The election of a British National Party councillor in London in September 1993 was greeted by shock and disbelief in the media, particularly because it happened during controversial preparations to celebrate the anniversary of Britain's role in Hitler's defeat in 1945. This essay sets out to examine some of the ways in which the BNP victory was reported in an attempt to understand how intricately gender and class are interwoven in discourses of racism in contemporary British politics. First, it draws attention to the dramatic images of white, working-class (or rather, non-working-class), violent, masculinity that dominated media representation of the event. In particular, the apparent invisibility of women in the photos and headlines seemed questionable, particularly when their anger and frustration about their own living conditions percolated through the lengthier written reports on the inside pages. Looking beyond superficial media coverage of the election, it was clear that gender was also a significant factor in the construction of a local, exclusively white, organic community fostered by political parties responsible for administering social housing and other public resources. While gender can articulate different forms of racism, the reverse can also be true. Ideas about what it means to be white, for example, defined against the racialized 'other', are also implicated in the social construction of gender. The violence perpetrated by those attracted to the xenophobic rhetoric of groups like the BNP is able to represent an aspect of masculinity that is both patriarchal and active in defending the 'racial' community. The third voice of beleaguered mothers summons up a version of white femininity that is passively concerned with the task of trying to reproduce the racial purity longed for by their menfolk. Finally, the specific characteristics and dynamics of the area in which the election took place also demands attention, not just because it happened in the heart of one of the most contested territories in London, but also because it was a reminder that the spatial aspects of social conflict are inseparable from the social, political and economic.

In contemporary society with a rapid high-rise development, a growing number of tangible and intangible heritages are suffered from serious threats of destruction with changes in social, environmental and economic conditions. Despite heritage conservation and tourism development have been controversial issues in recent years; it seems that heritage conservation and sustainable tourism are always losing in economic or new developments. In this study, it aims to explore the relationship between heritage conservation and sustainable tourism, and identify local needs and aspirations on regenerating the area through data collection, and suggest three factors which shall be concerned and are effective to guide the future planning process of heritage conservation how to promote culturally sustainable tourism. There are two assets of heritage, tangible and intangible assets, both are significant for conservation, meanwhile, sustainability reflects to social, economic and environmental elements. That is to say, social and cultural issues are both importance of heritage conservation and sustainable development. However, social and intangible aspects, such as customs, lifestyle, culture, arts, are rarely concerned through heritage conservation as a part of urban regeneration in Guangzhou. Through theoretical investment and overseas experiences, this study suggests promoting culturally sustainable tourism. The recommendation emphasizes advocating sustainable tourism in a holistic view. Taking as a case study, En Ning Lu is an urban regeneration project which combine concept of the heritage conservation and urban regeneration, meanwhile, it has great potential to retain and promote local and Lingnan culture by enhancing sustainable tourism. Therefore, it emphasizes that the significance of the incorporation between heritage conservation, urban regeneration and sustainability, and through the three factors, namely politic, management of cultural landscapes and compatibility between new development and old town, to provide a workable suggestion for sustainable tourism, particularly in terms of cultural aspect. The proposed formulation for developing En Ning Lu serves as a sample for other urban regeneration projects in Guangzhou. The purpose of this paper is to sketch briefly some aspects of Bourassa's political and social thought and to indicate in particular a few of the influences shaping his complex mentality. With the historical detail of his public career, and of the Nationalist movement which he led in the first two decades of this century, the paper is not directly concerned. Nor is any attempt made to reach a final estimate of his influence or significance in Canadian politics.The difficulties in examining Bourassa's ideas are many and arise not only from his radical temperament and tendency to over-statement. They spring also from his great sensitivity to the intellectual and emotional currents of his day which found expression in innumerable pamphlets, speeches, and editorials in his newspaper of ideas and combat, Le Devoir, founded in 1910. Difficulties are implicit in the complicated nature of the task he sought to perform. For he set out, at the turn of the century, and with a sense of the opening of a new era in the historic development of the French-Canadian people, to re-examine every aspect of his people's situation; political, social, economic, moral, religious, and intellectual. He proposed to expound principles basic to their social thought and action in a new set of circumstances.Three main elements in the new era were of special concern. First was the impact upon Canada of the new imperialism, opening up prospects of direct involvement in imperial wars in an age of mounting imperial rivalries, and threatening, moreover, so he believed, to undermine toleration of cultural and ethnic difference in Canada. A second major change in circumstance was the rapid development after 1900 of the Canadian West on the basis of a large immigrant population of diverse peoples, posing grave difficulties to the achievement of the ideal of a dual nationality throughout Canada. Finally, he became much concerned with the deeper significance to French-Canadian nationality of the whole complex of adaptations—ideological, moral, economic, and social—being made in response to the coming of North American urban industrialism to the province of Quebec.

