, eg, fall of the USSR & the election cycle. Three aspects of the shifting issue cycle are then identified: certain issues (eg, animal rights) grew in importance, while others declined (eg, nuclear energy) & developmental issues (eg, roads, traffic, & infrastructure) remained stable. Attention turns to the form & organization of environmental protest, finding most activism to be conventional & demonstrative & of a small scale; violence was almost exclusively the purview of animal rights protests. A significant change in the character of organizations involved in protest events is discerned. Greenpeace is the most confrontational actor, most mobilizations occurred at the subnational level. Findings point to the continuity of the Swedish environmental political landscape & reveal the heterogeneity of the actors involved. Despite institutionalization, a new wave of activism, including militant direct action linked to animal rights, has emerged. Also, local project making in connection to Agenda 21 has appeared as a new form of entrepreneurial environmental action that is not easily reflected in protest events. 6 Tables, 4 Figures. J. The Nordic countries are renowned for their unique administrative register data that include various aspects of an individual's labour market activities. However, studies of government-led help packages and their effects during the coronavirus crisis in Denmark reveal that the labour market statistics used by government and academics have several blind spots when it comes to some of the most vulnerable groups in the labour market. There are strong signs that we underestimate the scope and depth of atypical work and even lack reliable data. We argue in this piece that the coronavirus crisis is an important lesson for labour market sociology that calls for methodological development.

Identifying relevant actors using information gleaned from multiple networks is a key goal within the context of human aspects of military operations. The application of a voting theory methodology for determining nodes of critical importance—in ranked order of importance—for a node-aligned multiplex network is demonstrated. Both statistical and qualitative analyses on the differences of ranking outcomes under this methodology is provided. As a corollary, a multilayer network reduction algorithm is investigated within the context of the proposed ranking methodology. The application of the methodology detailed in this thesis will allow meaningful rankings of relevant actors to be produced on a multiplex network.

An article, published in the English original this April, at the time of the global peak of the coronavirus pandemic, takes stock of the challenges that COVID-19 has brought to society and in particular to sociologists. Draws attention to the process of de-globalisation, which has temporarily affected social sciences, and supports a more global sociology. According to the author, this does not mean limiting it to macro-analysis and methodological globalism. Stresses, on the contrary, the importance of empirical and analytical knowledge from different regions. It then commented on four major themes that social sciences have so far reflected the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, highlighting also important policy aspects. Poukazuje na proces deglobalizace, který dočasně zasáhl i sociální vědy, a pléduje pro globálnější sociologii. Podle autora to neznamená omezování se na makroanalýzy a metodologický globalismus. Naopak zdůrazňuje význam empirických a analytických poznatků z různých regionů. Následně komentuje čtyři významné tematické okruhy, jimiž sociální vědy zatím reflektovaly dopady koronavirové pandemie, a zdůrazňuje při tom i významné politické aspekty. Vyslovuje mj. obavu, že by pandemie mohla posílit autoritářské tendence využívající biopolitiku založenou na nových technologiích a umělé inteligenci.

Situating external engagement within the broader context of developments in Western higher education (HE) and technologies that are changing many aspects of academic life, this research note draws on the experiences of a large number of China scholars to assess the merits of Twitter for individual academics and the field as whole. Celebrating its tenth anniversary in March 2016, Twitter has shaken off its earlier image of celebrity stalking and inane ephemera and has become a tool used by many professionals working on China. Despite initial scepticism, many academics have recognized the utility of Twitter for various professional activities, including networking, increasing research visibility, gathering and disseminating information, and building a public profile. As external engagement activities become a routine expectation for academics in many Western universities, social media like Twitter have drawn attention as potentially useful tools. However, there are numerous obstacles to effective use, which this note addresses. (China Q/GIGA)

The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users--both individuals and firms--often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all. The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products--most notably in the free and open-source software movement--but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses--the custom semiconductor industry is one example--that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R & D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. Decorrido mais de meio século desde a publicação de A redução sociológica, de Alberto Guerreiro Ramos, o livro continua sendo um marco das ciências sociais, principalmente da sociologia no Brasil. Entretanto, cabe ainda lançar alguma luz sobre o contexto social e o contexto intelectual no qual a obra foi produzida, bem como sua recepção crítica naquele momento. Também, restam ainda alguns aspectos a serem analisados a partir da perspectiva atual, ou seja, um balanço e revisão da importância desta obra na cultura brasileira, do que já acusa a ação do tempo e do que permanece atual e mesmo do ainda não foi devidamente analisado.