The years between 2006 and 2015, during which Evo Morales became Bolivia's first indigenous president, have been described as a time of democratic and cultural revolution, world renewal (Pachakuti), reconstituted neoliberalism, or simply "the process of change." In A Revolution in Fragments Mark Goodale unpacks these various analytical and ideological frameworks to reveal the fragmentary and contested nature of Bolivia's radical experiments in pluralism, ethnic politics, and socioeconomic planning. Privileging the voices of social movement leaders, students, indigenous intellectuals, women's rights activists, and many others, Goodale uses contemporary Bolivia as an ideal case study with which to theorize the role that political agency, identity, and economic equality play within movements for justice and structural change.

Europe's population is ageing and decreasing. Demographic change is making not only regional and territorial adaptation necessary, but also new region-specific spatial planning and regional development. This publication focusses on demographic change and its implications for the economy and social systems in the Alpine areas, which differ widely from their surrounding metropolitan areas. It provides a specific regional in-depth study in order to help establish suitable adaptation and development programs. It covers various aspects including demographic analysis, onsite participatory strategies and implementation processes, as well as generalized adaptation strategies. Reports on pilot actions in various regions across the Alps demonstrate how demographic change can be approached from a practitioner's perspective. RESUMEN: Este estudio pretende analizar y evaluar libros de texto destinados a la etapa educativa de Educación Primaria, concretamente en el área de Ciencias Sociales, pero en su adaptación al programa bilingüe, por tanto, se tratan materiales destinados a la asignatura de Social Sciences. El objetivo es el de analizar y comparar la evolución de estos materiales, tanto en términos de aplicación dentro del aula como su adaptación al enfoque AICLE, la metodología más relevante en lo que educación bilingüe se refiere. Por este motivo, es necesario contextualizar tanto el marco legislativo relativo a los programas bilingües como los principios metodológicos de AICLE. Con la investigación que aquí se presenta se pretende sentar las bases para mejorar este tipo de materiales, poniendo el énfasis en aquellos aspectos fundamentales para el aprendizaje integrado de contenidos y lengua que en ocasiones los libros de textos no tienen en cuenta. ; ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyse and evaluate textbooks intended for the Primary Education stage, specifically in the area of Ciencias Sociales, but in their adaptation to the bilingual programme, therefore, it deals with materials intended for the subject of Social Sciences. In the context of the recent global financial crisis – the most severe crisis since the Great De-pression – Greece has been heavily affected in almost all aspects of the economic, social, political and in-stitutional spheres. The implemented draconian austerity measures under the bailout mechanisms have led to devastating effects on the lives of citizens that have triggered a plethora of collective initiatives. The main rationale of the Special Issue is to capture the various facets of socio-political responses that have emerged from the aftermath of the Greek financial crisis. The Special Issue relies on original data produced in the context of two EU-funded projects, namely LIVEWHAT and TransSOL, and includes six papers apply-ing qualitative and quantitative methods, providing a rich set of fresh and systematic data on understand-ing the collective efforts of Greek citizens during recessionary times.

In light of the ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia, explored here are the children born of rape in terms of genocide, their marginalization, & the inadequate human rights consideration they were afforded because of their link with the perpetrators (fathers) rather than the victims (mothers). The paper goes on to consider the current plight of the war-rape children (most of whom have been left in orphanages) & concludes that current international law is incapable of addressing children's rights in general. International law has proven severely deficient for these children because the concept of genocide, in this particular case, is extremely complicated. The paper concludes that forced impregnation & forced maternity should not be defined as genocidal. This definition fails to consider the children as victims. An unflinching investigation of the false promises of land sparing, exposing how its illusory successes mask the failures of green capitalism For two decades, the concept of land sparing, the claim that agricultural intensification can spare land by preventing forest clearing for agricultural expansion, has dominated tropical forest conservation. Land sparing policies transform landscapes and livelihoods with the promise of reconciling agricultural development with environmental conservation. But that land sparing promise is false. Based on six years of research on agrarian frontiers in Indonesia, Brazil, and Bolivia, this book traces where and how land sparing becomes policy and charts the social and ecological effects of these political contests.
